Colour rendition on screen
AnsweredCan anyone explain what's going on with colour rendition on screen with Photo Raw 2023? I have some files I've been editing in Capture One 2022 and old Photoshop, and using XnView as a browser; the images look pretty much identical on screen between these, and also in IrfanView. But in Photo Raw, as well as Image Glass and some other viewers, they look massively over-saturated and brighter (basically, just wrong). They were ProPhoto but I saved as sRGB, made no difference (as tiff files, but tried other formats, no difference). There must be some setting in Photo Raw to make sure they render correctly, but I can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm on Windows 10.

Do you profile your monitor?
Some screenshots showing us the differences you are seeing could be helpful.

I have NVidia video card, a few years old, driver recently updated to most recent. Screen was calibrated using Spyder, but I'm not actually sure what's happened since I updated the NVidia, which seemed to take control of various things itself and I haven't yet worked out exactly what's doing what, but I think the difference in rendering must be due to settings within each piece of software rather than calibration.
I'll attach screen shots, Photo Raw then Photoshop.

The first place to start with color issues is always making sure the monitor has a proper profile to insure accurate color across the board. After updating drivers a new profile should be created to go with them.
I can see a definite difference between the two. Are both images in the same colorspace? Both Photoshop and Photo RAW use ProPhoto by default. If you exported/saved to a different space you can expect some color shifts as they get moved to fit the new, reduced space.
There are no settings in Photo RAW to control color rendering. There is a Soft Proofing mode where you can view an image in different colorspaces and have the program show any which are out of gamut. It's at View > Enable Soft Proofing.
You may have to talk with tech support about this.

Thanks. The images are of the exact same file, just as seen in the two programs. I tried both ProPhoto and sRGB but the difference remains the same with both. I will try to do a new profile and see what happens, and chase it up with tech support if it doesn't get anywhere.

NVidia (I suppose) had removed my calibrated profile. I recalibrated with XRite iStudio, and now the problem has disappeared. Strange how the lack of proper calibration affected some programs and not others, but anyway I'm glad I can now use Photo RAW.

Most likely it was the video drivers update that reset things to their default settings. Glad you're back in business.
