On1 Photo Raw 2023 saves as 16 Bit tiff no matter what :-(
AnsweredGood day,
I am a bit confused and can't find a fix: Im sending 8 Bit Tiffs from Lightroom to Photo RAW 2023, edit them and save. From that point on they become 16 Bit, layered TIFF ( one layer) even if the prefs are set to 8 Bit Tiffs. Opening the original TIFFS in PS shows that they are actually 8 bit. I trashed the prefs of Photo RAW 2023 but no luck. What am I missing here? I want 8 bit Tiffs cause the size of 16 bit files is enormous.
Thank you.
Marcel.

How exactly are you saving your edited photo? I just Exported a tiff with the 8-bit option selected and I got an e-bit file.

I checked the same thing. I had to use Irfan Viewer to check the info on the Exported photo.
When exporting at 8 bit I see original colors @ 24 bit/pixel (8x3 channels)
and when I Export at 16 bit I see Original Colors @ 48 bits/pixel (16x3 channels)

Here is my "workflow":
1. Select image in Lightroom and select "edit with".......image opens in Photo RAW 2023
2. For the sake of testing: i did NOTHING except click on "Done".....dialog comes, I save as TIFF same name, same location, overwrite.3. Check image: changed from 8 bit Tiff to 16 Bit Tiff.
UPDATE: creating a 8 bit Tiff export preset works fine as intended. To avoid an overwrite by a new 16 bit Tiff i would need to cancel my edit..... weird. I also wonder if "paste settings from previous edit" would work after a cancel. Either way.... the "done" option creates a 16 bit tiff from a 8 bit tiff :-(
UPDATE 2: Clicking "cancel" makes the "paste settings from previous edit" inactive :-(
NO idea how to keep the 8 bit..... :-(0 -
How are your File Preferences set?

This appears to be a bug. I don't have any Adobe products so I exported one of my images as an 8-bit TIFF. I double-clicked it so it would open in Photo RAW's Editor without going through the Browser. This simulates sending a photo from another program. I clicked the Done button and chose to save as a new TIFF after setting my Preferences > Files settings to 8-bit TIFF. The Save dialog automatically chose JPEG instead of my preferred default of TIFF so I changed the file type setting and it gave me a 16-bit TIFF.
This should be reported to tech support.

I got a reply from Ryan about this issue. The 16-bit output is by design for maximum compatibility with other software when returning the edited image to that software. It is not a bug. The Preferences setting for 8-bit is only for Exporting images or for _sending_ them to another program (also an export), not returning them back to that program.
