Gradient Mask Question

Hi, trying out a new idea (for me anyway) I used a bed  sheet for the background but I want to once finished processing to add a gradient mask something like that shows in this image but as can be seen the lightened bottom part also overlaps the image so the question please is how do I get the gradient behind the image.

  Paint out the mask where needed.
