Cataloguing folders

With both 2018.5.1 and 2018.5.2, I cannot use catalogued folders. The program freezes and a Force Quit is required. (Reported to support with log file).

Others know that I've been fighting with catalogs like this since last Dec, but the latest versions seem to have fixed most of it for me. David you should send in a support reqiest with your specs and details about the problem. Also mention the NAS and the size of your collection.

I have a WD NAS device but have given up using it for photo processing - it is too slow - and I am running a fast WiFi network.  The potential convenicence of having your photos accessible to multiple macs on the same network is nice - but I don't think the performance is there.  I process photos on an external (USB3) drive, and that works fine, but is still slower than processing on an internal drive.  I have an iMac27 (with the connected USG3 drive) and a MacBook Pro 15 which has an internal SSD drive.  Cataloging images on the MBP is several times faster than on my iMac with the external drive.  I think a lot of I/O happens during the cataloging process and that benefits from a fast drive and a fast interface.  Perhaps the key would be storing the images on the NAS but then puling down the images you want to process on the MBP.  You could catalog there, but this approach reduces the advantage of the catalog.

May people are having problems with the catalog process - perhaps you should avoid it for now.

Thank you all for your advice. I’ve sent details to Support and they have given me some advice to follow.

Looking at the log you sent over, the program is running into images which don't have previews created for them, so it goes back through the cataloged folders to regenerate those previews.  This process looks like it may be stuck.  I recommend navigating to the path below and deleting the ExploreService folder.  This will reset the program's cache, cataloged folders, and albums, but won't harm your images or edits.

I’ll see how this works out. Long term I’m looking at moving my photos off the NAS and onto a external SSD which should speed things up.

Can you include the oath they mentioned, I'd do this to see if it helps. It will not do any harm.

Mark, this is what Ryan at ON1 told me to do, it totally helped bigtime but when I re-cataloged my library all issues came back. I had to repeat these steps and not re-catalog in order for the software to be usable.....

Looking at your log, the program may be running into an issue processing a database cache or similar error.  I recommend navigating to the path below and deleting the ExploreService folder.  This will reset the program's cataloged folders, cache, and albums, but won't harm your images or edits.

    C > Users > Your User Name > AppData > Roaming > ON1 > ON1 Photo RAW 2018

Note, the AppData folder is hidden by default.  To reach it, press the Windows key on your keyboard + R.  In the Run dialog box which appears, type %appdata% and press Enter.  This will take you directly to the Roaming folder, and you can continue into the ON1 folders from there.

After deleting that folder, please then restart your computer and retry launching the software.

Thank you, I'm using a Mac, but this should help me find it.

Mark, it seems this cataloging issue is a problem for some with both Mac and Windows.

I am still having major issues with using multiple layers and masks.....

That old car photo I posted "before and after" pics of on ON1's facebook page last evening was edited in ON1 and it took almost and hour to do because of PR not responding and acting up once I got in to layers (3 layers and about 6 masked adjustments) It then took almost 20 minutes to export as a 2048 on the long edge 90% Jpeg! This is beyond ridiculous, when ON1 was working pretty much to par a few months ago for me I could of edited and exported this image in 5 to 10 minutes!

I bought Affinity and am learning it now so I can use that for heavy lifting when it comes to working with multiple layers and masks. I'd much rather use ON1 but when it doesn't work or works extremely poorly, well, common sense says to use something better and more enjoyable.

I'm extremely hopeful that the next ON1 patch and or upgrade fixes these issues, I hate having to use more than one editor to process an image!

    Hi Mark

    "Mac HD:\Users\<User Name>\Library\Application Support\ON1\ON1 Photo RAW 2018

Note, the Library is hidden by default.  To reach it, open a new Finder window, then press and hold the Option key on your keyboard while you click the Go menu at the top of your screen.  Select the Library option which appears.  From there, you can continue into the Application Support folder."

This still didn't work for me. So I ran maintenance scripts and flushed all the caches using Clean My Mac (or use Onyx or Cocktail)

Rebooted and the Cataloguing has progressed without errors for the last few hours. This is on my internal SSD and is only this years photos. If I try to do my NAS which has all my photos it would I think take days!

Jim, I to have noticed how slow it is to export a 2048 jpg!

For me at the moment Lightroom is way quicker at navigating my files via Smart Previews and much faster at exporting jpgs. Its a pity, On1 has a lot going for it but seems very buggy to me.

So its done cataloguing. 5 hours to do 107gb of photos. Another 360gb on the NAS....

When I catalog my stuff when in browse my CPU max's out and fans blast non stop, and trying to browse or even take an image in to develop is about impossible.  My library that I am using right now is about 100gb, I wouldn't dare try cataloging all my files; it'd be 2021 before it got done and it would probably cook a lap top per week trying.

I'm using lightroom right now for my DAM but that will all end in a couple months as I'm not renewing my subscription with them (unless ON1 becomes totally unusable for me). Everything else on this laptop works perfect, I'm not about to go spend 2 grand on a gaming lap top to see if ON1 works better on that.

They just need to work some bugs out and get these things fixed.....

Installed the update on my iMac (High Sierra) and my MBP 15 (Mojave Beta 6) and it still hammers the GPU and spins up the fans on both systems even when no cataloging is running .  Don't know about the other performance issues others were having.

David, you are running a beta OS which I doubt ON1 supports in full just yet (but will have to by release). Could this be the problem?

Same problem for an iMac running High Sierra and the MBP15 running the Mojave beta.  On1 seems to have no trouble with Mojave - as I have seen no difference in performance between the two OS.

Unfortunately, ON1 2018.5.3 for Mac has a lot of bugs still foremost of which is the very slow speed in both Browse and Develop modules especially if you're using a high resolution camera, 42 megapixel or so. This was not a problem with the old version of ON1 2018.1. So for now I went back to the old version of 2018.1 since it's faster and in reality there really is not much major difference from the 2018.5 version. Another really serious problem that I have encountered with the 2018.5 version is the very slow exporting to jpeg. I had a photo that had a very simple edit of just highlights and shadows and when I tried to export it to jpeg it took almost an hour to export it. That was ridiculous. The solution was to just disable the photo size pane. Then of course you loose your choices for different sizes. BUT if you have a lot of layers on your photo even if the photo size pane is disabled, it goes back to being slow.

I am using an "old" Mac  - a MacBook Pro 13", 2012, with 8 Gig of memory. But as I was telling support the speed has never been a problem with Lightroom or Capture One 11 on this Mac. Those competitors are working blindingly fast on my computer. So definitely there is a problem with ON1 2018.5 version and it's not our 'old' Macs. They have to quickly find a solution or they will have a lot of disgruntled Mac users ( I heard this is not a problem with Windows).
