Any ON1 compatibility issues Intel/AMD CPU/GPU?

I have an AMD machine, it has a Ryzen 3700X and a RX 580 with 8 GB. Both were considered top of the line when they came out, I think I bought the computer beginning of 202 when the 3700X just came out. I don't seem to have issues when I use the program. At one point the settings were at 50% for VRAM and the program was a little sluggish but putting it to 80% cleared that up.

Some thoughts ... get at least a 7 series chip from AMD, I do see quite a few cores being used. I believe AMD is still better at multicore processing then Intel. I would also opt for a graphics card with a lot of memory - 12 to 16 Gb. I think the newer CPU and Graphics can speak to each other to maximize computing so don't go with an older components. I suspect that if my computer works very well a computer with newer versions of hardware would work great. Mixing Intel, NVidia and/or AMD shouldn't be a problem. Load the computer with at least 32 Gb memory, I still like spinning drives for storage but have SSD and M.2 drives for other things, I know you didn't ask but thought I'd give you my $0.02.

If you are not bent on building for building sake I would look at the Apple M chip computers. I don't own one but they seem to blow the doors off of Windows machines, I bought my computer a few months before the Mac Mini M1 chip came out and I probably would have opted for the Mac Mini at the time.

Not to start any OS wars but I agree with Vinny's comment about the new Apple Silicon systems if you're not wed to the Microsoft OS and Intel hardware. I got the 1st gen M1 mini and I love it. I can only imagine how well some of the newer models must run Photo RAW.

Check our some of ArtIsRight's YouTube videos where he reviews and compares the different M series models. His reviews are from a photographer's perspective and needs.

Do you have 8 or 16 GB RAM?

Thanks for the tip about ArtIsRight, I took a look. Pity he doesn't cover ON1 but your endorsement fills that gap. I found it interesting that he seems to suggest that Capture1, which like ON1 makes more use of the GPU, benefits less from the M1 than PS. If you see such a great performance from ON1, then PS users must be really loving the M1.

    I got the 16GB model.

Remember that the Apple Silicon systems do not differentiate between regular CPU accessible RAM and the VRAM used by the GPU. Both processors share the same memory space so get as much RAM as you can afford as it cannot be upgraded later. This is one of the things that makes them so fast; graphics data does not have to be moved from RAM to VRAM for the GPU to process then back to RAM for the CPU to see the results. Both processors can access the data right where it is.

I think I need to add this, agreeing with Brian as far as OS in case someone thinks I am biased toward Apple. I am a Windows person, have been for very long time and have no complaints at all with Windows but sometimes things evolve that are better than what we are used to. I plan on sticking with Windows but if/when the time comes I will give Apple M chips a look.

Just wanted to put this out there.

I know that some software developers optimise for certain GPUs, for example Blackmagic Design allegedly optimise their Resolve software for AMD rather than Nvidia. Do we know whether ON1 optimises their software for either?

Puget Systems did an interesting test of GPU impact on performance of the Topaz suite. It was striking to see how different the results were between different modules of Topaz (e.g. Sharpen, Denoise, Gigapixel) – GPUs that were really good at one were poor for another. Also striking was how older generation GPUs with less VRAM outperformed newer ones with more VRAM for certain tasks. Given these results, I suspect that it is not at all a given which GPU will be best for ON1. If anyone has seen a similar test but for ON1, that would be great.
