You're trying to clone onto the canvas. We've never been able to clone onto the canvas, there has to be an image file there to clone on to.

In the past, to fix this easily, simply duplicate the layer then merge them back together. This would need to be done before you start adding edits since they will become burned in after this procedure. After that, you can do your cloning.

In 2023, there is an option in the crop tool called Content Aware which will fill that for you. In this image the areas outside the photo...

    ... will be filled in.

You can try either option and then do your cloning if you still need to.

Or what is the best way, when we tilt / transform the picture, the edges which get lost - suppose we do not want to crop out to remove the empty space but just extend the edges to fill the frame.

That is exactly what I just showed you. It's extending the image to fill the frame.

Content aware cropping is on page 82 of the user guide.

The content aware did not work. The cloning expected is very similar to what you have - basically some water texture and few mm of "bridge ending.

Amit, if you are talking about the Transform pane in the Develop panel you have to use the duplicate Layer method Rick first described. The Content Aware Fill is only available with the Crop Tool.

Yes - I did use the transform panel - keystone option. Basically straightening perspective.

Very small amount needed - but few different ones (water + stone bridge).

Treat it as a feature request :-)

I just cheated with adjusting the borders :-)

If you'd like to suggest a feature, you need to do it on the Photo Raw project page, here...

    https://www.on1.com/products/photo-raw/ideas/

In the meantime, as Brian suggested, you need to use the duplicate layer method to fill in the canvas so that you can clone to it.

    Thanks Brian and Rick!

I have added a feature request as you suggested.

In most cases, content aware will do a better job, but in a crunch to accomplish what Amit was trying to do (before content aware was available), I duplicated the image layer, then created a 'new stamped layer'.  This bakes in the white areas outside of the image area to that layer, then the clone tool will work on the stamped layer's out of crop areas.
