No 14-bit raw support for some Nikon cameras
Well I had such high hopes for a long relationship with ON1 Photo Raw but after the latest response from support about 14 bit .NEF files, we may be headed for a divorce. Over 6 months ago I submitted a ticket because Photo RAW was using the Tier 2 RAW engine for all my 14-bit (compressed and uncompressed) images which means no ON1 or camera profiles, very high CPU/RAM use when browsing or editing and terrible control of highlights and shadows. I hadn't heard anything for several months so I sent another email to support asking if the issue was fixed in the new version said to be released next month.
The first reply I got back stated that the bug had been fixed in version 2019.2 but I knew that it hadn't so I asked them to confirm that it was fixed. The second response said that "we do not support the 14-bit RAW files that some Nikon cameras can shoot in" followed by "We do not have any current plans to change this functionality." If they had told me this 6 months ago I might not have wasted my money buying PR2019 , knowing that they had no intention of providing support for my camera (D610). I wonder how hard it can be to actually open/edit these 14-bit raw files - there are lots of other editors out there that have no issues with them. It's frustrating that they claim to have tier 1 support for the vast majority of Nikon cameras but fail to mention that not all file formats are actually supported.
Alright, that's my rant. Getting down off my soapbox now. If anyone else has been suffering with the same issue, I'd love to hear from you. Maybe if there's enough of us we can put some pressure on to get it fixed. I'll give next months update a try - maybe support got it wrong and it'll be fixed. If not, there's always Luminar or - god forbid - Adobe.

I own a D500 and have NEF (RAW) bit depth 14-bit and NEF (RAW) compression on and haven't noticed problems as you describe. How can you categorically tell it is using the tier 2 raw engine?

If ON1 drops to Tier 2 raw engine you don't get the drop down menu for selecting camera profiles (neutral, portrait, etc.) - that's the definitive way. CPU and RAM usage climbs very high also (90%+ CPU, 10gb+ ram)

Not all models have this limitation which is the strange thing. I wouldn't have thought Nikon would change their .nef format so much that it would be an issue for certain models.

If I open a folder which contains photographs taken with my D500 with the settings I specified above I can see in edit mode the Camera Profile menu and I can select from a number of choices like ON1 standard, portrait, landscape etc.

Good to know that the D500 doesn't have this issue as I am thinking of upgrading my D300s to a D500.

I have the same issue with the D600 files, but not with my old D300 or the D800. A very strange situation11
