dual mode how
I do not have a clue how to set up dual mode.
-
Go to Window > Dual Menu > Show. On my laptop with the window expanded to fill the screen the browser window opened over my edit window and I have to switch between them. I could resize to show both simultaneously if wanted.

Dual mode seem of very limited value. (Intentionally) easy to confuse this with "dual monitor support", which would separate editing panels (on one monitor) from the image being edited (on a second monitor).
Still a ways to go before this feature is of any value (IMHO)

I believe the whole reason for adding dual mode was to be used with a second monitor. I don't have one to test with (I guess I could use my TV for testing) but I see no reason why I would not be able to move either of the windows to a second monitor.

The primary value of a two monitor setup is to use one monitor for the editing menus and the second monitor for a full-screen view of the edited image. The newly released Pr2019.5 is still a far distance from this.

You realize the amount of work involved in totally rewriting the user interface to allow that? Not something that can be done in a point update.

When I first saw "Dual Mode" advertised as a part of 2019.5 I thought (along with many others) that On1 had implemented (full) dual monitor support which would allow editing menus and controls to be seen on one monitor and the results of the edit (a full-screen of the image) to be see on the second monitor. Several high-end image editors provide this. A really great feature.
Now that 2019.5 has been released I see that On1 interprets "Dual Mode" as only a separation of the Browse and Edit modules. Not a big deal for me since I've always been able to view a grid of thumbs in Browse, double-click on a selection, and see this in full screen.
Perhaps On1's "Dual Mode" is a bit less cumbersome in sales presentations, but as far as editing goes it's strictly "ho-hum". Hardly justifies the effort and expense of installing a second monitor.
Hoping that this is just the first step in an expanded dual monitor implementation.

100% Agree with Gerald Pasternack!!
And on my machine the previews don't update on the "browse" screen if only one file is shown and when there are two files shown it does update but with a few seconds of delay ... so there are still some technical kinks to get worked out.

Dual monitor does not work at all in the new 2020 version, it just plonks what would have been on the second monitor in 2019 in place of the screen you were looking at, so you just get a switched view on the monitor it was already using. Glad I didn't buy it.

Dual mode works just fine. The first time it is opened the new window will open on the primary display but it is easily dragged to the 2nd monitor. After that its position is remembered between new launches of the program and when toggling dual mode off then back on again.
You can also drag the edit view to the other monitor leaving the thumbnail view in place. The program is not going to know which monitor a user will want which view to be placed on so this seems right to me.

Thanks Brian, got it working. I'm sorry I don't agree with the logic. Also there is nothing in the instruction manual about how to do this (I looked). I have two monitors, why on earth would I want to open the second view on the primary monitor? Makes no sense to me at all.
Apologies, but I have no idea what the first sentence of your second paragraph means.

What I meant is that in dual mode you have two windows; you can drag either one to the 2nd monitor.
I’m glad you got it working.

Thanks again.

When I click on the dual monitor icon in the bottom left of the Browse window, the other window does not open and when I hover over On1 on the taskbar, the second On1 window there is a muted white and "not responding" is in the title bar. I have to shut it down and On1 as well
If I try to drag the On1 window to my second monitor, the program freezes with the "not responding" message again.
How did any of you get the dual monitors to work with On1 2020?
Tech support owes me an answer but I thought perhaps the knowledge might be in this blog. TIA.

Either - <window> <dual mode> <show> or Ctrl+F11. Not tried dragging anything.

Eric, the first thing I would check it that you are using the latest video card drivers and that you have configured your system to make the best use of it. You can start with the instructions at https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000138471-How-to-Update-Video-Card-Driver-and-Set-Default-GPU-Open-GL-3-3-Error-Windows-Only-.
You might also go to the Windows specific section of these forums where there has been a lot of discussion on setting up the system and GPU drivers for optimal performance.

Occasionally I will have an app that goes into some off screen area and also into a tiny window size. If this happens, nothing you do with the mouse will work. The trick for me is to use the keyboard to get the window back into the screen area and size it. You will have to probably do something in the Windows registry to be able to get this context window to popup under Windows 10.
On my machine (Windows 10) I hover the mouse over the window I want bring back, and enter Ctrl-Shift Right mouse click. This will bring up the following context window:
Also, sometimes there is a dialog box open somewhere that you cannot see and I use the Alt-Tab key to bring up each program to the forefront in a small window and make them the active app. This lets me see pretty much any dialog box that might be causing me from working.

I forgot to mention... Once you get that Ctrl-Shift Right mouse click context window up, you must use the keyboard arrow keys to perform the Move and Size functions. You can press and hold the appropriate arrow key to make it move/size quickly too.

First of all, thanks to everyone for the advice they have offered.....let me try to take the suggestions in order:
"Either - <window> <dual mode> <show> or Ctrl+F11. Not tried dragging anything." When I try this, the secondary window is trying to open but fails with "not responding".....here is a snapshot of my desktop taskbar area that shows On1 2020 open and the secondary window trying to open but is failing....doesn't show in this screen cap but the secondary "white" window shows the "not responding" message in the window header:
"check it that you are using the latest video card drivers and that you have configured your system to make the best use of it"....I updated my Nvidia RTX 2070 drivers, rebooted, ensured On1 is authorized in the Nvidia Control Panel, rebooted and the "not responding" issue is still there
"Occasionally I will have an app that goes into some off screen area"....I am familiar with this potential issue and know how to retrieve off-screen windows.....this is not my problem as from the screen cap earlier, the secondary window in On1 2020 is "not responding" for some reason
Question, could anti-virus software be an issue? I use W10 Defender and Malwarebytes. TIA.

I doubt that your anti-virus software is the cause of your problem but it is easy enough to turn it off temporarily while you try Photo RAW again and see if it has any affect. I use Malwarebytes on my Mac without an problems.

Brain, you are correct....turned off anti-virus, and the problem is still there. Thx.

Eric
Not sure if this has been covered in this thread or not. I'm assuming that you do have Windows set up for dual monitors and that you have already had screens showing there. Just wondering if you can move the On1 MAIN screen to the other window and back without using dual-mode (shift + win + left arrow).
Any windows program should work on either screen, so On1 should run there as well. If that works but dual-mode doesn't, you might need tech support, but if On1 doesn't work on the second screen then it's probably not On1 causing the problem.

Rick, I do have Windows 10 set up for dual monitors, and any other program (i.e. Photoshop, Lightroom, Pinnacle Studio 23, Davinci Resolve 16, etc) can be dragged from my primary display to my secondary display without crashing. When I try dragging and dropping On1 Photo 2020, it crashes with the "not responding" in the window header. When I try to use the dual monitor icon in the browse window of On1 2020, it shows the second On1 window in the taskbar trying to open but it has the "not responding" message on its' banner. In either case I have to force On1 to shut down as it is non-responsive at that pont. Strange.
I am in touch with tech support at On1 to try and resolve the issue, but so far no luck. I had hoped the users forum would possibly have a member that encountered my issue before and found a solution. I will keep pursuing as I am somewhat OCD and I know the dual monitors should work with On1, or at a minimum, be able to run On1 from my secondary display. Thx.

Eric, It might be something related to the GPU and how the video output ports are configured on the video card.
You might try going into ON1 preferences->System Tab->Performance and try and shut down all of the performance things in there. Basically slide the video card strength all the way to the left, and uncheck all of the boxes in the Performance area.
If this helps clear up the "not responding", then I would spend some time on the video graphics settings in Windows (or preferably in your video card's specialized configuration setup (Nvidia, AMD, etc).I am not recommending operating ON1 with the performance settings like that, but just for troubleshooting to find the root of the problem.

Eric, so you have an RTX Nvidia board? Wow. I would be pointing fingers at that for sure. Driver issues or something related to NVidia's support for RTX. You can also try using NVidia Studio drivers instead of the gaming drivers.
On my Nvidia 1080 video board, I did not setup a specialized profile for ON1 in the NVidia driver. I simply set the global settings and every piece of software uses the same thing. It is not like I am running all sorts of things at the same time and this way when a new ON1 comes out, I do nothing in the NVidia specialized add for ON1 (like pointing to the new .exe).

Kevin, thanks....I will try your suggestions in your first reply regarding the On1 performance settings.
As for the video settings, under Windows and Nvidia's Control Panel settings I am running the monitors at their 1080p resolutions. Having said that, the secondary display is a Dell touch monitor....perhaps that is the problem but all other programs can be dragged and dropped to it and they all run fine, even with the touch input.
As for your second post, I am running the most recent Nvidia Studio drivers as I am not much of a gamer but do have a high end system focused on photography and video editing. I will try the Nvidia game drivers to see if that changes anything.
In the Nvidia Control Panel I have On1 added in the 3D section as per On1's tech support article....is this not necessary? Thanks for your time and suggestions....I will keep plugging away.

Eric,
As far as the 3D section add... ON1's support article is to be followed. But you have two options to follow it. The one they recommend is to use the Program Settings tab to add a special setting for ON1's executable. This special settings allows you to tweak the Global Settings or change any of the Global setting for ON1. What I have done is to set the Global Settings to the optimal settings for editing with ON1. These settings are then used globally by all programs that use the GPU. I do not use my machine for anything more important then photo editing and most photo editing software wants the same settings that ON1 wants.
By setting the Global Settings to what ON1 wants, I do not have to worry about doing it later when ON1 releases a new version. They change the program name and so you must remember to add another tab for the new ON1 name when it arrives.0 -
With On1's tech support, I found the solution:
I unplugged my third monitor (HDMI TV) and left the other two displays (DisplayPorts 1&2) plugged in to my Asus Nvidia RTX 2070 graphics card......when I tied to move the On1 program window to the 2nd monitor, it worked....when I clicked on the dual monitor icon in the On1 program, the secondary window appeared on the secondary monitor.
When I plugged the third monitor back into the RTX 2070 HDMI port, On1 dual monitors still worked!
For reference, I think there was something in the system settings that when 3 monitors were plugged in when originally installing On1, it caused On1 to be confused with trying to use dual monitors with 3 monitors hooked up. All seems to be well now. Thx for all of your suggestions and ideas.

Eric, just FYI, there is nothing in this thread that says you have 3 monitors or how they are connected. If you had said that, I'm sure one of us would have suggested that you try removing the odd one. It's important to provide these details when asking a question.

Rick, thanks for the feedback.....I should have mentioned I am driving three monitors off the RTX 2070. It never occured to me that the third one might be the issue as I could drag any other program to it (it is in another room) and they worked fine, except for On1. My two (primary/secondary) desktop displays are right in front of me, so I never really gave that third one much thought. Mea culpa!
