Paste mask in Layers module

I want to isolate a subject from its background so that I can montage it onto another image.

I have already accomplished a mask in effects. To remove everything else I copied the mask presuming to paste it onto a colour fill layer.   

However when I move to the layers module I no longer have the copied mask available to paste.

What am I missing?

  What you're missing is that it's not possible to take a mask from Effects to Layers in PR2018. This problem is fixed in 2019, but that won't help you at the moment.

  I have tried saving the mask as a jpg and adding it as a layer to get around the problem, but it's a real pain to do and not worth the time.
