Temporary substitute while wating for the "AI" replacement for the "Quick Mask" Tool?
AnsweredCan anyone suggest a temporary solution while we don't have a "Quick Mask" tool? I have a photo of three birds sitting on leafless branches of a tree against a clear blue sky. The birds have a little blue in some of their wing feathers, have a mostly white head & body & shades of brown on most of their wings & back. I previously masked the birds with the Masking Brush (takes me a painfully long time), but with PR causing me plenty of problems, I lost the Mask, even though I had copied it to a further 3 Filters. I don't want to spend that much time again doing it. I'm wondering if using the "Colour Range" option in the Mask would be a good option, or if there's a better way?

This is in the "Effects" module I'm referring to!

Colin, it's a pretty simple thing to just try it and see what you can get. In this example photo I turned on Color Range and used the color picker to select the blown out sky. With the mask turned on, adjusted the Color Range slider until it selected more of what I wanted and less of what I didn't want. You can also play with levels and Window to help fine tune it, but you're still going to have to clean it up.On this one, I still need to paint out the tree and paint in some areas between branches, but compared to doing it all by hand it's much easier.
