Hardware or Software Problem
I have a seven year old laptop that began distorting some of my pictures in late 2022. What I would like to do is send a sample raw file to a volunteer who has an up to date computer with ON 1 2023. I would like them to crop the picture and export the photo to a jpg and see how it turns out.
An extreme case was taken with my Canon G7X MK II camera at wide angle. It seems the camera focal length is a factor. Photos taken with a longer zoom (telephoto) are less of a problem and hardly noticeable. The problem photo was tightly cropped resulting in a highly distorted image that is completely useless. Photos taken with my Canon G12 are not a problem.
As a test and workaround, I used the Canon photo editor (DPP) to export the original raw photo to a jpg, then using ON 1 I cropped the Canon jpg and saved it as a new jpg. The result was fine indicating to me that there is clearly a problem with ON 1 and may have to do with the G7X lens correction software in ON 1.
If the photo is cropped and exported in ON 1 on a new computer and the result is good then the problem is likely my hardware, if not then there may be a bug in a newer ON 1 release. I do not see distortion in photos processed in older 2022 versions of ON 1.
EDITED
Note that there are known issues with the obsolete GPU in my tablet that I can live with. If this test indicates it is a software problem I will report it to ON 1 support and have it addressed.
Many Thanks,
- Bill

Hi Bill, I’m happy to take a look at your file, but I do not post my email address on public bulletin boards, or forums and I highly recommend nobody else do that either. How was your file to a file sharing service such a Dropbox or we transfer and then post to download link here I’ll take a look at it in a little bit.

Pete,
I tried sending you the file, but your email server seems to be full.
Brian,
I don't use sharing services, that's why I asked for the volunteer not to publish his/her address just to send it to the one I listed. The one I published can and will be shut down if turns out to be a problem.

That is how it is going to have to be if you want me to take a look. I highly recommend you remove your email address from your original post too unless you want to be found by all the spammers in the world. This forum is open to the public and all web crawlers looking for addresses to collect.
Post the download link and I will let you know just as soon as I have downloaded your file so you can remove it from the service. I am at home now so it will only take me a couple of minutes after I receive the link.

Brian,
Good point. Pete may have been a scammer. OOPS!
I suppose I can use my google drive to share the file? Is that a safe option?

Yes, your Google Drive will work just fine.

Please crop the photo to 16x9 horizontally, cropping (a lot) to the glass window showing a close up of "Zoltar". Then export it as a jpg. That’s all. If the jpg is distorted it will be quite obvious.

I've got your file if you want to remove it or the download link. I'll let you know what I see.

Great, Thank you.

What Export settings did you use? I'm not seeing any distortion when I used my standard Facebook settings for 2048px on the long side.
What do your Lens Correction settings look like? Here are mine.
Photo RAW is getting the Lens Profile from the open source LensFun database. If you are seeing something else the wrong profile is being used.

That's perfect no distortion. The problem must be with my GPU. I cannot even use the last 2023 update. A lot of new GPU features do not work. As it stands, I am back one level. I understand the developers are incorporating advanced capabilities of the newer GPUs that my NVIDIA GT 730M does not have. I will have to revert back to the first ON 1 2022 release. That is the most recent version of ON 1 that produced a correct jpg.
So it seems the only real fix for me is a new laptop.
Many, many thanks Brian.
