Ok I can answer this one as I have spent many hours trying to solve this one and I have solved it now. First and foremost dont ask tech support, they don't know! Thier last answer basically said, we dont know and are not supporting it.
I have a home made gpu using a high end very fast gaming graphics card, but have tried it with the apple approved egpu.
If you use the graphics egpu as a two way process, ie a single usb c cable into the egpu and back ON1 in all its forms fails to work, you get an ON1 window which is blank and that is it. All other software works fine with this arrangement (Affinity, Topaz, Photoshop, Lightroom, Elements etc) and it is significantly faster.
I had to use this as I am using a thunderbolt monitor. So it was a usb c cable into the gpu (and back along the same cable) and another usb c cable to the thunderbolt monitor via a usb c to thunderbolt apple converter.
I borrowed a graphics monitor and ran a usb c cable to the egpu and a display port/hdmi cable to the monitor and it worked fine. ON1 worked as it is expected to with no glitches or bugs.
    HOWEVER!
Running some speed trials with ON1 there was zero improvement with the egpu than without. Stitching a huge panorama took 5 mins without the egpu and 5 mins without it. Other tests showed that the egpu was making no real difference. Compare this to Affinity or Topaz, where there was a 5 fold speed increase.

So to definitively answer your question, the egpu will work if you use it as a pass through accelerator, but do not expect any real speed increase compared to Photoshop, Affinity or Topaz.

You would be better off updating the mac mini. I borrowed an Apple Studio to run some advanced Astrophotography software and that was fast, very fast

Thanks for that John. Have you let Support know what you have found? They might appreciate that.

I did send something back, but not in that detail. I didn't get any acknowledgement that they had received it. If you have a contact please pass it on.

I have the same contact as you, sorry. With their current workload I wouldn't expect a response soon but at least they will have the info to give to the engineers.
