Masking Brush Lag

I have had the same problem since last July.

ON1 19 s a nice DAM and RAW processor but any serious detailed masking work is impractical.

Perhaps I should spend a few thousand dollars on a new computer just so I can use this software;)

I have seen some improvement after updating to Mohave and switching from a platter HD to an SSD.

Be sure to submit a support ticket with an image file, sidecar and system report so they can review as many of these brush lag issues as possible.

Why buy a new computer, the masking works just finer in Lr and Ps and indeed Affinity :-) Think my involvement in the ON1 project is now officially over. So many others have reported the masking issue but ON1 would rather play with this so called AI stuff.

My suggestion to myself to buy a new computer was purely facetious.

Even the awful Luminar 3 does not have this brush issue.

    I know Tom :-)

What you say about Luminar is true but then its masking is pretty basic anyway. I have been looking around for a while now just to see if Lr can be replaced and I have decided no. It was a close call with DxO PhotoLab, especially when linked to Nik but Lr and Nik do just as well and I know Lr - DxO is a bit geeky to me but I love the control points, although even that is old tech now.

Have you guy's submitted support tickets? I did have masking brush lags etc on previous versions but 2019.2 seems to have fixed them for me. I just did some AI masking then perfect brush masking on this image zoomed in to 100% ( zoomed was where I previously had serious issues. ) Masked out dynamic contrast on a filter as well and had no issues. It's not a great photo but was testing masking with layers and filters because of my previous issues.

I'm running an older I5-4690 CPU Win 10 w24 GB Ram.

I didn't think it was possible but now that I have been using it, .2 seems even slower than .1.

In what way, Tom? I have the laggy masking brushes but everything else seems reasonably snappy. I admit I do  not use layers that often though.

I don't even bother with layers because they are just unusable in any realistic way.

If I open an unedited file at 100% panning is jerky and panning with the navigator is worse.

It's so strange that symptoms are different between users. I just did this 7 layer project on my 10yo PC with 8gb memory. It was slow when merging layers, saving and exporting, but I had no real problems switching layers, adding filters or masking.

There were a few times that I had to wait for virtual memory to be swapped, but that's to be expected.

While I do see some problems, it seems to me that I have less problems than many others do. Or maybe I'm less critical and more patient? I don't know.

I agree that the brush sticks too much at 100% though.

That is so true, Rick. Since 2019.2 things are better here but not the masking brushes. On the other hand I have not seen other problems that are reported on here. Strange!

Well 8 days into 2019.2 and must say I am impressed. It is very snappy on my iMac and I have had no issues other than the masking brush sort of drifting behind the mouse movement - if you get what I mean. Masking works well enough but it is hard to control the brush!

    Yes, that is the issue.

Impossible to get detailed brush work accomplished with the brush dragging behind the cursor.

Wonder why they don't fix it? It has been around for ages :-(

I would guess the number of users with this issue is relatively small and if they eventually fall by the wayside, then so much the better for on1.

Brush lag even worse with .6

Tom, can you give details? 1 photo? Layers? Local adj? multiple effects?

I'm trying the brushes and not seeing a problem (yet)

Have you adjusted the Performance slider in Preferences > System?

It's an old issue. I have done all the troubleshooting suggestions.

I only use on1 for an occasional keyword search.

But I always check the latest update just out of curiosity.

Now that it's time to sell an upgrade ON1 admits to the brush lag issue.

The brush lag has been evident in many Webinars, it's not like it was a secret. The video is showing a known worst-case scenario for comparison. Some people, but not everyone has lag that bad. Even my old PC isn't as bad as that.

Well, I guess I had the worst-case scenario.

    I just think it is ironic/sad that for users like me, they are telling us that;

You know that brush lag problem you have that has made the software mostly unusable, if you pay more we will fix it.

Oh, and thanks for taking the time to send all the screen recordings and logs that helped us remove the issue.
