ON1 Photo Raw 2019 is not a free product. I was attracted to ON1 with the promise that it could be a replacement for Lightroom. Nor was I informed that problems existed when they took my money.

Since December 2018, I've paid more than a year's worth of subscription's to Lightroom & Photoshop for ON1 Photo Raw 2019 and related products. To date, I have to say that ON1 Photo Raw has been and remains a disappointment.

ON1 seems to be plague with the "If it compiles, ship it" mentality. I certainly wish them well for the future but in the mean time I've put ON1 PR 2019 on hold.

You are right Gerry. They deserve our support, they are honest and committed people. I had two very big problems with 2019 that made it unusable at all. Editing was not saved in sidecar file and the preset were impossible to select. Mine is on a old machine (iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010)) with a lot of software installed. I just formatted the HD (for the first time from 2010), reinstalled OS and PR2019. It's working fine now. Sure, other software was still working fine, but I don't think is realistic to think that they could identification any possible conflict on every single machine. My 2 cents

There are serious performance issues with 2019. My main issue is when trying to work at 100%, everything slows to a crawl with long periods of "Not Responding" only from PhotoRaw. I noted that CPU and GPU are only at about 35% with occasional jumps to 75%, but never reach 100%. Even while Photo Raw is "Frozen", I can use any other application on my PC without issue. I am running an Intel i7 with 16GB Ram and Nvidia 730 Ti with 2GB Dedicated video memory, from an SSD drive. Looking in Resource Monitor there is no indication of heavy resource utilization on Disk, CPU, or Memory.

I edited the same photo with 2018.5.4 and had none of the performance issues. Only 2019.1 is plagued by these unexplained performance issues.

As an IT Professional for 20 years, I know a little bit about troubleshooting and these issues exhibit none of the typical symptoms. I sure hope their developers can crack this one because it makes 2019 unusable for most of what I want to do.

I would agree with the first post if this was a sort of free/donationware app, but I was looking for a replacement for Lightroom and I need a professional app. I cannot rely on ON1 for my work. I feel I should not have trusted the developers' promises and should have spent my money differently

    Jerry,

    No.

I committed my workflow to On1 in December of 2017. Since then it has been one issue after another. 2018, 2018.5, 2019, and 2019.1.

Cataloging has never worked. And I think most agree it is a corrupt file problem. Fine. But what does On1 do when if finds a corrupted file? It let's you know, by crashing. So I don't catalog, even though I want to.

Masking slow? Why yes. Especially when zoomed in.

    Crashes, oh we have them.

Here is the deal. I've spent a lot of money, and even more time, with this software. My system is up to date, and fast. EVERY OTHER PROGRAM OF THIS TYPE RUNS WITHOUT ANY, NOT ANY, ISSUES.

I've tried every change, update, adjustment, tweak, whatever was offered, and so I thought it was fixed after I corrected the windows update issue. And after that, it was running fine for two days. Still not cataloging, still painfully slow masking brushes, but it was working.

Today, after hours of work, including a very detailed mask, it crashed on export. BOOM!
All the work is gone, the mask, the edits, all of it. So yes, I am upset with the hard working staff.

Jerry, I want to use this software, I like this software, I am even willing to be a little more patient. But, someone at On1 needs step up, acknowledge there is a problem, and tell us what they are doing about it.

    Regards,

    Bob

" but I really think we should take it easy for a while with the bugs and complaints"

Sorry to be blunt, but my clients will not take this as an excuse

Strange, I have minor issues but nothing serious and I have 30,000+ images on a external USB drive in the catalog and another 30,000+ images on a local SSD being occasionally in use.

I have a PC just a little more than standard but I have 2 x SSDs, but I only run Windows 10 OS software, no external AntiVirus, no Utilities or extras running in the background and I have allocated the same amount of virtual memory as is RAM:

Win 10 x64 System with Intuos Pen & Touch
    Sys : Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), 16GB RAM
GPU 1: Intel HD Graphics 630, OpenGL v4.5
    GPU 2: NVIDIA GT 1050, 4GB, OpenGL v4.6, OpenCL v1.2

Gerry, I was curious as to why you made this post. Do you know something the rest of us don't? There are no preceding posts complaining about the product. I know that I am not privy to how many complaints On1 is getting or how many hours a day they work on these issues. All I know is that I have been plagued with issues on both of my Macbook's. One is brand new! I submit service requests and then wait and wait. Then I will receive a standard email asking for information, which I have already provided. I have countless hours of work and time I will never get back.

I check the On1 user forums frequently to aid in resolving my issues and I see very few complaints. I made a post a while back about erased sidecar files and several of the replies, with similar issues, where deleted. I know they were posted because I received an email notification with the post. There are very few questions or complaints in the user forums. That seems suspicious.

So, Gerry, how do you know they are having all of these problems? No real indication of that on the forums. How do you know how many hours they work? How do you know how many programmers they have? Why should I have to wait for On1 to fulfill a promise they made when I purchased their products? Dare I ask...Do you work for On1 or are you just hoping to get favored by tech support to get your issue resolved? :-)

I think there have been quite a few posts discussing problems with ON1.   I submitted a ticket with a masking problem, submitted the files etc. which was acknowledged.   But I don't know if and when the problem will be resolved.

I know they're trying to sell a product, but what I particularly dislike is the way that anything negative is quickly removed and brushed under the carpet.

What I think ON1 SHOULD do is produce a list of known issues and what they're doing to correct them.

I so hope this program comes good.

Lance, are you for real? "I see very few complaints"? I am not sure what forums you check, but I see tons of complaints/bug reports. And no, I am not looking for preferential treatment, I would just like to cut the ON1 team a little slack. I have been in IT development for more than 45 years (now retired), and I know how the pressure/panic builds up and mistakes are made. Just easing up the pressure a bit would give them a chance to get a better product out, and that's what we all want isn't it? My 2cts.

For those waiting for an update:

Just FYI, there should be a new version out soon. I understand that it will have the new AI masking tool and some fixes, but don't know which fixes have been addressed.

No release date has been announced, these are just 'hints' that have been mentioned in other forums.

    My thoughts on this...

Support has been great but they are sometimes unknowing why the program does what it does. I have had a masking problem when using luminosity masks and brushes and they really couldn't figure it out. Windows update 1809 fixed the problem.

Personally I would like to see updates where problems are fixed vs new features. It has been a request of mine since the launch of RAW 2017. I feel they are under the gun to get features out there because Topaz, Skylum and others are popping out software with new features left and right. I have an old computer and have few problems but have been told by other users my computer is the problem ... not when an new I7 processor can't handle the program. I am hopeful that one update will be the aha moment where all works OK.

It seems like a lot of users aren't using this forum and on the ON1 FB page issues will get deleted (I call it the Stepford Wives solution) - make sure any negativity is not seen by potential clients. Luckily we have here to try and help each other.

That was fast. Photo Raw 2019.2 is ready for download.

I was, of course, hoping that .2 would improve the brush lag issue.

But sadly, it was not to be.

2019.2 seems to have totally fixed the masking brush lag issue for me.

Not for me. Using the clone stamp. After 4-5 uses, program slows to a crawl and becomes unusable Couldn't finish the first edit. Sorry, but I'm out again. Let me know when .3 is ready. Thanks

Edit: Export took several minutes, but that could be because whatever was going on with the clone brush. Sorry, but this is still not a usable piece of software for me.

Edit 2: Actually export never finished under Edit module. Had to go to Browse module. Export worked, but program never recovered; had to break out from task manager.

Darryl, Cloning works great for me. It's also the only time I see the GPU jump to 50%. Do I have to ask if your GPU is set right?

Export always takes a while. I would expect it to.

  • Darryl Brooks

I'll have to check the GPU. I had it set up at one point, but I haven't used the software since .1 first came out. When I checked task manager waiting for the cloning to settle down, the GPU did spike up and down.

Per their site, Export is supposed to be much faster.

I will test again tomorrow after checking GPU

ON1 just crashed downloading the new version.

    I love this app

Christian, Personally I never upgrade On1 through the On1 application itself. I always download the install executable and save it to a folder and install from there. I always add the On1 version number to the file name when I save it. This allows me the opportunity to go back versions if I needed too ( which I have not ) but does allow for easy re-installs etc.

Current downloadable install executable can be found here. ( You may want to bookmark )

After changing the GPU setting back, I am getting the must have Open GL 3.3 error. I checked and I have Open GL v 4.5. 2018 and 2019.1 ran fine. I am downloading the newest driver even though mine was only a couple of weeks old.

OK, after updating the driver and rebooting, I got it to start. I suspect it may have been the restart rather than the update, but either way. I'll test the program again tomorrow.

Okay, finally had time to get back in and have a look. Didn't use any brushes this time, just a quick preset and some adjustments. It worked fine, no better or worse than 2018. All was fine as expected. Did a quick export to jpg. Closed it down and went to LR to compare it to some other edits I had done and.... all edits were gone. I had a jpg of the original raw. There were no adjustments in LR before opening in ON1. Could have been a fluke, but I think I'm going to have to wait until the next one.

FYI, I did receive email from one of my other posts from tech support saying that there were still known issues and they were working on it.

Tried one more. Wanted to see AI Mask. Like before, it dragged to a crawl before I finished, but I got it almost done before it froze. Worked fairly well. Flatted image and did an export. This time it did export, but the image I got was nowhere near what I exported. It looked like the exposure slider was pushed all the way left.
