How to select multiple folders.

You can select multiple folders in the grid. I think it's only good for file operations though, you can't open just those folders to view the photos.

I have the top 4 folders selected in this screencap. Select the first and CTRL select the rest, or select the first and SHIFT click the last.

I cannot get a grid view for all of the folders. I thought I may have found an answer but it did not work. The folder icon above info has copy to my catalogs but it only selects one folder at a time.

To be clearer, I want to take all of the folders in my catalog and put them in one folder. This way I can keep the catalog or remove the folders all at once. The cataloging is not working right so if I have to remove the folders would be OK and start over again. but I can only select one at a time. Either way but selecting one at a time is not efficient..

You're looking at the Catalogs pane and apparently you've created a separate Catalog for each folder. You can only work in one Catalog at a time with that structure.

Go to the Browse tab instead. From there you can work with the actual file structure on your drive(s). Then you can navigate to the parent folder for all those Cataloged folders you've shown. I don't know if your Magnolia folders are in the same folder as the Felton and Delaware folders. If they are not you won't be able to work on both sets of folders at the same time.

Photo RAW is based on a Browser. Think of having only 1 Finder window to work with. You can only see the contents of the folder you are currently viewing.

To be honest, I do not remember creating all of the separate Catalogs. The original structure was one folder called House Construction with each of the folders, catalogs, in the House Construction folder in Browse. How it got separated I do not know.

So, what I think I should do is remove all of the Catalogs in the Catalog pane and start again and see if I can get the House Construction folder in Browse to Make a new Cataloged Folder and this time keep the folder structure set up the way I have it. The folders were set up by iPhone which seems a good idea.

So how do I remove all of the Catalogs without having to do it one by one. As I said before, the catalog is not working right and may be because I have too many catalogs. Either way I think I should start again.

The only way to remove all the Catalogs at the same time is to Reset the entire program. This will wipe everything except your edits and metadata changes. Removing them one-by-one may be easier than restoring everything to get your program back in shape.

FWIW, you may not have created all those individual catalogs yourself. I have all my photos in my Pictures folder and I have Cataloged the entire folder as a single Catalog. There have been a couple of times when I've done something I haven't been able to narrow down that has caused the program to create new Catalogs for the sub-folders in which ever folder I had been working in.

If you have a good backup from before this happened you can restore your ~/Library/Application Support/ON1 folder, in particular any folders in it with 2023 in their names. This is how I recovered but I caught it right as it happened so my daily backup was all I needed and I didn't loose anything.

I am glad it is not only me. I am not sure when it happened but I only recently started using ON1 BU, but I do have Time Machine. This too may be a long process figuring out when it happened. I will try it first before considering reset or one-by-one.

I have only edits and metadata changes, no significant presets, clouds so far. Not that far along in ON1 to have added anything.

I would hope support is aware of this problem. These folders are iPhone and not sure if this is part of the problem. As you remember I have had iPhone upside down photo problems before.

Brian, are you saying to replace the whole ON1 folder or just a particular folder? I believe I will have to go back to PR 2022. Is that a problem?

You can replace the whole folder but the only items that really matter to this problem are those sub-folders with 2023 in their names.

"I have only edits and metadata changes, no significant presets, clouds so far. Not that far along in ON1 to have added anything." In that case if it was my system I'd go ahead and reset the whole program. If you haven't added any Extras you're not going to loose them. When the program is running again all you'll have to do is recreate that one Catalog which contains all those folders or your entire Pictures folder if that's what you want.

I haven't reported this to support yet because it is too random appearing for them to do anything with it. I want to get the cause nailed down better so they have something to work with.

Just to confirm: I should replace 2023 with all items in it with a previous back up when, if this happens again? From ON1 BU or Time Machine?

You want all folders with 2023 in their names.

Note that you won't have all the folders shown. The highlighted folders are what you want to restore. I would do it from Time Machine. Do you know approximately when those folders showed up? Restore from the day before that.

Thanks. I would assume Sandbox is not necessary since it is a log.

I removed each catalog one-by-one and cataloged the House Construction folder. I would have had to probably gone back to PR 2022 which I assume it would not work. So far I have 2 green dots out of 48 folders. I assume that means they are done and I have to wait for the rest to catalog. Hopefully it stays as one folder but will follow your advice.

Appreciate your help, Brian and Rick's.

Now that I have the folders organized the way I want, I am not sure it is cataloging. I hear the fans but all I have after 24 hours is 2 folders out of 48 with a green dot for a total of 3 photos in 24 hours. This does not seem right. All 48 folders were set up by iPhone and most do not have a lot of photos in them. Furthermore their file size should be small.

Does the green light indicate that the folder is done cataloging? Why so little in 24 hours?

You keep saying the folders were set up by iPhone. That isn't true. The iPhone cannot create a folder on a Mac anymore than a Mac can create on on the iPhone. It wouldn't matter in any case. A folder is just an organization structure for the file system.

I'm not sure where those green dots are coming from. The Cataloging process does not mark the folders it has finished. The only way I get Color Labels on my folders is by assigning them myself.

Take a look at the Activity Monitor. Check the CPU & GPU activity levels, they should be pretty high while cataloging is going on and drop once it has finished.

iPhone created the folders by location and date on the phone and when imported the structure stayed. See my attachment in the previous post with Rick which shows how the phone set it up. I had nothing to do with it. Also, in that post with Rick shows one of the green dot. Again I did not add it, it is just there. Maybe I am using the wrong term but in the attachment with Rick are the folders I am trying to organize. I did remove each catalog one-by-one and went to Browse to the top folder called House Construction with all 48 sub-folders and right clicked to make cataloged folder.

Activity monitor is up and down with fans running. So, I guess their is no way to know when it is done until it is quiet.

Yes, you just have to let it run until things quiet down.

I found this on page 30 of the User Guide:

"The cataloging process is designed to work in the background, so it doesn’t affect other work you do in any Photo RAW module. (You’ll see a small progress indicator to the right of the folder as this process happens.)"

I'm guessing the green dot is that progress indicator. There used to be a progress indicator but it wasn't reliable and it was removed. This must be its replacement.

I saw that in the user guide but I have never really seen a progress bar just the one or two green buttons. I never get more than those first 2 green buttons, though.

Is there a limit to how many folders, sub folders, you have for cataloging. I have Delaware, House Construction, and then the folders you see with another sub-folder. I am only asking because the cataloging seems hung up.

Obviously I will give it more time.

None that I am aware of. I have my entire Pictures folder cataloged which contains hundreds of sub-folders nested 3, 4, or 5 levels deep. It contains ~17K pictures. It took over a day for it to complete the cataloging process on my M1 Mini.

Well it is 48 hours and my fans are still active. The file size is only 13GB. I set the preview size on the top folder House Construction to Medium but the sub-folders are set to standard. I cannot change it even right clicking on each folder and trying to set it to medium. I was hoping a smaller preview size would help but as i said i cannot change it. Should it take this long? Any other ideas? I will close Firefox and see if it helps.

"The file size is only 13GB." What file is that big?

"I set the preview size on the top folder House Construction to Medium but the sub-folders are set to standard." That isn't possible. You specify the preview size when you tell the program to create a Catalog from a folder. All the photos inside that folder and all its sub-folders will have the same size previews. You cannot set one folder to one preview size and a sub-folder to a different size.

"Should it take this long?" So it would seem. How many photos are in all those folders? There isn't anything to do except wait for it to finish.

Have you see the Knowledge Base article Catalogs and Caches - ON1 Photo RAW ?

House Construction folder with all of the sub-folders total 13gb not just one file. I am not sure how to give you a total photo count without opening each folder and counting. Most are iPhone photos so file size should be small for each photo.

When I right clicked on the Construction folder in Browse to Make Catalog I chose medium size for preview but when I checked for preview size in Catalog, House Construction is set for Medium but the sub-folders are not and I cannot change it by right clicking on each folder for changing preview size. I agree that all previews should be the same as the top folder, House construction.

Right now, I am only using catalogs because I do not know how to set up a smart album without a catalog.

Unfortunately I cannot upload a screen shot for you to see. For some reason the post here will not let me.

You can find the number of images by selecting the House Construction folder in the Browser and turning on the Show Sub-folder Contents option. A count of the number of images displayed will show in the top right corner of the Browser window.

Another option is to use the Finder's Get Info command with that folder selected then subtract the number of sub-folder from the Number of Items count.

My iPhone RAW photos are 52GB. They are just as large as those from my Canon R5. If you've got jpegs they will of course be much smaller.

"When I right clicked on the Construction folder in Browse to Make Catalog I chose medium size for preview but when I checked for preview size in Catalog, House Construction is set for Medium but the sub-folders are not and I cannot change it…" I've explained this to you. No, you cannot change the size of the previews for the sub-folders. You set the image size for the entire Catalog.

"I am only using catalogs because I do not know how to set up a smart album without a catalog." You can do it but they aren't very useful as you would only be able to search the currently selected folder. The only way to search, Smart or otherwise, multiple locations is to use Catalogs.

A screenshot isn't going to help. I've seen all of them I need. I'm going to repeat this one last time. YOU JUST HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CATALOGING PROCESS TO FINISH. If thing things are not working properly you'll have to contact tech support.

It seems to be calming down with an occasional revving up. It would have been nice to have a medium preview for all folders but apparently I cannot change preview once set. I can ask support and see what they say. Anyway it seems to be working better. Thanks for your help.
