Crash window on startup ON1 2023
AnsweredHi everyone,
I had a crash in ON1 2023 a short while ago, and now each time I start ON1, I get the crash window asking me to report. Version # is 2023.5 (17.5.1.14051)
Searching the posts here, I found the "hold down shift key", which I duly did and chose the first option. This failed to clear the message. I am willing to try the second option, but the information there isn't clear to me: "Resetting...will remove your local databases and...migration from the previous version...if installed." Given I only moved to ON1 2023 this year, I'm being rather cautious. I don't mind if a database is cleared/removed - it won't take long to rebuild it.
Can someone enlighten me further on if I select this second option, and what is the likelihood that doing this might clear the crash report popup? I was prepared to live with it, but after a week, it's really starting to annoy.
And is there an alternative method to clear the crash report window?
Many thanks for any response.
Michael P.

The problem is that you have to clear the crash reporter window before you can do the Reset but the Reset window is in the way. Or maybe it's the other way around. In either case they get in each other's way.
The way out is to launch the program normally then either submit or ignore the crash report then IMMEDIATELY Quit the program like normal. Now when the program is launched again that dialog won't get in the way. If you still think you need to do the Delete Settings and/or the Reset functions just Quit and relaunch the program again with the Shift key held down to get to its dialog.

Many thanks for the speedy reply, Brian.
I tried your solution, but the "Report a Problem" dialog persists.
According to my reading of the knowledge base article (Author Stevie: "Delete Settings...") things like albums and catalogs - I have created none of either - will be removed/"nuked", as well as caches and databases. The KB article insists that none of my edits or images will be harmed. is this correct?
My belief is that caches and databases are created as part of ON1's regular operations and will be rebuilt over time so is no big deal. Am I correct in this belief?
A final question: is it a wise move for me to back up my image files prior to attempting a full reset of ON1?

Don't worry about Delete Settings or Reset neither of those will fix this problem. Actually you have 2 problems.
1) When a program is launched there is flag which tells the program that it crashed the last time it ran. That causes the Report a Problem dialog to be displayed. When you press the Shift key the Delete Settings stuff is shown as well. Both dialogs want to be answered first so neither of them can be properly and when the program continues it crashes again and the cycle repeats as you are seeing.
2) Deleting Settings and/or the Reset options should clear the crashing problem but you have to get rid of the Report a Problem issue first.
I've been through this myself.
Were you able to Exit the program normally without crashing? I suspect not since you are still seeing the dialog.

As far as I can tell Brian, I've been able to exit the program without any (report of) crashes occurring. I still get the crash report window on restarting ON1.
I exit either by selecting File | Exit, or sometimes, I use the dialog close "X" in the top RH corner.

Something is telling the program that it did crash even though apparently it did not. This is a new one for me.
I'm going to have to refer you to tech support then, sorry. Unless one of the Windows experts has any ideas.

Okay. Thanks for trying Brian, I'm very grateful for your efforts.
I'll wait overnight to see what eventuates here - I'm in Australia and it's noon-ish, so giving it a bit of time won't cause me any problems.
I did a bit of checking in the interim: I'm on a Dell XPS, and the Dell updater is running a bit behind with the graphics drivers - I'm on 532 or so, and the latest on the nVidia site is 537. So updating might be with a shot.
Thanks again.

ON1 Tech Support proposed an update of the graphics drivers to nVidia's latest.
This worked a treat - they suggested I use the option "clean install", which is in the "Custom Install" area - and is fine now.
Cheers,
