Tough love :-)
Hi everyone,
I love ON1 and would like to use it as my main professional RAW software. But unfortunately I have to delay, too much technical issues and UI inconsistencies for the moment.
I would like to recap some of them here, not all the bugs I experimented of course (I report them). I'm aware there is a lot to do, some suggestions are really simple to implement (on the theme "less is more"), others are probably hard dev.
DAM: still serious keywords issues despite the 2019.5.1 release. Impossible to use this browser for professional purposes.
DAM: Albums automatically unfold as I do Edit and then Browser, irritating, lost of room.
UI efficiency: very often, why 2 clicks when one is enough? i.e. choosing Color picker is not enough, have to click first on "Color range" / i.e. in Filters, clicking on the heart (pick-up pictures) is not enough, I have to light the Filters colored indicator first / i.e. why G doesn't drive me to the Grid at once, I have to strike it twice from the Edit module? / etc.
And please... all the picture main infos always shown (ISO, size, type...). There is a lot of room, especially at the bottom of the screen.
Copy/Paste Settings efficiency: please invert the command. A panel for the choices of what to copy at Cmd(Ctrl)+Shift+C and then just Cmd+Shift+V on the choose pictures (like in LR).
Why? First because I may copy one setting on several further pictures, less gestures, time saving. And as I copy I obviously don't see anything, the Copy choice panel would become a interesting ok sign. Sometimes I don't copy anything because the program is still busy opening the image, I scroll elsewhere and paste, and nothing happen... Irritating.
Masks UI efficiency: one of the ON1 strengths...
Why two vignettes (regular and strong) as it leads to the same mask drawing?
Why this terrible list of 4 different gradients? And the "None" choice... A mess in my opinion. And the rotation button of a gradient is too close to the center: harsh and brutal mouvement.
Please do it exactly like in Lightroom (and so many other softs), it's just simple and perfect.
UI consistency: F leads to filmstrip, fine. To get rid of it, the intuitive reflex is to strike again F... nope it's E! / Why not having the same brush and gradient tools (AI brush, etc. AND shortcuts) for Local Adjustments masks and Effects masks? Weird. / Why a Color Adjustment Effect and a Color Enhancer Effect (the first is totally included in the second)?...
And please a panel too customize the keyboard shortcuts. I would for instance add a keyword to open the Info panel! ("I" is for Portrait, which I barely use, and why "I"?...)
And, maybe above all, a real and efficient Noise reduction. For now it is just unusable (in Dev Details or in Noise reduction filter). When I see the "not so useful" Portrait tab (slow and inaccurate) I want to swap with a powerful and subtile Noise reduction tab... Dreaming?
Last but not least. If ON1 reform the main part of the UI issues and technical bugs and achieve a real professional software, it could be sold at a higher price in my opinion. As long as it is under a year of LR+PS subscription, it will be well priced. DXO (fantastic NR!) is higher. Capture One is much higher. Luminar only is a bit lower.
Of course it's a very personal opinion...
Comments welcome and good work to all.
