Starting to feel like RAW 2017 again ...

    The masking functions is not usable when zoomed in.  It was fixed in the late versions of 2018.  But the 2019.2 is feeling like early 2018 version again...  too slow and lag when making a masking zoomed in.

    Same for me, masking at 100% is slow and freeze to make erratic masking and make me wrong lines of masking. I have 16gb ram and i suspect i need 32gb to go stable because my cpu is 8 core 4.3ghz and GPU 4GB is enough for working.

    If you have only 8 GB it is too low for work with ON1 (i send a ticket and ask a question on buy more ram and i wait the response and also a fixed stable version for all)

    There should be no need for more ram, if you look on Task Manager you'll probably see your CPU getting to 100% which causes the computer to freeze. I think 2019.2 has memory leaks as I saw over 8 Gb of memory being used on a single layered photo. Giving RAW more memory to use will probably not lead to better performance. If an 8 core 4.3 GHz CPU can't do the job I don't know what will!

    It's not the RAM or the CPU.

    I have a 16 core CPU with 32GB of RAM, with PCIe SSD and GTX1080Ti GPU.  The software still does the same thing, unusable in masking when zoomed in at any level.

    Both CPU and GPU usage were not even at 50%, but the software just isn't usable when masking zoomed in.

    Your computer is obviously more high end than mine so if yours can't run the program it is the program and not the computer. I really wish they'd just fix the problems before moving on to a new platform or features. As I said in my first post I was worried and rightfully so that this new platform would be problematic just like when RAW 2017 was launched - it was unusable for me. I am envisioning that it won't be until late 2020 that these issues will finally be fixed and then do they move onto the next platform? I wasn't going to upgrade from 2018 but I am giving a workshop in June on On1 so I wanted to have the new platform.

    We shouldn't have to buy a super computer to edit photos. Yours is closer to one than mine:) and it still doesn't run properly - go figure!

    It's definitely the software...

    Back in 2018, the early version was doing the same thing.  I contacted support, but they never fully answered my question on CPU and GPU usage (probably because they already knew the problem but did not want to publicly admit it).  Then the toward the end of 2018, the late updates actually improved it quite a bit, not great, but it was usable.

    So, with this new version, 2019.2, the same problem returned.

    This latest version works ok when the photo is in "fit" mode, but a lot of the time, you need to zoom in to do a better masking job.  Once the photo is zoomed in at 100, 50, or 25 percent, the software just LAGS....  cannot even use it.

    It seems slightly better if I develop a 12MP RAW file from my D700, but I now use a 36MP D810, and the software just can't keep up...  So I suspect the problem is also related to the resolution of a file.

    I thought it was my old computer's issue (a legacy i7 processor with 16GB of RAM).  So, I actually upgraded and built this new system to run this software (AMD 1950x 16 cores, 32 threads, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, PCIe SSD, GTX1080Ti).  Thinking that it will help with the situation by brute forcing the software with great hardware, but I was very disappointed...

    You definitely went the correct way as far as processors and GPU. I specifically asked the support staff if they use all the cores on the CPU and they said yes; having an AMD Threadripper with all that memory should have done the job. I expect my computer to run slower than a modern computer and if the file became too big to crash the computer but obviously something in the program is not right. I was planning on a computer upgrade next year to help with the speed but wasn't planning on a monster like you have ... hopefully they straighten this out and you can enjoy the benefits of having the computer you have!

    There is absolutely no reason any commercial software should act like ON1 does. None. I have never used any Adobe photo editing software, but I would be willing to bet that their performance runs circles around ON1.

    When troubleshooting the catalog issues I have had since 2019 came out, I set some CPU affinity parameters on ON1 so that it would not use all of the cores. My windows 10 machine was suffering big time, even the mouse and clock and monitors were locking up (and still do with 2019.2, but just not nearly as bad). Limiting ON1 to only some of the cores did nothing to help. So that pointed me to disk I/O and that is still where I believe the biggest problems are in 2019. The NDservice directory is being written too and read from at alarming rates, even without catalogs enables, and even worse with them enabled. 

    The problem is not something that I feel I can submit a useful software bug ticket on and I can only hope that ON1 is seeing this on their own computers and working on it.

    Kevin, since you mentioned process Hacker a while ago, I've been monitoring disk access and filtering for On1, and seeing the same as you. You can save that entire list of open files (I have about 550 showing open right now) and send it to On1 as an example. i was considering doing that myself.

    Mmmm.  Just about to purchase but noticed some lagging when I was mucking around trialing the program.  So came her to look if there was any info on speed and performance.  Looks like I'd better hold of spending my $.

    Agreed.

    Almost everyone posting trouble has decent hardware. I have decent hardware. It's not the hardware.

    None of the other photo or video software I've used acts like this. Not PS CS3, PS Elements, or LR6, not Exposure 4, DxO, or Affinity Pro. I already posted in the other forum that I was done with the hassle and wasted time, (probably closed  by now).

    I just hope someone at On1 is actually watching their forums, and responds with something more than usual "put in a support ticket" nonsense.

    Roberta, if you like On1 and you're having problems with it you should put in a support ticket. It will supply more data to help isolate the problems, the more info they have, the better.

    I submitted a ticket, but I got a very generic answer...

    The response was that they are aware of "some" issues with the mask tool.  And they wanted me to uninstall, clean registry, and other stuff that I know wouldn't help.

    They also gave me a temporary "work around", which is to reduce the size of the window while doing masking.  So, this is an interesting thing, meaning that the issue is somehow resolution related...  I haven't tried this yet, but what is the point?  I use a 4K monitor, and there is a reason why I got this 4K monitor.  I want to use all of its resolution.

    And yes, none of my other software runs horribly like this during zoomed in masking.  All the Adobe stuff runs as smooth as butter.  And I also use this my machine to edit 1080 and 4K video with pretty good results.

    Nope, if it goes the way 2017 went it'll be next year before they work most or all of the kinks out. It can be a great program, I like it more than any other out there but it's not fun when you try and mask or do something and the program doesn't respond. I bought 2019, I am hoping that they straighten it out before 2020 comes out but if not I'll revert back to 2018 and use that ... I'm pretty sure other than cataloging it worked great.

    My PC has i5 8600k CPU with 32G RAM and Nvidia Quadro P1000 gpu and seems not to have problem with mask when zooming at 100%. To speed up the rendering I usually hide the left hand pane (I noted slower rendering when the preset tab is displayed). I hope this can work also on your PC

    What you said is a known work around that was suggested by On1's support.  Please see my comment above.  Again, this is a work around, not what it should be.  Also, the amount of the pixels of the RAW file seems to have an effect on this as well.

    My sentiments exactly. I love the program and don't want to start looking and learning something new. Photoshop and Lightroom work perfectly but the delays and crashes in 2019.2 have made it unusable.
    I'm using two different laptops and the problems are the same. I'm convinced that PR has not been designed for Windows. Americans seem to love apples. Must be in the genes.

    I love the program as well, but I am beginning to look for something else since they have NOT fixed the issue so far.  It does appear that the Mac version runs well since that is all they used to do the demo videos.

    I hate Apple products, software, computer, etc.  But it looks like they are getting the love, not us Windows users.

    I also have Skylum.  They are coming out with the program as a plug in to Photoshop.  I may have to go that route if On1 doesn't fix this program.
