Accidentally deleted photos, sidecar files trashed

When you Delete a photo from within Photo RAW it will also delete the .on1 and .xmp sidecar files for the exact reason you mention - to avoid leaving orphans all over your drive.

You could have used the Undo command if you hadn't done anything else in the Browser when you realized your mistake. The program would have restored both the photos and sidecars.

I don't know why the sidecars are deleted without moving them to the trash along with the photos. It sure seems like it should.

    Thanks Brian,

That was the thing though, the sidecar files weren't in the trash but remained in the folder, but empty.

I did forget the undo tbh, doh!. Next time I will remember.

Did you check the creation dates of those empty .on1 files? I haven't heard of this happening before which makes me wonder if the originals were deleted then new ones created before the image files got deleted. The Keyword AI function is constantly creating new .on1 files for the keywords it finds.

This is something that should be reported to tech support. Especially if you can duplicate the problem and give them steps to reproduce it for themselves.

The issue that the .on1 sidecar file is not ending up in the waste bin when deleting a file accidentally is a long known issue, has been reported to support many times and has never been corrected.

You're not the only one with this issue. Read this: https://www.on1.com/plus/forums/topic/on1-sidecar-file-not-restored/#post-2229301

The reply from Support (Ryan) four month ago was: "We've managed to find a reproducible case of this on our end and have filed a bug for it to be fixed.  Thanks for your patience and assistance."

I just checked: It's not corrected in Photo RAW 2023.1

I will open my old ticket marked as "solved" and report it again.

Thanks. It's odd though as I did try and quickly reproduce it, with different results. This time it left behind just one sidecar file. I'll have another look at it this weekend when I have more time.

I played around with this a bit last night too. On my system, even though the sidecar wasn't in the trash, it wasn't left behind in the folder the photo was removed from either. It simply wasn't on my system any longer. Until I used Undo then it reappeared. I wonder if it is a Mac vs Windows thing.
