Export sharpening option
-
Photo Raw has so many ways to sharpen, I can't even list them all. These are off the top of my head with page numbers for the guide.
- Edit has sharpening in develop and the sharpening filter (P138/164)
- Resize has it's own sharpening module (P219)
- Export has a sharpening module as well (P233)
You need to find the method that works best for you.

Thanks, but I’m asking specifically about the pipeline of the sharping operation under the export module.
Let’s say I’m resizing a 32Mpx CR3 file to 2080 on the long edge. If resize within export and select sharpening, I want to understand if the module first resizes the image and then applies the sharpening, or if it first sharpens and then resizes
The difference could be important with regard to the recommended output sharpening practice.

I don't think it does either. As I understand it, sharpening takes place on the fly during resizing.

It resizes then sharpens. You can see this in the Resize module. Set it to enlarge by 400% then Zoom to 100% view. Now do your sharpening. It is being applied to the resized image pixels.

Thanks Rick. To be honest, I was looking at the Export module and hadn’t considered Resize AI. Based on the description you posted it does look like there’s an entirely different process going on.

Brian - thanks. Do you know if the Export module applies the same process as Resize AI or are they two different algorithms?

I don't know for certain but I'm pretty sure they are the same algorithms only Export doesn't give you all the controls that Resize offers.
