Still confused about .xmp, .on1 and embedded
Good evening,
Despite using On1 Photo Raw since some years now, and have read the user guide and posts on this forum, it is still not clear to me how the sidecar files work.
Here is my situation
Preferences: Save ON1 sidecar files checked. There is no option about xmp files.
My photos and videos all have keywords.
Edited RAW photos and videos all have both .ON1 and .xmp sidecar files.
Jpeg photos some have .ON1 file, none have .xmp file.
My questions are:
1) Since all my JPEG photos have keywords but none have .xmp sidecar file, I assume that the keywords are automatically embedded in the photo. If so, why do we have the option in the Photo menu to embed the metadata?
2) Why some JPEG have .ON1 sidecar files and others no? Is the .on1 file created only if the photo is edited?
3) Why RAW photos and videos have both .on1 and .xmp files? Was it not enough to have only the .xmp? Perhaps for RAW photos the .on1 is used to store the editing and the .xmp is used to store the metadata (keywords, location et.)?
I would be grateful if someone could clarify.

The .on1 is a backup to the database that holds your Edits. Until you export your photo, the edits you made have to be kept somewhere, so they are first stored in a database and backed up by .on1 sidecars. Sidecars are also useful when moving photos between PC's to keep your edits with the photo. If you have it enabled in Preferences, every edited photo will have a .on1 unless it has a .onphoto instead.
.xmp is only created if needed. From page 42 in the user guide...

Thank you Rick for your reply.
Yes I know that page and the sentence that confused me is "When you edit an image... the metadata is embedded into the file automatically". For me, edit means to do some Edits, while metadata means to add keywords etc. Furthermore, in that page they do not mention at all the on1 sidecars.
To me, that part should be something like this: "When you edit an image... your edits are saved in an .on1 sidecar file, whatever the format of the photo. The metadata (keywords, location etc.) is embedded into the file automatically, with the exception of RAW files whose metadata are saved in an .xmp file".
Aside from the comments about the user guide, let's see if I understand correctly
JPEG: Metadata like keywords, if created, are embedded into the photo; edits are saved in .on1 sidecar file. There is no .xml file for Jpeg and similar formats.
Videos and RAW photos: Metadata like keywords etc, if created, are stored in an .xml file; edits are saved in .on1 sidecar
Correct?

When you make changes to the metadata you are still editing the image. You are editing its metadata.
The metadata edits are also saved in the .on1 sidecar files. You can see this if you open one in a text editor.

Got it.
Thank you Brian.

I'm also confused ...
Are keywords metadata? Are they embedded automatically in JPG files?
I did a check: copied to another folder some jpg files with keywords (not manually embedded), without on1 sidecar files: no keywords visible. I have to manually embed them...
Other jpg files with keywords manually embedded and no sidecar files, have their keywords

Yes, keywords are metadata. Any data that describes the photo (pixel) data is metadata.
Here's what the User Guide has to say on page 42.
Embedding metadata
Metadata you add in Browse is stored in industry-standard XMP sidecar files for raw files. This facilitates the transfer of metadata to any application that supports XMP. When you edit an image, create a copy of an image for editing or use the ‘Send to’ command, the metadata is embedded into the file automatically (with the exception of raw files). You can manually embed your metadata into images using the Embed Metadata command from the Photos menu. This will open each image you have selected, update the metadata and re-save it. This is supported for TIF, PSD, PSB and JPG files; raw and PNG files do not support direct embedding of metadata.

... the metadata is embedded into the file automatically (with the exception of raw files)..., but keywords are NOT embedded automatically in jpg files, right? I did a check (read above).
Any explanation? thank you

I do not have an explanation. You'll have to ask tech support.
