ON1 Version 2019.2 Your Observations Please
Hello,
Still recovering from the issues that plagued 2019, 2019.1. I have uninstalled 2019.1 because it was basically unusable and reinstalled 2019 so I would not lose some of my edits. In 2019 I still see high CPU usage with 8 cores banging away especially when using the Adjustment Brush along with other issues that have all been mentioned in this forum. I would like to ask those willing and who install ON1 2019.2 to list some of their observations before I even think about installing. Hope that this company has worked out all these problems. Thank you.

I was having a ton of issues. This latest version solved most of my concerns and seems really fast now. None of the usual slowdowns or freezes. Blown away and much happier.

I would generally agree that the .2 update has really addressed some of my performance issues but I haven't had a chance to test a lot of the new functionality yet. I don't use catalogs which still seem to be the subject of debate in this latest update.

I am also now seeing much improvement with the new update. My issues of losing edits seem to have disappeared for now. I processed three large D850 raw files and had no issues. I did both local adjustments, and added several effects for HDR, Dynamic Contrast, color enhancer and the Big Softy filter with no issues, there is still a little lag going from develop back to browse. I am much happier now. I have not tried the export feature yet.

so far 2019.2 is looking more stable. the cataloging seems to be chugging away in the background.
scrolling thru the catalog is fast and edits are fast. i have not tested more intensive tasks like masks, etc.
but looking much better

I didn't have issues with 2019.1 - didn't use catalogue - However witn 2019.2 I do notice a slight improvement wrt responsiviness.

The latest version doesn’t crash as much but I have thrown in the towel using it as just so unresponsive. Sadly I’m going to have to go back to lightroom even after buying the on1 raw software. I love on1 workflow but even switching between layers is painful. If I edit Jpgs it works brilliantly but with raws it’s just not usuable for me.

Craig

So has anyone had to upgrade graphics card drivers or configure special graphics card settings to work with ON1?
0 -
Charles, I get Nvidia updates all the time (well, every month or two) you should always keep that up to date. As far a card settings, yes there are things that you should check.
0 -
Charles,
My procedure is to check for updates daily; graphic card settings were not affected when I upgraded On1.

Hi, Rick Appreciate the suggestion, I totally understand and have done the updates on my AMD graphics card faithfully for years. The last graphics update failed for me causing me more problems The strange thing is that all other programs I use on a regular basis work fine with my current drivers that include Photoshop, Lightroom, Vegas Pro, and high-end games to mention a few. Are you getting better results this go around? I hoping I can get on the latest version. Thanks

I should have mentioned, I'm going to try setting up my AMD graphics setting per that link you suggested seeing what happens

I've been with PR since it's conception and it's been a very rocky road at times. But, I stuck with it because I could see the potential and because the thinking behind the software had an affinity with my brain. I'm absolutely delighted with 2019.2 and the new AI masking. I've got my C: drive with OS, programmes and images all together on a M2 PCI drive and the performance is just like watching an On1 tutorial video. I now feel that I have endless possibilities to edit my images, only limited by my imagination.

2019.2 still excessively and constant writes/rewrites the database file in the NDService folder. It does this forever. Even while editing. I know On1 has received special detailed log files documenting/during occurrences like this. Pathetic.
My test case is one folder I catalog. It has about 200 photos. Once that folder is viewed in the browser the constant writing to NDService start happening and never stops even if I leave the cataloged folder. The NDService folder has 46MB of files. On1 is writing 3.5MB per second to the files in that folder. Yes, per second. No image files from the folder are being read. That only occurs on the initial creation of the catalog folder.

Updated (2 days later). Speed is now better. Both generally, as well as the AI masking. I upgraded my AVAST Antivirus and I added On1 Sandbox to the NVIDIA GPU settings, and now 2019.2 is slightly faster than 2019.1....and I'm happy, since 2019.2 is more stable than 2019.1.
However, I would love to be able to have the Browse Gridview on one screen and the Edit Photo on the other screen. If I then also could be able to save Filtering presets, I would be SOOO pleased. /Magnus
Hi,
I just upgrade from 2019.1. The upgrade was quick and smooth (remove all old versions, having my AVAST antivirus activated). However, my application-specific video settings needed of course to be re-applied (NVIDIA).
After playing around in Browse and Edit, jumping back and forth, I so far must say, I see little (if any) performance improvement as advertised. I would even go as far as saying 2019.2 is actually slower. In Edit+filmstrip mode, clicking a picture, it takes roughly 3-8 seconds before the little RED loading indicator disappears and you can start editing!!
In Browse, also moving via filmstrip, it's equally slow, if not slower (when applying 3-4 filters and 0-2 Local adjustments per photo). Not edited pictures seem to load faster. I have RAW Previews set to Accurate.
AI mask tool works very well. However, the two pictures I tried the AI mask tool on, both seemed to hang. ON1 showed the 'Building AI mask' Progress bar at 50% for 3-4min (CPU<16%, GPU < 1%, disk=0MB/s, and memory at 4GB), but did an excellent job though. Nowhere close as fast as illustrated in the ON1 promotion videos:-( Why so low CPU usage? I have no other programs running either.
During this initial session I've tried a lot of masking, local adjustments, perfect Eresar, and 10+ filters, all with acceptable responsiveness, so except for the very slow loading of photos, 2019.2 seems to work fine. I also like that (at least) one of my submitted trouble tickets have been fixed, e.g. filtering on 0 stars
So my only trouble now is the very SLOW LOADING of photos (in Photo view and in Filmstrip view). After culling and developing some 100 photos, 2019.2 is definitely way slower than 19.1. I'm kind of surprised given the HW I now have...
I wonder if anyone could tell me their loading times and the corresponding raw file size? I do believe I will have to start some trouble shooting on my rig, because there seems to be something wrong somewhere...everyone else is reporting improved responsiveness.
My config:
Win10 build 17134, I7-6700K@4.2GHz, 16GB, 2 DELL U2713HM @ 2560*1440, GTX 1080Ti, 3 separate SSD disks for application, scratch, and photos. Wacom Intuos Pro M, AVAST antivirus with ON1 paths removed, 1 Cataloged Folder with 150 000pics in 500 subfolders on a trad HD, now shooting Sony A7R2 compressed RAW @ 42MB/file0 -
@Norman Black,
I removed the catalog folder because I was seeing something similar to you. I will add that even with the catalog removed, 2019.2 continues to write something in that NDService folder, but only when it starts up. Or at least, that is what I saw. It is quick about it too.

Thanks, Peter Pfeiffer appreciate it still waiting this out!

@Kevin Pinkerton
There is always some writing to NDservice at app startup. On1 keeps three backups of the NDService folder contents so on start they delete the oldest folder and rename the other folders and create a new "core" folder and copy/update the DB files in the NDService\core folder.

I bought a new gpu and see improvement now. however the 2019.2 has another bug: in portrait mode when I click on the corner of mouth or eye the cursor becomes a brusch and no editing of the mouth is possible.

Well, I have finally updated my AMD graphics driver and Radeon software to the latest version. I installed 2019.2 no issues there I still have 2018 installed. Configured my ON1 and those 2 other ON1 programs sandbox and capture to use the GPU. Fired 2019.2 browse loaded quickly while I was watching my CPU usage up to 22%, After the CPU settled down to 3% switched back and forth between browse and edit and effects with a rise up to around 22% then back down again. Memory usage at around 9gb. Zoomed in and out on an edited image no crashing like in 2019.1. Could this be a good sign? I think the real test will be when I'm actively editing an image and using the adjustment brush. To be continued. One thing, closing down 2019.2 was very interesting I have never seen this before. A small dialogue box came displaying this message closing metadata extractor and then closing the database. This process seemed to take some time. Has anyone seen this?

Seem to be having issues with .2 reverted back to .1.

@Vinny. What issues are you having with 2019.2? Please share Thanks

Charles,
Most of us are having issues with the cataloging using too many resources but that has been the problem for quite a long time and I can live with that as I don't use it as others do. But this process uses a lot of CPU power that could be used to either process the photo or multitask.
But things that are going on are: seems to have memory leaks, uses too much CPU, too much GPU, crashes sometimes, when I copy a mask it needs to "render" it and I did a photo, used a preset and a masked local adjustment then decided to flip the image and everything went away. I could understand the local adjustment maybe not going with the flipped photo but the preset should have stayed.
Memory leaks - I have had at least 2 photos that have used a lot of memory, over 8 Gb.CPU and GPU - It can use a lot of both but usually it will be a blip up and then come down, today it pegged both at 100% and stayed there until it crashed.
Crashes - self explanatory but shouldn't crash when doing a single photo. If it were a multiple layered project - OK. I once did a 2 Gb photo project in 2018 and it crashed - I understood that.
Copy mask - it now comes up with a box "rendering" where I never saw that before. I was able to just copy and paste.
And what happened today with the photo - I would imagine that a preset should stay since it wasn't masked onto the object it was part of the whole photo.
So with the above said I am running an 8 YO computer with Windows 10 PRO latest update, I5-760 processor, 16 Gb ram and a Nvidia GT730 video card with 2 Gb memory. All of my components are in the recommended range. I expect my computer to be slower than the latest. People in the past have pointed to the age of my computer BUT when you have people coming on with new I7 computers having the issue I can't say it is my computer.0 -
Hi Vinny, Appreciate your information. Seems I had more problems with 2019.1 it was just unusable for me. I worked with 2019.2 yesterday and today. I noticed that I had some memory and lagging issues with a few images mouse getting stuck and not moving for a few seconds, it got pretty bad but never crashed. Overall I'm really not seen any gigantic differences in speed as compared with 2019. My AMD FX8350 4.0gig 8 core CPU, 16gb ram R280 AMD 3 gig graphics overclocked with ddr5 of ram. My CPU has not been buried as in 2019.1. I am also not working with a new system like you. My system is more than a few years old. If we can't run this program with our specs than I just don't know what to say!

Based on the experience from multiple non-Adobe tools, my experience suggest the difference between 2019.1 and 2019.2 is moving from C+ to a B-.
Specifically:
v2019.1: DAM: C-; Workflow: B+; Efficiency/Performance: C-; Interoperability: C; Features: B-, Export: C
v2019.2: DAM: C-; Workflow: B+; Efficiency/Performance: B-; Interoperability: C; Features: B, Export: C
[These values are relative to other Win10 tools]The good: Improvements in background cataloging; February addition of the December promise of a AI masking, retains a reasonable workflow when inside the tool, less dependent on "special" GPU settings.
Missing: File move, database maintenance tools, back up tools, fast cataloging, cataloging status report, search for files by extension takes 4 clicks, multiple filer levels, grouped sorting, interoperability with other tools; doesn't play nice with antivirus software (still need directory/file exclusions), ability to edit "send to" menu, frequency separation
Waiting for improvements: Reduced clicking searching, file sorting, correct "launch from external application experience, noise reduction; still takes more CPU cycles than competitive tools; to many dialog boxes demand to be in front of all applications, XMP/IPTC metadata handling (horrible), FWIW; forums report more bugs than I see
Removed: Ability to export in the background from Edit mode.

I'm seeing just a creep up in performance but as soon as I get into the real editing process it starts acting up again. Also, those freaking scrollbars are ridiculous they so small basically unusable. Are you kidding me with those things?
A few wish items are a history list rollback as offered in Lightroom and the option to save a history state while editing. Thats other than the versions method. Also, the camera drone support for luts and profiles is non-existent for both DJI and Yuneec. I use these camera drones on a regular basis. Lightroom has profiles for both the Inspire series and the Typhoon series.

The scroll bars are ridiculous. They are so tiny and impossible to grab. I thought I was the only one having issues. Not only the scroll bars, but the resizing bars (for dragging the left or right panels). Way, way to small.
I have removed the catalogs as PR 2019.2 kept going back and beating on the NDService directory just about anytime I left a directory and went back in, or just hopped around from one directory to another in the catalog. In my mind, THAT file access issue is severe.

Nope, I fight with those scrollbars and the resizing bars all the time.

What's really sad and it is starting to affect how I look at the ON1 FB page, is it's starting to feel like the 'Stepford Wife' page. Everything is good and dandy and if something is off a little we will correct it or remove it. If I post there or even posting here there doesn't seem to be any presence of acknowledgement that the program has significant issues. Yes, they put out "we know there are some glitches" but how about fixing all the problems. I doubt anyone in ON1 looks at all the complaints that are being generated and say to themselves "We really have some issues to contend with and lets get these solved". But Marketing will be putting out blurbs in a short while about RAW 2020! I have had DXO and Affinity Photo for a few years now and just recently I paid for the DXO Photolab upgrade and they gave me Photolab 2 that was released not long after I upgraded. Affinity has been through a few updates which aren't a steady thing but have announced version 1.7 is coming out soon and I think it too will be free.
I am now receiving canned responses from the technical staff. Heck I've given them my computer specs enough times that when they see my name my computer profile should pop up! So that is telling me they are sending out crap to "satisfy" their users ... canned responses annoy me! Originally back in RAW 2017 it was pointed out that it may be a Windows thing because there are so many variations of hardware but Apples are having issues and every other piece of software runs mostly fine 99.9% of the time.
Gus - I believe I remember your name from the ACDSee Forum - have you given them up? When RAW 2017 came out it was so bad on my computer I tried almost all the other software and hit their forums. I stopped looking as I found nothing is quite as good IMO as RAW based on ease of use and workflow in editing a photo but I do not use any feature that RAW has in managing photos. The closest thing I found to RAW for me was Alien Skin but it really was missing some stuff that I use in editing photos in ON1. If RAW 2019 worked as intended based on your scoring it would be mostly A's from me, some portions are A's with an asterisk that when it glitches it is a D. DAM = F - I can't use it as all it does is run and run while using computer resources. I have yet to start using the DAM for what it can do.0 -
Agreed, I guess there is no ON1 presence here or forum monitor, Received a survey this week via email from ON! so I spent some time completing it.

On1 is working on getting a moderator for these forums, but it won't be an On1 employee, so still no real connection to the company.
