I use an older Wacom Intuos 3 model but I did not program the buttons on it. I left them with their factory settings. I recommend going to the Wacom site and downloading the user guide for your tablet and reading there how to program the buttons.

I use a Wacom tablet too but I have never configured any of the buttons for mine either.  I still use the keyboard shortcuts.  Try using the tablet without setting up the buttons first.  There is enough of a mental learning curve to keep you busy for a few weeks :).  I do think you should map the usable area of your tablet.  I use only about 1/3 of the tablet space so I don't have to move my hand around too much.  Go to YouTube and search for Wacom.  They have a channel with all the videos you will need.  The title for the video I'm recommending is below.  I can't paste the link here.

"[Y]ou should map the usable area…" Keep in mind that reducing the drawing area on the tablet also reduces your fine control over drawing accurately.
