I may have found a work around, took the raw file and did an AI auto adjustment in develop then saved as a .psd 16 bit.   Brought it back in and AI identified everything correctly.  Give it a try and see if you can confirm.

Develop Tone & Color AI Auto

Then out to .psd 16 bit

    Bring back the .psd

I'm getting the same results as before (no AI masking)

Hmm, curious.  Maybe it is system dependent but it did work here.  Going to give it a try with some of my problem pics.

Edit, tried on another picture and it didn't work, so, not a surefire solution, rats.

For me the same result in version 2023.5 17.5.0.13960. Mask Ai no longer works in many photos.
I took the trouble and installed 2023.1 17.1.1.13620 and compared mask ai at about 100 photos.
In version 2023.1 17.1.1.13620, the mask AI worked for all photos.
In version 2023.5 17.5.13960, mask Ai does not work in 37 photos. The entire picture is masked.
    Will report it to support.

Interesting.  I will have to do the same.  I will report the results back here.

I'm going to hazard a semi-informed guess at what's going on.  Perhaps when they added Foreground / Background detection they placed it ahead, programmatically of the rest of the detection, so if that fails it doesn't do the rest of the analysis.  We will probably never know but in my experience as a programmer, these things happen.

Think that could be quite right Keith - sounds logical anyway.

I'm following this thread and I'm still having a masking issue with 2023.5 (17.5..1.14051) that I received recently.  I can't go back because of the Nikon Z8 file format is not supported in 2023.0.

Am I the only one still having this issue ?

You'll have to define "masking issue". That's a little vague to know if others are experiencing it or not.

I have the same issues described in this thread.  AI faces are not selected or not correctly selected for example.  It used to work well before I upgraded to 2023.5 to support the Z8.  Just to be clear, 2023.5 still works well on images imported with previous versions but AI mask for faces is not working for files imported with 2023.5.

If I mask the faces manually, then it works.

I thought it was the same issues everybody in this thread were describing with 2023.5 so that is why I was following the thread.

Your problem is different than what this thread is discussing Jean-Francois. It sounds like you are talking about using the Portrait module which isn't finding the faces for you. This thread is about the general Masking AI.

In either case, you need to report this to tech support.

I've found my answer.  I didn't expect that but changing the AI processor was causing what I was experiencing.  I've put it back to AUTO and everything seems to be working again.  Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Support posted a new article to the Knowledge Base last week stating that they have discovered a problem where changing the Preferences setting for which processor is used for doing the AI work can cause it to fail in all cases, not just keyword searching. Be sure to leave the setting at Auto.
