2021 edits not showing in 2023

If you don't have sidecars, I suppose you will have to go back to 2021 and check the option (see screenshot) to save sidecars. Otherwise, the edits will only be stored in the 2021 database; I'm not sure that the database will be transferred when installing an ON1 update.

The .on1 sidecars provide a backup to the database. If you Upgrade every year the previous year's database gets migrated to the new version's database. 2021 is apparently too old for the migration to 2023 to handle. Most likely it only looks for 2022 for that.

Another advantage is you can easily move one of your photos with its edits to another computer by taking both the image file and its .on1 sidecar. Of course that other system has to be running Photo RAW as well. And, as you can see here they allow you to skip certain years and still move to a newer version when you are ready.

Yes, they do require a new file (they are generally pretty small( that has to stay with its image file. If you use the program to move your files around it will manage that for you. If you want to do it manually in the Finder or Windows Explorer then you must remember to do that yourself.

I've also found it convenient at times for troubleshooting to use the Finder (I'm a Mac guy) to duplicate an image file into another location so the program will see a 2nd copy without any edits as a brand new file while retaining the same file name.

Personally, I don't like the idea of all my edits being inside an opaque database as a sole source. I prefer to think of the .on1 files as backups to my edits.

The creation of .on1 sidecars has nothing to do with a file being layered or not. It is a preference setting that you turned off at some point as it is on by default.

Are you looking at any of your photos in the Editor or just in the Browser? It could be the edits are there but the previews haven't been updated yet.

I don't know if 2023 can migrate the database directly from 2021. That is something you'll have to ask support about. I would turn on the sidecars in 2021 so that 2023 can see them and update the database appropriately.

I have looked in both Editor and Browser and the changes are not present in 2023.

You need to turn on the sidecars option in 2021 then and wait for it to create them all. 2023 should then read those sidecars and add the edits to the internal database. At that point you can delete them again if you like but I recommend you use them always for reasons exactly like this.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to leaving the sidecar option turned on? It seems like that is just more disk space and one more file has the risk of not being kept together with its parent. If you leave it on, do none of the edits go in the database? And then what would be maintained in the database on an individual photo level?

I have just upgraded from 2021 to 2023, always skipping a year. This is the first time my database hasn't migrated! Is there a way around this? If not, how on earth can I see all my files in 2023 if I don't want to run both versions??

Have you read through all of the above? It pretty well covers everything you need to know about this.

Are you using the .on1 sidecar files? If so 2023 should be seeing your edits although the previews may need to be rebuilt.

Did you open one of the photos in the editor to see if the edits are visible there?

I don't know about whether the migration process can migrate from 2021 or if it has to have 2022 for migration. You should have seen a progress dialog if it was doing any migrating. You'll have to ask tech support about this.

I got tech support to help with this.  2021 will not migrate directly to 2023.  But he gave me a link to download a trial version of 2022 to install briefly to then allow upgrade to 2023.  Worked perfectly.  The link to older versions is: https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205534438-Product-Downloads-for-ON1-Owners

Thanks for the update Kevin. I'll post that on the other thread. Glad you're up and running again.
