CPU at 1000% on iMac i9
Hi
I am running Photo Raw 2023 ( just updated to 2023.1 to see if that helps but it changes nothing).
When I start it and do nothing the CPU load jumps to 1000% and the fans start blowing.
In the user interface there is no indication it is doing anything useful.
Why is it using 1000% CPU ? How can I find out what it is doing ?

Did you create any catalogs recently? If the cpu is busy during idle, it usually means Photo Raw is updating catalogs.

Not recently. I just noticed CPU load dropped after about 15 mins. That seems to be a change in 2023.1, in the previous version it did not drop, as far as I can recall.
So it may have been my lack of patience combined with bad experience with the previous version and a total lack of any indication in the GUI that it's doing something in the background.

Hmm, I was happy to early. Just I finished typing my answer ( and PR was idle) the fans started blowing again and CPU is at 800-900% again.
I did not do anything in PR, not clicked a single button.

It might be the AI Keyword process that is doing it. Because it is an AI it will use the GPU and it does run in the background as you browse through your files.

GPU is idle according to the Activity Monitor.
For the CPU all 8 physical cores (the odd numbered in Activity Monitor) are 100% busy and the hyperthreads vary between 0 and 50%.
And no indication at all in the GUI that Photo Raw is doing anything.

Removed all my cataloged folders and now CPU seems to be normal.
I also noticed the memory usage is substantially reduced ( from about 20GB to about 2.5 GB).
Looks like cataloged folders are to be avoided unless really needed ;-(

How many photos do you have in your Catalog(s)? I don't think it is the Catalogs themselves that is the problem. On my system with a single catalog containing more than 18,000 images Photo RAW is only using 2GB of ram and my CPU usage (M1, 16GB) is hovering between 16% and 36% while the program is sitting in the background in the Browser.
Somewhere in the Knowledge Base I read an article I cannot find right now that stated multiple Catalogs are better and one single Catalog. I've always used just one without any problems but if your library is larger than mine it is something to consider and ask tech support about.

I had about 35000 photos ( 375 GB) in about 20 catalogs.
iMac 3,6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with 40 GB 2667 MHz DDR4.
Getting that fully utilized is quite an achievement ;-(

How long have you let the program run to see if it will finish whatever it is doing? If it is rebuilding your Catalogs for some reason I can see it pushing the system to 1000% and with 35,000 photos it is going to take a while.
I'm going to refer you to Tech Support once again. I'm not sure where to go from here. You can take a look at the log file to see what kind of activities it is doing over and over to drive that kind of CPU usage but it can be difficult to dig through. Be sure to send your log file to support when you contact them.

This afternoon I re-added a folder to be the only catalog folder. It just contains about 2500 photos taken with my iphone(s), it's a mix of iphone 6/8/13 and contains jpg,heic and DNGs. Had to leave for a while but when I got back it was still busy and had used almost 11 hours of CPU time. Had to stop PR2023 at that time. Just restarted it and immediately CPU jumped to over 800% busy. I'll leave it running for now to see if it drops, but according to Activity Monitor CPU Time is already at 1:46:00, so close to 2 hours.
Looks like it's related to Keyword AI. If I switch it off CPU drops to about 60%. Whats strange is that when I switch it back on and restart PR2023 the CPU jumps to 800% for about 10-15s and then drops below 50%. Sometimes even almost idle. It now jitters a bit between 0 and 70%.
GPU is always idle, looks like PR2023 does not use my Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB, even if in Settings I change AI Processor from Auto to the Radeon.

I mentioned Keyword AI yesterday as a possible cause. Just like Cataloging, once it has finished doing its thing it will drop into the background and not make such heavy use of the CPU. We have the option to turn that feature off in Preferences > Keyword AI.
