On1 Photo Raw very slow to start and close
AnsweredI wonder if anyone can help... Latest version of On1 Photo Raw installed on SSD, Windows 10, all drivers up to date, I have deleted the settings. Photo Raw takes about 5 minutes to start. I start the program and for about 5 minutes all I see are contours of the program main interface and it is in a way dimmed. After that the interface comes to life and I slowly get the images. But for the first 5 - 6 minutes, nothing. And as I close the program the same thing, it takes 5 - 6 minutes for the program to close database etc before it actually closes. As a result I am back to Lightroom where everything happens immediately.

What are your system specs? CPU, video card, RAM, VRAM, etc.

Thank You for Your reply. CPU is i7 4790, RAM 16, Graphics Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650 with 4095 MB memory. Maybe I should add, that the default image folder (that takes 5 - 6 minutes to open) contains less than 1000 images.

Is this a laptop system?
Are all those photos in 1 folder?
Is that folder Cataloged?

What other programs do you have running along with Photo RAW?
Do you have any anti-virus software actively scanning your photos folder? If so, that should be disabled.

Thank You again. Desktop, default folder has about 800 images, one bigger folder has about 30 000 images and another about 25 000. All those folders are cataloged. Usually as I start (well, started:)) Photo Raw I only have internet browser open, Photo Raw used to be about the first program that I started. No, I have no anti-virus software actively scanning photo folders.
But if I kept Photo Raw running for several hours and also used some other programs I might get a notice from Windows saying that I am running low on memory. So maybe this is a memory issue with On1 Photo Raw? I might get this notice _only_ if On1 Photo Raw is running. If I am using LR or DxO Photolab or whatever I never get this.

How much free space is left on your C: drive?
Have you moved the PerfectBrowseCache off it to another drive?
How big is the PBC?
I'm wondering if you might be running out of disk space on C: and the drive is starting to thrash with all the different needs it is trying to fulfill simultaneously. The PBC will grow to be as large as needed to store the previews for ALL the images in your Catalogs. I keep mine on a fast SSD with a direct connection to my system. It does not connect through a hub nor is it daisy chained with another drive to share the I/O connection.

C: disk size is 447 Gt and 171 Gt is free (when On1 Photo Raw is running, so maybe that is not the issue). PBC is on C: and in preferences I have set it¨s size to 9643 mb. C: is a SSD.

Disk space wouldn't seem to be the issue then. You cannot set the size of the Perfect Browse Cache. As I mentioned previously, it will grow to become however large it needs to be to store all of the previews.
The Cache Size slider controls a different cache, one that is used for photos not in a Catalog. The Knowledge Base article Catalogs and Caches - ON1 Photo RAW explains it. I had to read it a couple of times before it all sank in.

The only other thing I can think of is that your model video card does not have any of the dedicated AI processors others do. You'll have to ask tech support if that could be a factor. You should give them the link to this thread so the can see what we've been discussing.

Well, I had the program installed on I: drive (SSD). So basically I first did a comprehensive uninstall (in addition to normal uninstall I removed On1 folders from c:\programdata and users\appdata\roaming and cleaned the windows registery (after that reboot). And then just reinstalled to default c: and configured the program to use graphics card.

Thanks. I hadn't thought to ask about where the program was installed as I did not know it could have an impact like that. That's good to know.
