30 day free trial
Just loaded the 30day free trial. 45 minutes later I have the icon on my desk top. I double click, it opens to a library of photos on my desktop. If I open one of the photos and then click on layers for example (on the right hand side of the screen) I get a message telling me ON1 has stopped working and it closes down. Doesn't matter what I select - layers, effects - I get booted out.

Hi Judy. According to the System Requirements, Windows 8.1 should work, but have you checked the other Requirements? If not, they're about 3/4 down the page at the link below. Can't remember if Win 8.1 has an Admin mode. If so, reinstall Photo Raw as an Admin.
If none of that helps and no one else here has any ideas, you can open a support request with the link at the top of this page. You should include your full PC specs in the comments.

Installing it as Admin is a good starting point. You can also check the log file which might be kind of cryptic, but ... It is a text file, but not formatted nicely with CR and LF on it. It can be found here:
C:\Users\Kevin\AppData\Roaming\ON1\ON1 Photo RAW 2018\ON1 Photo RAW Log.txt
With the exception of "Kevin" obviously. :)

If On1 detected any problems bedore it crashed they'll be listed in the log. It also has other info that support can use. It's more of a tool for them than us. It's easier to get the log from the On1 Help menu if you can do it before On1 crashes. If you send a support req, include a copy of the log.
It's dissapointing that you've had problems so quickly but I hope you'll spend some time to try and resolve it. Photo Raw does do a nice job.
