AI Mask Differences between Super and Effects

That is surprising. I would think that either method would call the same AI routines which should generate the same results.

I can see why it could miss the center of the tower at first with all the cross girders and sky behind them.

Are you actually letting it generate the mask? Or, are you looking at just the initial red and blue previews?

If you're selecting architecture from the menu, then you'll get what the AI thinks is architecture

Instead, use Mask AI to make a selection the same way that Super Select does...

Given the description in the OP, I think that each method produces the same initial result in this case missing a middle section of the tower. It's just that the super select option lets you adjust the mask before it is actually generated by clicking in the additional areas you want to add before the mask is actually generated. While generating a mask when adding a filter in effects you cannot click additional areas, you just have to accept that mask and modify after it is generated. The difference is not a bug this is the way each is supposed to work.

In either case most probably the mask created will not be perfect and will have to be cleaned up once the mask has been generated.  ---- Seems like I used the word generated too many times here ;-)

Agreed. That's what I said in my post. You can't make extra selections in the filter, but if you use Mask AI you can select other areas just like Super Select.

This is confusing.  In the Effects tab, adding a new effect and clicking on the mask brings up an option the includes Mask AI (on the left) and a pulldown menu with different options (including architecture). THAT does NOT generate a complete mask and does NOT allow adding to the mask by clicking on it.  And, NO, just accepting the mask (with the gap) and completing does not improve the mask.

HOWEVER, the suggestion to go into effects and select the mask option and THEN use the Refine option and select Mask AI from there (as shown above) DOES indeed allow clicking on the missing section of the tower to fill it in - just like Super Select!! So there are two "features" both named Mask AI in two different places and they work differently.  Sounds like a bug to me.  I hesitate to report it since I am not sure if that would be considered a bug by ON1. It could be (as suggested above) just different logic in different parts of the program.  Any thoughts?

Thank You, Rick, for the help on how to get the mask corrected in the Effects situation.

Go ahead and contact support but instead of reporting as a bug ask for more clarification on the differences and why they exist. Then you'll have a basis for talking how it might be made better.
