    What are your system specs?

In "Preferences", click on the "Keyword AI" tab. Deselect "Scan Cataloged Folders with Keyword AI". I found that this took a huge load off my CPU.

Good tip. That dropped 70% of ON1's CPU utilization while building the catalog.

Grant, I've added your suggestion to item 5 of the troubleshooting tips.

I'm getting really high CPU surges after Editing. When I return to Browse, the CPU surges up 70% & higher. I would appreciate any further suggestions on how to cure this. Support suggested deleting PerfectBrowse cache and also deleting On1 Settings file. Neither of these took care of the problem.

It sounds like you are using Catalogs and the cataloging process is still running. One of the changes made a few versions back was to throttle back the background task that builds the Catalogs so it didn't interfere with editing any more. If this is what is happening you can expect high system utilization until it finishes.

    • What are your system specs?
    • What GPU does it have?
    • Are you using Catalogs? How may photos are in it?
    • Where are your photos stored on your system?

You're using a 6 year old graphics card which may have only 4GB of VRAM, you didn't say. The program could be reverting to the CPU to accommodate things. Other than that, I don't know. Maybe one of the Windows gurus has some ideas.

My specs are similar to Cynthias except that I have a newer GPU. My CPU rarely goes above 5% whether Photo Raw is running or not.

I'm wondering if that GPU is actually being used, since if not, the CPU has to do all of the work. I'd suggest Opening Task manager Performance tab and watch the GPU while editing an image. You should see activity like this...

If you DON'T see much activity, that would point to a problem.

My computer was built in 2021. There's no way he would have put in a 6 yr. old card.

I am watching GPU during Edit & saw similar activity. Added a filter & On1 just crashed. It has been crashing while sitting idle too. And crashes when I tried several times to back up today.

That model card was released in 2017. That makes it a 6 year old design regardless of when it was placed into a system.

Cynthia, your system is a powerhouse compared to mine. I think you will find your problem is in the settings. I got a huge drop in CPU usage when I deselected "Scan Cataloged Folders with Keyword AI", under the Keyword AI tab in preferences. I don't use cataloged folders, but this change made quite a big difference.

Also check that the AI Processor is set to auto in the settings tab. It would be a good idea to put the Scratch Folder and the Browser Cache on your K drive.

As for your video card, yes it is a bit older, but I am using an RX 570 with 8 Gb of Ram and there is no problem. The Ram usage seldom gets near 4 Gb and the GPU usage is normally low with only occasional peaks.

I don't see where I can set the AI Processor to auto. In Settings tab, I see Reset AI Settings & Reset AI Retouching.

Is this what you're referring to?

It's at the top of the Preferences > System tab.

Sorry about that. I meant the Systems tab.

I boosted my Cache Size up to 10000 MB - it was at half strength.  Also boosted Video Card Strength. This may have helped.

I forgot to mention that the current On1 version, 2023.1, seems to have reduced the drain on the CPU.

I am using an old system, AMD FX 6300, 32 Gb Ram and Radeon RX 570. After I made the settings changes there was a huge reduction in CPU usage and then Ver. 2023.1 made further improvements. I am able to run several other programs while using On1, with no excessive demands on the system.

Due to crypto mining and COVID the RX 580 video card was probably the only available, reasonably priced card in 2021. It is an older card, but I don't think it is slowing your system down. It should be fine for photo editing.

On1 does a lot of work in the background. Although the tasks that it is performing are useful, they put a demand on the system. If you can disable the things that you do not need then you should be able to reduce the CPU usage.

Boosting the Cache Size may be a temporary fix. Because you are not using Catalogs you do not have the permanent, pre-rendered Previews which get stored in the PerfectBrowseCache. That size setting controls a different cache for previews from non-cataloged folders. As you browse different folders, the images it contains are rendered in the background and placed in that cache. When it fills, older previews are removed to make room for the new previews you are currently working with. This is explained in the Knowledge Base article Catalogs and Caches - ON1 Photo RAW 2022 & ON1 PHOTO RAW 2021.

Just upgraded to 2024 & am getting high CPU usage again. I don't use Catalogs. My On1 Cache is on the Windows drive. Should I move the Cache to the K Drive, where the photos are?

It's probably Keyword AI scanning your catalogs. In PR 2024, there is a status icon on the lower left in browse where you can see what's going on.

Cynthia I think that you should have a tech check your computer. If you have followed the suggestions here and are using ON1 2024 then you shouldn't be having problems. ON1 2024 is very fast.

My 10 year old system is running ON1 2024, I'm streaming on Spotify, file explorer is open, 3 resource monitors are running, my browser is open and running a Brilliance AI video as I type this comment. The system is running smoothly with low resource use. My RX 570 video card is running 3 monitors.

Have the tech check for apps running in the background and make sure that the hardware is configured correctly in BIOS and Windows settings. There is also a possibility that there may be a hardware defect.

Good luck. Let us know how things turn out.

You are right - it is the Keyword AI causing the CPU to surge, when I'm in Browse mode. (Stops in Edit mode). Is there any way to turn off the Keyword AI scan?

I've been telling people to go to preferences and disable everything keyword related, and you can try that, but apparently there is a bug that's keeping it from NOT running.
