Professional users
Hi All. I earn my living as a photographer and am seriously considering making the switch permanently to On1 Photo Raw. My Adobe subscription was up for renewal so I dumped it and bought Photo Raw 2019. I like what On1 are doing and would rather give my hard earned cash to them rather than Adobe but like others am having issues with 2019 which hopefully will be fixed in the next update.
I just wondered if there are any full time pros out there who made the switch to On1 Photo Raw in one of the earlier releases/versions and have been able to make it work for them and have not felt the need to move back to Adobe. I know likes and dislikes of software are a personal thing but would value any feedback users can give.
I shoot events sometimes and these will often have a short delivery window so speed is important to me. I must admit that despite Lightroom apparently being slow I remedied all my issues with it by upgrading my rig with CPU, RAM and SSDs. It is Adobes subscription model I kind of object to hence why I really want Photo Raw to work for me.
My intention is not to start a heated argument or to pan On1 or Adobe. Just some honest opinions and experiences please. I suppose I just need to know if it is worth my investment in both time and money.
Thanks in advance
Anthony

Hi Anthony, I am a professional to. From the beginning I was an On1 fan. I like the masking brushes, the perfecteraser and in PR 2019 the layer based editing. I am a great fan of Capture One too. In this program I like the color editing, the speed and the many little professional features I miss in On1. And, above all, I like the quality of the raw conversion. And I like that with only a few mouse clicks I have a nearly perfect photo. With On1 I sometimes have the impression of an overload of possibilities in editing pictures.
In the past On1 had lots of bugs in it, as you can see in the forums. Version 2019 seems to work good and reliable, at leasr for me. I have decided for me to give On1 PR another year and then I will make the choice of staying with C1 or make a total switch to On1.

Hi hvierke. Thank you for your feedback. I have downloaded Capture 1 but I don't find the interface as intuitive. Price tag is also quite a bit more. Trying to work through a job in 2019 today and experiencing a lot of lag when using adjustment brush and also sometimes program is unresponsive for several seconds.

hey Anthony, if speed is an issue for you Photo Raw 2019 might not meet your need. If you think it's slow to edit your photos wait 'til you try to export them!
I think it works great if you only edit a couple of photo out of a lot, but if you have a lot of photos that need to be all edited fast and exported to jpegs or tiffs, On1 will disappoint you. YMMV.

Hi Jeff. I am really hoping the next update will fix most of the problems I have or I will be forced to renew my Adobe subscription. I have contacted support and they have extended my money back guarantee into January. I have looked at Capture One, Luminar and Exposure X4 but I find ON1 has the things I need. It is just such a shame it is running so badly. I feel that On1's marketing citing speed and that it can replace Lightroom/Photoshop is a bit over exaggerated. Is it just that it is optimised for Macs and not so much for PC?
Merry Christmas
Anthony

Sorry to say I have asked On1 for a refund. Photo Raw on paper blows the socks off Lightroom but having installed the latest update, 2019.1, I find the program still lags to the point it is unusable if processing more than one photo. I will be grudgingly renewing my Adobe subscription but will check back in a year and try Photo Raw again.
Merry Christmas All.
