Are you talking about the .on1 sidecar files? Presets are a specific thing that the program has but all the files for them are stored in a common location and not with your photos.

The .on1 sidecar files are where your edits to both the image and its metadata are stored. You can turn them off but I do not recommend it. They serve both as a backup should you ever have to reset your copy of the program which will delete the internal edits database the program also keeps. Without the sidecars when that database goes, so do your edits. None of your other applications will even see them and they are small so they aren't consuming tons of disc space.

If you do want to turn them off go to Preferences > File and turn off the option Save sidecar files for non-destructive edits and metadata.

I highly recommend that you download the User Guide and at least browse through it if not read it outright. It will answer a lot of your questions about things like this.

Ok thanks Brian - I just wasn't expecting lots of files that can be seen by Finder and any other app when I open the folder.

Are these the sidecar files ?

    Thanks

The .on1 files are the sidecars. Notice that each of them has the same name as the jpeg file they are associated with. Any other app will ignore them because they will not know what to do with them or what the even contain.

Again, the User Guide explains all of this for you. You should download a pdf copy so you can search it for when you have questions about the program. You'll probably find the answer quicker than posting here and waiting for someone else to look it up so they can tell you. 😉

Apologies for reaching out as a newbie. I'll watch videos and read the guide so I don't trouble anyone again.

    Thanks
