How To Make A Folder
I want to move all the photos from one of my Smart Albums to one folder. Smart Album (through search and keyword} found all my photos from various folders but now I want to have them in the same folder. Is there a way to do that in ON1?
-
As a test, I added a keyword to photos in 3 different folders then created a smart album to collect them.
After that I simply selected all photos in the smart album (select all) and dragged them to the empty folder. All 3 photos were moved from their original folders into the new folder.

Rick, was this an Album or a folder you moved photos too? I cannot drag the photos from a smart album to a folder because it resides in My Catalogs pane, but I dragged the photos to a new Album in My Catalog pane which I can access in Browse and make a new folder for the photos to drag into it. At first they would not drag into the folder but after a second attempt I managed some of the photos to the folder but not all. So I selected all again and managed to drag more into the folder but it said some photos already exist so I said keep both. Anyway, after a couple of attempts I never managed to move all of them, 270 out of 372. So I have a mess and not all of the photos from the album are there. A side note I am getting a write error message when moving the photos which I reported to Stevie awhile back which he said it would be fixed in the next release. Obviously it has not, so I will report back to Stevie. Meanwhile, I do not have all of photos from my Smart Album to one folder plus I will have to find the duplicates again. These photos are important and I do not want to loose them due to the issues I have encountered.

You should be able to move it to any folder you see in the Catalogs pane. I just tried it myself and it does work as described.

Ignore my previous post. I don't know why that showed up. Must have launched and older version I've got hanging around. Sorry.

I selected photos collected in a Smart Album (the actual photo is in it's own folder) and dragged them into a folder that I created in one of my catalogs which are just folders on the hard drive.
From this smart album showing photos from 3 folders...
to here, all 3 photos were moved from where ever they were...
By the way, there are no albums in your catalog pane. There are only folders there. This might be where you're getting confused.

I am little confused. Under My Catalogs I have Albums and Smart Albums. My first attempt dragging an Album called Fred 2 to Cataloged folders was a disaster. It ended up with my Applications instead and subsequent tries was always the same. I have no idea why this happened. So I tried to drag a Smart Album to My Catalogs and it will not drag, move. When I can get photos to move to a catalog folder not all of them move, I get a write error. I am getting a mess with photos going into the trash, too. I hope they are copies. Unfortunately, I cannot send a screen shot because it does not work anymore for me. Another problem. Apparently, Brian you were seeing some odd behavior just like I am. It should not be this difficult to make a folder of photos I collected through a Smart Album. I am contacting Stevie about the write and I am wondering if this causing some of my problems. I am not sure what else to. Meanwhile, I need to clean things up and hope I have lost any valuable photos.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. Screenshots showing us what you see are far more helpful than just a written description we have to imagine in our minds.
Are you using any Catalogs? If not, that would be why you have no entries there and we'll have to take a different approach. If you are then you need to expand the Cataloged Folders section so you can see the folder you will want to move everything into.

Brian, I am having problems getting screenshots to upload, error message "I can only upload images" no kidding that is what I am doing.
I cannot drag my Smart Album Fred to a folder created in My Catalog and when I drag an Album to Fred in My Catalog I get my Application Folder instead.
Going from Browse, Albums, to Fred I get a write error message.

No, you cannot move the Smart Album itself. You have to move its contents. Hence, the Select All and drag the PHOTOS to the new folder.
Apparently some of what you are trying to place into Fred is already there and instead of overwriting it the programs is throwing that error. In the Finder, either delete what is already there or, temporarily move it into a sub-folder until you have everything moved.

Tried what you said and I still get a write error. There is nothing in the folder Fred but I set up another folder and left it untitled. I tried Browse and select all from the Album and dragged into Untitled but instant write error file exist. Went to My Catalogs, Album, Fred, and select all, drag to new Catalog Folder and again write error. I even went to File menu, Copy to My Catalog and again write error. Sometimes it is preparing before write error and other times instant write error.

It sounds like you are doing everything right. It also seems like the error message about the files already being there is itself in error. That is the next thing you'll have to resolve and you'll probably have to work with tech support on
How to submit a problem to ON1 Tech Support - A Step-by-step Guide

I re-opened a previous ticket with Stevie about the write error and Cody just responded with the usual things to do. I wonder if the Album being like an alias has anything to do with the error message, but it still comes down to how you can combine photos from various folders to one folder. Meanwhile I have to do the usual for tech support which I have mostly done. Stevie once said it was a problem ON1 knew about that they would fix in the next release which obviously they did not do. I will continue to work with Tech Support and see if it ever gets resolved. I think it is important for it to work for organizing. Thank you both for trying. Some day I hope to actually edit my photos. :)

Rick and I are both able to do this. He is on Windows, I am on Mac. This is not a problem with the program. There is something going on with your system that needs to be resolved.
"Meanwhile I have to do the usual for tech support which I have mostly done." What does that mean, mostly? Either you've done it or you haven't. If not, why not. Those are the steps needed to get started. They fix a whole lot of problems so they are worth a first try before spending time digging into a more difficult resolution.
One thing they may not have suggested is reinstalling the program and being sure you give the permissions it asks for at the end of the installation process.

I agree, this is a system problem. Nothing to do with Photo Raw.

I am not sure what to say. Write error was a problem with ON1 back in February per Stevie which is why I was thinking it was still ON1. Brian I did most everything as I said except double check permissions. I was under the assumption with every upgrade permission would be granted when the previous version was granted but not true. When I checked permissions the last one granted was 2020 so I now have 2023 granted. I do not think it made much of a difference. I did do everything Cody requested and installed the latest update like you suggested.
I believe the write error was from past failed attempts leaving a few photos in the folder and cancelling any future attempts. So I compared the folders and moved only the ones not in the new folder. A long process when you have over 700 photos to check and when I did send a duplicate in sometimes it asked me to keep both which I agreed. Better than a write error cancelling everything. Anyway, as I said, a long process and I am not sure if I have every photo because the count does not add up between the 2 folders. I am off a couple hundred. I have tried everything to make it agree, filtered likes, dislikes, and now my counts are all over the place. Anyway looking at the folder it seems that I have everything i want so I am going to work with I have. At least it is now in one folder instead of all over the place. I have more photos to organize so I will try again and will hope it goes better this time.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you find the cause of the write error and I'm glad you've made progress with this. Good luck.

I appreciate all of the help and patience with organizing all my photos from the last 2 years using ON1 tools plus trying to learn the program. I think the lesson here is to have a smart Album to bring similar photos from various folders to one folder and then check for duplicates. Scrolling was uncontrollable, creeping, when checking for duplicates across folders so, having one folder will hopefully help. I will find out. I am going to try another batch of photos now that I have figured out a process to follow.

Well, I tried again and it did not work. I tried to move all of my .MOV files, setting up a Smart Album and making a blank folder to move to. Again, the same problem, write error files exist. How can files exist when it is a new, blank folder. So, I gave up and went to the MAC OS, finder, and did a search for the .MOV files and moved them into a folder which worked fine and no issue. Again, I really would like to use ON1 tools for organizing these photos but it has been a real challenge and a frustrating experience. Anyway, I am working with Tech support. We will see what they come up with.

That to me implies there is a problem with your databases. Something is telling the program that those files exist (or at least that is what it is reporting regardless of what is actually being reported). That message is coming from the program, not the OS which would give you options for overwriting or keeping both copies.
Have you tried the Reset Photo RAW 2023 option yet? Blow away everything but your edits and metadata changes and start from scratch as far as the program is concerned.

I tried again and it still will not work for me. I am in contact with Stevie and waiting for a response from him. I keep trying everything I can think of. I keep getting the write error.
I just right clicked and Show In Finder but it only allows one photo at time and over 1200 photos that is not going to work.

What kind of disc is it that is getting the error? SSD, spinning HD? Have you checked the drive with Disk First Aid? If it is a spinner you might need to do a surface scan to find bad blocks that cannot be written to.
0 -
It is a fusion drive, 128 SSD and 3.12TB. I ran Disk Utility and it says operation successful.
0 -
You might want to run a surface scan on it just to be sure. As long as you''re waiting for support to get back to you.

Surface Scan using what, Tech Tool? That will probably take awhile, correct? If so I will have to wait until the computer is not in use?
I am thinking of using my BU drive, not Time Machine, and see if I can make a Smart Album from there and then make a folder from there as long as I can keep from messing up by BU drive. I'll see.

Create a folder on your backup drive just for testing and copy some files there. That way you can't mess it up. If things don't work just trash that folder and you're right back where you started. You'll want it to have several sub-folders of course.
This will test whether the problem is with the drive or somewhere else.

If you have Tech Tool I would run that if the test to the backup drive works. It is much more thorough than Disk Utility.

I am currently copying 2 folders with multiple sub-folders including .ON1 and .XMP, hoping that the keywords will go along with the folders so I do not have to keyword again, to a separate HD. Copying is slow but will let you know when done.

The Keywords should have been automatically added to the sidecars when they were added to the photos.

Well, I moved the folders to another external HD, set up a Smart Album with keyword house construction and tried to drag the photos into a blank, single folder, on the external HD. It did not work. I got the write error, files exist. How can this be with a new folder? Anyway, I am waiting to here from Support and will continue to try different ideas. Brian, the only thing I can think of is I have a different hard drive, Fusion drive, but I do not know how that can be the issue. I am trying to do a surface scan using Tech Tool but I have to upgrade and find my Protege first. Again, I am open to ideas.

"How can this be with a new folder?" Because something on your system isn't configured properly to allow it to happen. It is a bad and misleading message. Obviously an existing copy of the files is not the problem. Therefore, it must be something else. Because it is happening across multiple drives it is not a hardware problem with them. That leaves the program not having the proper permissions to do what it needs, or, something in your filesystem's permissions isn't configured properly.
How techie do you want to get? Do you know what extended attributes are? They used to be called Resource Forks way back in the day only they have evolved into something much more. One of the things they do is define the permissions a program has to move around the file system and out of the sandbox that is supposed to prevent it from going where it shouldn't.
There is a free program you can download to examine those extended attributes. We can compare notes if you want. Otherwise, you're going to have to wait for tech support as I am out of ideas.
