Photo changes when going from effects to layers

Sorry, don't know what that is all about since Layers doesn't do exposure or sharpening. If it were me I'd be doing some experimenting to see if it's repeatable and if the results are the same when going into Layers from Browse, Develop and Effects.

I can only get this particular problem to occur on a single image.  It's a jpg scan of an old black and white picture.  It opened in Layers by default.  I switched to Develop, and made some overall tone and color adjustments.  I then clicked on Layers and the picture changed.  This time, it didn't look sharpened, but it did get brighter and more washed out.

I found another way to cause a similar issue on just about any picture.  I'm not sure if it is the exact same problem or why it is more visible on the low-contrast black and white image, but if I take any picture and start flipping between Develop (or Effects) and Layers (without making any changes), it will get sharpened each time.  After going back and forth 3 or 4 times, it becomes very noticeable.

So if you're opening your photo in Layers, I'm guessing you're either using On1 as a plugin or right clicking in file explorer. In either case, once it's in Layers you're working with a PSD file, not the jpg.

If you can reliably recreate the problem then you should make before and after copies for examples and attach them to a support ticket with a full description of the problem and a copy of the logs. I'm sure On1 would want to know about it.

I did some more testing and narrowed it down to the Haze slider.  Here's how to reproduce it:

    1. Take a photo into Layers (for some reason this does not happen if you haven't already been into Layers).
    2. Switch to Develop
    3. Make a large change with the Haze slider
    4. Lower the saturation to -100 (this is just to make the problem more visible)
    5. Switch back to Layers

When you go back to Layers, the image will change.  It appears to lose contrast or possibly it undoes some of the changes made by the Haze slider.  This happens regardless of the image, but it is difficult to see with a full color image.

I'll submit this as a support ticket with a few screenshots.

Something I just thought of, is your Layer a Smart Layer? If it's a Smart layer it allows you to re-edit a layer that you've already edited. If it's not Smart then every time you go to Effects you're adding more edits on top of the existing edits.

Edited: I just tried what you've described both with and without using a Smart Layer and I agree, the image changes when going back to Layers, however when using a Smart layer it changes back again when returning to develop. It's the same every time. Looks like Haze doesn't render the same in both areas.
