Disappointed again
Yet again I feel ON1 has let us down with the release quality of 2019. I feel another beta should have been released, there was another two weeks to improve on it and still release in Nov. It doesn't mean it would be ready even after another beta, but it wouldn't have hurt to try.
I installed it on my laptop because I wasn't willing to risk putting it on my main PC for real editing. If my laptop had knees, it would drop to them when PR 2019 starts up. As it is I will have to wait for some updates before I can actually use 2019 for paid work. I was excited, not so much now. Paid for 2019, just so I can stick with 2018!
Photo RAW seems to be beta quality for 3-5 months after release every year. I've said it before, we all want new features... I am super excited that these features are in the works, but please stop rushing your software out the door. PLEASE!! PRETTY PLEASE even. It may work great on MACs, but we don't all use MACs. I will never use a MAC, I'm not willing to pay the brand name premium. I would like to switch to Linux but you don't support that.
I could go on, but I won't...

You realize that you haven't actually said what's wrong. Right?

I thought "If my laptop had knees, it would drop to them when PR 2019 starts up." was a good enough indication of the problem. It has major performance issues, tons of lag, many times my cursor won't even move because of whatever PR 2019 is doing. I have already let it sit for many hours (even overnight) to update the cataloged folders.
On top of the performance issues, it crashes sometimes or just stops responding so I have to close it and re-open.
Also, I had it remove all the old version during the install process.0 -
From what I have seen from the forums, many people are having issues. I should stop expecting any different from ON1 with new releases.
One of the reasons Adobe dominates this market is because they don't release software in a beta state. I know ON1 has far fewer employees and and is much smaller than Adobe, but that does not make this acceptable.0 -
And since you haven't mentioned it, have you checked the GPU to make sure it's set properly for On1 2019? That needs to be checked after every update.
BTW, yes, cataloging is a killer but it's temporary. just let the catalog finish and it will settle down a lot.
Edited: forgot to mention, in addition to setting your GPU, try this as well...
For windows 10 users, you can go to setting from the start menu, select system, on the right scroll to the bottom and select Graphics settings, make sure you have 2019 showing there and set to high performance. If not browse and add it.

I did check that ON1 is set to use the GT 730m instead of the Intel GPU, the cateloging finished, but still having performance issues, not as bad, but still far worse than 2018.
I did not know about the Windows 10 graphics settings, just set it now. It didn't help. My next step is to totally uninstall PR and delete the cache files and let it rebuild. It could be an upgrade process issue.0 -
I just removed all my Cataloged folders and after the last one was removed I now have the Windows 10 spinning circle and PR 2019 is not responding. I did nothing else, just removed cataloged folders.

I feel the same as Matt …. just overwhelmed by this being so hyped and then not as it should be. How do you set the CPU for this version Rick? We are not all computer nerds. If there is a major change in CPU / graphics requirements tell us first. I have tried to align layers … sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it tries and fails .I can't find the right controls much of the time. If it goes wrong and I just want to start again I get a save happen which I did not ask for and I then have to search for all the unintended "on1" files. I am not going to go on. I have supported On1 for several years but I think that possibly this will be ending,

I work in IT, I know that things don't always go as planned. I know that there are always bugs, nothing is every perfect. I know that the people at ON1 are doing the best they can with what is probably a fairly small crew and what they are working to create is very amibitious and will be amazing when they get it right. However, if it has this many issues, it should not be released. There are many people who are not tech savvy, they don't know how to work through major issues and they shouldn't have to.
Would this quality be acceptable in anything else you buy? A TV?.. Microwave? Washer/Dryer? Phone?0 -
So I haven't uninstalled/reinstalled yet. I did remove all the files in the Appdata folder for ON1 and let it rebuild things. I also removed all my cataloged folders first.
After doing this, I then re-added 3 folders to my cataloged folders. I let it cache everything and then went to test it out:While in thumbnail view, if I click a folder that has photos in it, it does not update my photos in the thumbnail sections of the program, I still see the same photos. I then click on another folder and it still doesn't update the photos that I see in the thumbnail section, still see the photos from the original folder... they are static. I have a few different folders and subfolders and it does nothing when I click on any of them to view the photos.
When I change to filmstrip view, it works, I can click folders and it updates the photos I see to the ones in the folders I clicked on.
That is unacceptable for a released product to the masses.0 -
My specs are similar to, but not quite as good as the OP. Don't have an SSD for instance. I began using ON1 because I got tired of waiting for Lightroom and for Adobe to make improvements. It seems Adobe finally woke up and are making an earnest effort, but for me, it's too little too late. My computer tends to be more sluggish than most and I'm constantly tweaking things to make it better. I'm thinking of getting an external SSD to put off a new laptop until next year.
I said all that to preface that I am happy with the final release of 2019. My first experience with the beta was that I liked the UI, but everything was very slow, especially layers. I have had very few problems with the final release. I did do a complete uninstall and reinstall to try and solve the preset problem mentioned in another thread.
I am not going to remove 2018 until I've run it through its paces, but as far as I can tell now, I will be sticking with ON1 for the foreseeable future. It could very well be that it is shiny and new and if I had been using it as long as I have LR, I'd feel the same way.

After uninstalling and re-installing, I still have the same issue with the thumbnail view, not as bad, but the issue is still there. Sometimes I can click different folders and it works ok. It seems that if I go into filmstrip view and then back to thumbnail view once or twice it messes up.
ohh well, guess I will wait until at least Dec to install it on my main computer. I still have photos to edit for a client, so I can't risk the consequences of installing beta software.0 -
Wow, so much going on here!
John: There is not a major change, just that the GPU (Not CPU) settings should be checked after installing 2019. For me, I had to redo them, but then I wiped everything On1 and reinstalled to fix a problem. If you want to check, in addition to the Windows settings mentioned above, you can run through this and see if it's set right.
In addition:
- yes, some of the controls have moved. It won't take long to learn where they are. Read the User Guide
- if i understand correctly, On1 saved work that you didn't want. On1 always saves your work, it's automatic, there is no save option. If you want to start over there is a reset option, just right click the photo and reset it.
- not sure why you're searching for .on1 files. If you don't want them, just go into settings and turn them off but then you won't have a backup. They shouldn't be a problem though, On1 makes them as needed and they don't affect your work.
Matt: If you want to wipe On1 to start again, there is a script for that. Just search for uninstall in the search box above.
We all know On1 has speed issues. I have them too. For myself, I can deal with them. The rest of you have to decide for yourself if it really a big problem or not.

Rick, all I meant by my comment about TVs, etc is that if you bought other items that had this many problems, you would take them back. I disagree with them being two completely different animals, almost everything is software driven these days. Smart TVs, Smart Thermostats, Smart Cars, etc... If these are the comments you want to make, go elsewhere please, it's not helpful and just makes me even more irritated. Thanks

I actually deleted my comment, but still disagree. To each his own.

I'm happy it's working good enough for you Rick, but that isn't the case for everyone... That is why I will be sticking with 2018. I'm expressing my opinion here because that is what these forums are for. Whether you agree with me or not I don't care.
What I care about is letting them know this is not an acceptable level of quality for mass distribution and hopefully they care enough to make improvements to their quality in the future before they release software deemed good enough for RTM.0 -
I didn't say on1 was working 'good enough', I just said i can deal with it. And I never disagreed with you I just said your comparison doesn't apply. If you want to discuss THAT, start another thread. I didn't come here to argue.

Thanks for your input Rick.

Just my 2ct's worth. I forgot to change my GPU settings, it was still set to the non-existent 2018. After adding 2019 the difference was simply breathtaking. Clicking on an image it clicked into focus almost immediately. Going to Edit was virtually instantaneous, and this while ON1 was updating the catalogue. Setting the GPU is so important, so don't forget to do it. BTW my video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB.

So after uninstalling a couple times and even using the uninstall script, nothing worked until I changed PR to use the integrated Intel HD GPU in the Nvidia Control Panel. It is way faster with the iGPU instead of the Dedicated 730M GPU. The issue I was having with the thumbnail/filmstrip view appears to be gone as well. This is the opposite of how all the previous versions worked, they were faster with the dedicated GPU.
