Canon CR3 expected support release?
CompletedHello,
Do you have even a rough date of when Canon CR3 RAW files will be fully supported? I upgraded to an EOS R the same week 2019 was released and am a little disappointed I need to revert to Lightroom/PS workflows for now. I'm still using 2019 as a plug-in but loved changing to 2018 as my standard RAW editor, not a bit disappointed to revert for awhile. Thanks!

We've made progress on CR3 and have high hopes it will be coming as early as this summer. In the meantime, as a work a round, you can convert your CR3 files to DNG and they will work with ON1.

I have had a EOS M50 since April but all I do is either convert to DNGs, using the Adobe DNG Converter or TIF using DPP in the meantime. I guess this is a more exacting task to build a RAW converter from scratch as it is a totally new format.
I to am looking forward to the release of full CR3 support. But I suspect we won't get a definitive date

Come on On1 please at least give us clue as to when you may release support for CR3, I am not expecting a definitive date but any comment is better than none. Having just upgraded to 2019 it is very frustrating having to go back to Lightroom.

We're working really hard to bring support for this new exciting format. Unfortunately, Canon has encrypted the format in a way that has not made it easy for our developers to unpack. We do not want to provide a sub-par experience with the conversion so we're waiting until we get it right. Not ideal, but as a work around you can download the Adobe DNG converter (free) and edit the DNG files with ON1.

A converter? Really? In order to be competitive you have to be competitive. There's probably a few Canon owners out there like me - but most of them are smart enough to read about supported cameras before purchasing ON1 Photo RAW 2019 - not me, I bought it not even thinking Canon wouldn't be supported. I was certainly wrong - and not very smart... how did I miss this: "Canon .CR3 (support for these files will be added in a future free update to ON1 Photo RAW 2019)"? Ugh...

I think what you have to realize is it is a big change in format and there are only 2 commercially available products that support CR3 format RAW files. So there must be some difficulty if that is so as I have been waiting 11 months ... waiting that long for native CR3 support. It's coming but you can still use DPP and edit TIFFs or DNGs are another option.

This is still something we're working very hard on trying to resolve. Thanks for your patience.

Does Canon not provide the necessary information to ON1 to decode .CR3 files? I’m wondering why Adobe software can read and use .CR3 files. Is there a licensing fee involved or does Adobe have a special arrangement with Canon? Would it help if owners of newer Canon cameras complained to Canon about not providing ON1 with the information necessary to allow ON1 to modify ON1 Photo RAW be able to process .CR3 files? What am I missing in understanding the problem, and, more importantly, when and if ON1 Photo RAW will be able to process .CR3 files. There were reasons why many of us switched to ON1 from Lightroom. I’d rather not switch back. Is there a reasonable chance that this won’t be necessary?

We do not have any more information about the arrangement between Canon and Adobe. We're still committed to cracking the encryption and bringing CR3 support with or without their help.

Nathan, is it possible that at least we have the DNG processing updated so that it doesn't think that we are using APS-C lenses on a full frame ... this is the effect and I have asked previously for this to be corrected.

Hey Don,
I'm not the expert on this matter, but I have rung your comment up as a ticket and will have one of our tech reps take a look.0 -
There is a ticket I submitted regarding this issue ... request (184185), where the last comment was from March 21 stating "Unfortunately I do not have any further updates from our dev team regarding CR3 Support. "

I just bought a Canon EOS R. I didn't even consider checking if my fully updated On1 2019.2 software would support the raw files coming out of the camera. I took that as granted. How wrong was I...
I see in the feature requests forum that customers have been asking On1 for over a year now to support cr3 files. In the start On1 promised it would come soon. Now I only see "we are working hard on it". Come on! Do you expect to keep your user base of modern Canon camera users? In that case, put everything else aside and fix the cr3 support now. This is your number one feature to implement!

I've been using On1 as a glorified plug-in for Photoshop for now until they support CR3. I've mentally adjusted to many of On1's workflows, and I love it more and more, and even though CR3s can be converted to DNG for the full On1 experience, I regularly shoot 40gb - 100gb+, I don't want to double my storage needs or wait even longer to work on my images because On1 doesn't support the file format just yet. So, it's become a plug-in staple for now, still worth it IMO since I am a Photoshop user first. I am missing out on RAW Develop workflow though, and the insane fast ingestion of my entire import, which is the bummer for me.
I just hope whichever On1 employee pissed off the Canon engineer enough to not be provided the SDK for CR3 images can finally just send them a six pack or nice bundle of flowers so we can all move on happily together =)0 -
Just so everyone is aware there are NO SDK's for demosaicing CR3 images, the Canon SDKs are only for camera control.
Unfortunately the reply from support regarding DNG support is also unacceptable by suggesting turn off Lens Corrections in the Preferences as that turns off LCs for everything. They also acknowledge that they know lens correction profiles are embedded and my question is why that can't be accounted for in DNGs.
In fact offering a Generic LC where lens corrections are disabled would be a reasonable solution as this problem won't go away.

Interesting progress from LibRAW ...

Thanks for sharing, our dev is keeping a close eye on all these announcements and we're still working to bring CR3 support ASAP.

Still nothing in the 2019.5 release...

Usually new camera and lens support is listed in the release notes when the version is released. Here is hoping it will finally arrive or, at least, support for DNG Generator DNGs is improved.

Should not take over a year to support CR3- I am holding off on anymore $$$ to ON1 until they fix the slow processing speeds for high MB raw files and they support CR3. I would love to know who does their programming support??? Is it all inhouse in USA or is it farmed out overseas.? The product is good but it could be much better and faster.

As Nathan wrote above: "...our dev is keeping a close eye on..."
I read that to mean one sorry guy sitting alone trying to figure this out. Maybe it's because English is not my mother tongue. :)

ON1's development is done in house and the new update is free for current 2019 users.

- Big announcement for ON1 P R 2019.5 for Mid May release.
- “It’s Bigger & Better than Ever – ON1 Photo RAW 2019.5 Coming Mid-May”
- Blub indicates new camera support. Why can’t we be told NOW if .CR3 is part of the update? Simple YES or NO would be nice.

Robert,
In the Plus forums Nathan Keudell from On1 made 2 statements regarding CR3 support in 2019.5
"No it will not include support for CR3, but this is still a VERY high priority for us."
and
"We know it is very important and are dedicating resources to bring support as fast as possible. Members of the team are even spending their free time, nights and weekends trying to crack the code. Thanks for bearing with us."

I appreciate the effort that team members are putting into their attempts to crack .CR3 code. At some point, maybe now, ON1 P R needs to consider outsourcing the task to computer science companies or possibly recruiting new computer scientists that would expand the expertise already at ON1 P R. It seems hard to hype a new upgrade (which sounds great) that does not support RAW files from any new camera from one of the major/premiere camera manufacturers for the foreseeable future. It’s been how long since the M50 has been out and a half a yr for the eos R?

I'd like to take advantage of the sale.
I'd like to demo the product first.
I need CR3 support. I have found using Adobe DNG converter and Lightroom that the adjustments are nowhere near as satisfactory as adjusting a CR 2 file. I believe that Adobe DNG does a very poor job of converting those CR3 files.
CR3's have been out for sometime. I am surprised you are so far behind with this. I'd love for someone to alert me to CR3 decoding so I can demo ON1.

There is no time frame for when CR3 support will be implemented. It goes without saying that On1 is working on it and will add it as soon as they can. If there is a sale on now, don't expect CR3 support before it ends.

Thanks for the reply. Truly unfortunate. I am surprised this is not a priority.
