Blown Out Sun
Here's a photo with a severely blown highlight where the sun is peeking through the clouds. I've tried to get it to settle down, using a luminosity mask and trying various filters, but nothing really looks all that good. Suggestions? Hopeless, perhaps? Thanks.,

Is this from a tier 1 camera in full resolution RAW?
ON1 Photo RAW 2017.7 and 2018.5 - Compatible File Types and Supported Cameras

Yes, a Sony Alpha 6500 shooting RAW.

Once an area is fully blown out, there is no longer any data available to adjust. If you have access to any other RAW program, you can see if they can pull out some detail which can then be sent into On1. I have better luck with blown areas in Lightroom than On1, but it's still a gamble.
If those suggestions fail then you have a few things that you can try but honestly unless you have very good skills it's hard to make any of these look realistic, so:
- paint with color. This will change the color but you will still have no detail
- add a texture to the blown area
- replace the area in layers (same as replacing clouds)
- clone an area of clouds to cover the blown area
- a combination of any of the above.
- Just leave it as it is, everyone knows the sun is bright!
Good luck

Thanks, Rick. Those are good suggestions that I hadn't considered. I'll play around with it.

Owen, I agree with Rick's comments. The best thing you can do is try to add something into the blown out area (assuming there is nothing there).
Earlier today Matt K posted a On1 2019 demo where he did a sky swap using the new layers module. It looks like the solution to your problem will be a lot easier in a few days/weeks (beta or release). If you are a Plus member, I recommend checking out Matt K's Oct 12th post on https://www.on1.com/blog/category/on1-plus/
Once On1 2019 is available, there are a number of existing skies provided with On1 that could help solve your problem. See skies 3, 33, 37 and 39. If you have any other shots from the same location/time that aren't blown out, I recommend using them as your first option.
I had a similar problem with one of my shots. I used Rick's other solution of leaving it alone to let everyone know that sun was bright. The only thing I did was to blend in a tiny bit of detail using clouds as a texture, but kept the sun bright.

I think I saw some where that 2019 will be better at pulling detail out of bright areas with the local adjustments. Fingers crossed. Isn't Monday the 2019 Beta day?

That's the rumor I've heard others say, but as a Software Engineering manager with many years of experience, I can tell you that the software will be released "when it's ready". On1 2019 is a complex piece of engineering with a lot of moving parts. It takes time to get everything "right" before the beta. Even then, there are many types of cameras, lenses, RAW formats, display cards, processors and operating system configurations so there will be a few bumps in the road before the final release.
I'm looking forward to seeing the beta of 2019. I never dug very deep into layers in 2018.* because layers was so separated from Develop/Effects. 2019 brings everything together into what looks like a very nice/easy to use package (obviously with a new learning curve - but that's part of the "fun" of our photographic hobby.)

Thanks, everybody. I've done some sky replacement for other images, and I can see how that could work if the right sky were chosen. It's a tricky business. I too am looking forward to On1 2019, with eagerness and dread. We'll see how it goes.
