Converting dng
hello
i have a question that (hopefully) is not about bugs or problems. if i open a dng file that is 9.5 mb and then save it again as another dng without editing or resizing the image at all, the size of the saved image is 27 mb. is this normal behavior that this file is three times the size of the original?
thanks a lot

You'll have to ask tech support about this. I'm not sure anyone here will know the answer.

You can also get there through the program's Help menu. Choose the command Provide Feedback.

I normally do it from within PR - Help | Provide Feedback...
which takes you to a webpage - https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Where are you getting the DNG file from? There are basically two types of DNG files, one is a container for original RAW data and one is the result of the initial RAW processing.
Digital sensor pixels only record the details of one colour, Red, Green or Blue, and normally 12 or 14 bits of information per pixel. So RAW data is a representation of this mosaic of patches of Red, Green or Blue.
First stage of RAW processing is to demosaic this information for an individual pixel by combining the actual value of this pixel by information from a number of surrounding pixels to estimate a full colour value made up of combined Red, Green and Blue components, and normally uses 16 bits of information for each of these colours.
If you export an image from PhotoRAW that started as a RAW DNG but now includes PhotoRAWs demosaicing of the image then each pixel representation has gone up from 12-14 bits of information to 3*16 bits of information. It is this change that increases the file size.
I assume that even if no changes have been made to an image the PhotoRAW will carry out the basic demosaicing if exporting as a DNG. If you want to make a copy of the file then you could try exporting using Original as the file type.

hi david,
thank you for this information. now i understand a little bit what is going on. The photo was taken with a Panasonic FZ8 and then processed with the adobe DNG converter.
Now you write me that I should try to save the file with "Original" as file type. Unfortunately, I do not really know how to do that, when I want to save there are only these file types available, JPEG, Photoshop, TIFF, PNG and DNG.
Maybe you can offer me some help? Thanks a lot
By the way, maybe someone is wondering why I want to save a DNG as DNG, in PR 2023 I have the same problem as reported here. Now I have noticed that if I open the DNG in PR 2022 (16.5.1.12625) and then save it as DNG I can open it afterwards in PR 2023 and the colors are normal again. The only problem is that this DNG is then three times larger.

I have just closed my system down for the night so I can’t check but Export has Original as an option, though perhaps only for RAW?
From what you say it looks as though 2022 now processes your DNG’s correctly but old bug back in 2023. If so the you will need to accept the larger file size since that is the only way to get correctly processed colours into 2023. If you could send original DNG from 2022 to 2023 then it is very likely that the result would be the same as opening the original DNG in 2023 since that is where the basic RAW conversion will be done, and it looks as though that is the problem.
