Operational Limits on ole Macs

I am glad you raised this. I have a 2019 mac mini, but high specs. When 2023 came in the graphics requirements were at the limit of my machine, so I built an external GPU. On Affinity, Photoshop and my noise reduction software, the speed increase is stunning but because ON1 doesn’t support external GPU’s (there is a bug which will not be fixed) it is very slow. I, like you, am worried that the new version will be far too slow for my kit, which is more than adequate for video and photo editing. On top of this the average update price that I would have paid for over two years would be more than the annual “rental” for Photoshop/LR, which I know runs at top speed on my kit.

Me too. Sounds like you have the same iMac as I have.
In reading the 2024 announcement, looks like that version will exceed our machine.

I'm on a iMac 5K Retina 2017 with 24gb Ram, yes On1 appears slow but not as DXO which I ditched last year.
2024 won't run on mine - end of life with just 2 cores.

Means a Mac mini M2, with 16gb Ram and use external drive to boost the storage and add dock/dongle for SD card.Is the way forward and with Sonoma & a new monitor/speakers. Be set for another 6 yrs, which will take me to 63yrs!

Sonoma is the name of the next operating system, which is going to be released next week I believe

Since my subscription is paid through version 2024, I will put the newest release on my m2 laptop. There will be no new versions of On1 for a while. The old rebuilt 2014 iMac will continue to be my main editing machine. I am not ready to retire that wonderful 5k screen. If anyone knows how to bypass the old iMac’s innards and keep the screen, let me know.

As long as both machines are connected to the same Bluetooth network you can just turn on Screen Sharing in the macOS. Set it so both systems see the same screen.

Another option is to directly connect the two systems with USB or Thunderbolt and boot the iMac into its screen sharing mode. I forget what Apple calls it or the hotkeys to get there, sorry.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592. this suggests the oldest Mac needs to be 2019 with Catalina in a much older Mac, so it might not be possible..

On mine, I will be getting cash back, but not from Apple.  Apple offer me £170, a Tech exchange shop quoted me £355 for the same machine and the additional 16gb I added. - thats almost the cost of the new monitor I have chosen.

The resulting leap in technology will keep me going to retirement lol!

    Waldemar Winkler ...

Sounds like we have the same computer...late 2014 5K iMac.

I decided to install On1 2023 along side 2022 and it seems to work fine. Once 2024 arrives, I'm going to install it as well even though the specs exceed my computer, and see how well (or not) it runs.

Since you already have the ability now to download 2023, and doing so doesn't replace 2022, maybe it's worth giving it a try.....Brian
