importing vs copying onto HD?

I'm sure this is a silly question, but what are the advantages of "importing" photos compared with just copying them to my hard drive and developing them from there?

  While importing you can rename, add metadata etc. (see page 44 of the user guide for more details.) Otherwise there is no difference.
