On1 doesn't generate XPM on Export. JPG and PSD files can contain their own metadata and don't need them.

On1 uses XMPs because RAW files can't contain their own metadata and needs them to be compatible with other programs that read them. Copies of the metadata is also contained in the database and .on1 sidecar files.

Most of this is described on page 40 of the user Manual under Embedding Metadata

Thanks Rick, I didn’t word my question right, I understand that on export a “.xmp” fle is not produced.  I should have asked,”when I quit On1 either by clicking om th “x” in the upper left corner of the edited photo or clicking “quit” in the drop down menu, no “.xmp” file is created.  Why is this?

Quitting On1 has nothing to do with XMP's. XMP's are created when you add metadata to a photo.

You can try it yourself. In Explorer, find a photo that doesn't have an XMP. Leave that window open and go to On1. Find the same file and add any metadata to it. Then look back at the explorer window and the file will have an XMP now. if you delete that metadata, the XMP will remain.
