On1 taking a beating

I am new to On1 just getting on 2022.5 about a month ago, and now 2023.  I agree this rollout could have been smoother, particularly with the Nvidia driver issues.  I previously only worked in Photoshop (haven't used LR) and used On1 recently to process a couple hundred pictures from Italy.

For me, the experience between the two programs couldn't be more different.  In PS I quickly become mired in layer upon layer of corrections and ever-expanding file sizes.  With PR I feel like I can experiment with filters, gradients, vignettes and masks and easily keep track of what's been done.

So yes, they are taking their lumps and have responded rather quickly to not only try to fix the driver issues but also put back the Quick Mask AI tool, so I'm willing to look past the problems and look forward to seeing them develop 2023 further.  Oh, and yes, I will be dropping my PS subscription.

I agree with Steve. I've had continuing problem with PR since I started using 2019. 2019 was unusable for me due it hanging my computer up doing literally nothing, and I got a refund. With 2021 and 2022 I had constant video corruption in small areas of the GUI. This was always blamed on AMDs drivers, but it mysteriously disappeared when 2022.5 shipped.

The company over-promises and under-delivers on a consistent basis.  2023 has been a mess for so many users. Many users have expressed frustration over the apparent bait and switch of the flawless pre-release demos vs. what the the new tools actually deliver.

Yeah, they're a small company.  But if they can't get their act together, they may end up getting even smaller. I love that PR is available with a perpetual license, and everything is one tool - those are the 2 main reasons that I left Adobe.  But constantly fighting with buggy software and a support/development/management structure that doesn't communicate with end users is no way to grow a company.

When management focuses more on product ship dates than product quality, that tells it's customers a lot about what their true priorities are. I've been a software developer for 40 years for a variety of companies, and I've seen both the good and the bad from the inside of these companies.

On1 really needs to start reading these boards and listening to their users.  If they can't keep their customers happy, they won't be their customers for long.

As a new to ON1 user who purchased Photo Raw 2023 based on pre-release announcements ... and videos on Youtube ... this has been a frustrating experience.

I find that the new AI features do not live up to the hype.

Consequently I have resorted to using the older and seemingly more mature features but requiring more input such as detailed masking.  The Super Select is too fuzzy for my work.  Likewise Mask AI.

Other than that I have had issues with edits disappearing, masks adding or deleting selections at will, square artifacts appearing after merging layers, slow response to commands or mouse movements, filters (ratings and labels) disappearing completely ... twice.

A more stable platform would be beneficial.

    Thanks,

Nicolas, what are you system specs?  I'm running on a Win 11 desktop w/ Nvidia 1060 gpu, 32 gig memory and have not had any of the lost edits you are having.  Seems some folks are having success with 'reset settings' when weirdness happens, though I haven't had to use it yet.

Best of luck sorting it out.

    Hello Keith;

I am running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, CPU Intel i7-7820 with 32 GB Ram and Nvidia Quadro M1200 4 GB Ram.

I have twice used the "Delete Settings File" to clear problems with the disappearing filters for ratings and labels.

The filters are once again working normally.

Frankly the most annoying issues are the small points I mentioned:

"Other than that I have had issues with edits disappearing, masks adding or deleting selections at will, square artifacts appearing after merging layers, slow response to commands or mouse movements, filters (ratings and labels) disappearing completely ... twice."

The RAW editing actually does produce nice results.  I have done some comparative processing, going back to previous work.  Comparing with my previous processing I feel the results are superior.

It is just the niggardly little details which I find frustrating.

    Nicolas
