    Stephen,

As I read your reply, the Wacom bug *SHOULD* be fixed, not *IS* fixed.

    John Inglis,

recently purchased ON1 Photo RAW 2019. What does this new version mean for me?

If you purchased Photo RAW 2019 very recently, you may be eligible for a free upgrade to 2020. Or, a pro-rated upgrade discount may be available to you depending on your purchase date of version 2019. These will be sent automatically to your email address that is registered to version 2019. If you believe your product registration info is not current and you aren't receiving ON1 emails such as Loyalty Rewards each month for RAW 2019 owners, you can contact us with your current email address and your Photo RAW 2019 purchase date to ensure you are notified about upgrade discounts. If you are already receiving ON1 owner emails such as Loyalty Rewards, you don't have to do anything. Just watch your inbox for your upgrade discount as we get closer to the Fall release of Photo RAW 2020.

This is the way software works.  Essentially, if you want all the bug fixes you have to buy the latest version. This is also known as a subscription.  Most companies now seem to be doing the one major upgrade per year thing.  Doesn’t leave a good taste in the mouth when you have to pay for bug fixes. I’m still using Lightroom six because until the very latest update of ON1 I haven’t been able to work efficiently at all and almost every rendered photo looked different than within the software. And even now it slows down considerably once I add a few effects.  I’ve paid for 2 versions of ON1 and a graphics card upgrade and still don’t trust it as much as LR. But at least the last month it’s been useable.  Seems like 1 or 2 more 2019 updates would make almost everyone happy.  Thinking about finally giving in to the Adobe subscription, but one thing going for ON1 is that I can consider switching to another company and still be able to revisit and revise old photos.  That’s a luxury that true subscription software doesn’t give us.

You are right, Paul.  I guess I should have moved the "essentially" from my first sentence to the second.  I said exactly what you said - that with On1 you don't lose the software if you decide not to upgrade.  But if you're forced to upgrade because the bugs are unacceptable in the last version (which absolutely should be fixed), or if you're a pro who wants on the latest features, then this IS essentially a subscription - minus of course, the point we both made about still being able to use the software.  That's the only difference between this model and a subscription.  Most of the companies that don't do subscriptions have moved to this model of a major upgrade every year ... because they know their dedicated users will purchase every year.

I'm mainly a sound engineer and the software I use (Cubase) comes out with a new version every single year in the same month.  I buy it because I earn a living from it.  I think I've only skipped one version in the last 7 years.  One thing Cubase now does differently than when I skipped a version, is that even if you skip a version, you'll still pay the same price to upgrade because it costs more to upgrade to the latest if you've skipped a version .... which means you might as well upgrade to every single version to stay current.  It's great that I'd keep the latest Cubase version if I stop upgrading, but I pay every single year (which is very similar to a subscription).

ON1 2019 is an unfinished product. It has a lot of good things, it has some things that could be done better. These are the features that one hopes will go forward to 2020 with improvements. But it also has a lot of serious bugs that have never been addressed. These are the ‘features’ that should not be going into 2020. The problem is, buying 2020 will be a leap into the dark as there is no mention of these bugs having been fixed. It will be a dilemma and most sensible users will hold back and wait and see.

On the other hand, ON1 could do the decent thing and not release a new version until the current one is fixed.

Just posted this as a new topic as I didn't see your post.

With the upcoming release of PR 2020 I asked tech support if the Wacom tablet bug (i.e. them basically not working with PR 2019) will be fixed.

    I received this reply:

    -----------------------------------------------Begin

    Hello,

The Wacom bug should be addressed and fixed with the upcoming 2020 release.

Let us know if you need further assistance. Thanks for choosing and using ON1 Software!

    -----------------------------------------------End

Fingers crossed that this serious deficit is rectified.

The price of the upgrade is very expensive. I recently bought on1 Photo raw for $ 50 and will I need to shell out $ 80 to upgrade?

    0
  • Stephen Drew

Same here Marcio. I will do 2 things:

    1. Wait to see if the tablet issue really is sorted (If it isn't I won't be upgrading anytime soon).

    2. Wait for the next sale. ON1 do seem to have quite a few

    Indeed Gerry,

Hence my hanging fire on any 2020 upgrade.

I barely use PR 2019 due to lack of tablet support, so no more cash until this is sorted - when SHOULD becomes IS in fact :)

Software blackmail: All the things you were promised in 2019 and didn't get you will have to pay for in 2020. Or will it be 2021? Or 2022...Or 2023...

Surely this must break some consumer law?

I just spent $64 on Photo Raw 2019 one month ago. I would be veryy unhappy to be asked to shell out $80 for an upgrade 2 months after. Will there be a free or reduced price grace period?

I would be surprised if there isn't one more version of 2019 before the end of the year. There hasn't been an announcement, but that's usually what they do.

    Here we go again ...

So probably no more fixes for 2019 ??

How can this policy possibly be acceptable to customers?

Folks pay for a product, learn how to use it, and invest their time and energy, with the expectation that features will be delivered, bugs will be fixed, performance will be as advertised.  Seems reasonable, but has never been the case with On1 2017, 2018, 2019.  Problems and shortcomings are carried forward to the next years release and coupled with newer features that take a while to work as advertised and only seem to compound things.

After a year of frustration the the whole process begins again.

I think I'll stick with RAW2019 for a while.  I really like the product that it is advertised to be.  Perhaps things will improve in time.

It's only August. To assume there wouldn't be another update in the next 4 months is kind of silly don't you think? Especially knowing that On1 has been working on some of those problems all year.

"Surely this must break some consumer law?"

I'm pretty sure in the U.K. they'd have been in permanent breach of Trade Description legislation since the launch of the original Photo Raw.

    Rick:

I certainly hope that you are correct and that On1 will finally fix the bugs in RAW2019 -- many of which have been around for a couple of years.  There may be another update, but the On1 focus will surely be on 2020 and a new catalog of products.

If I were a betting man I'd look at past history and conclude that what we now have is probably as good as it gets. The 2019 product is usable - with some workarounds, and we know which areas to stay away from.

    We'll see - fingers crossed !

I agree with Brian, we will have the chance to test the On1 2020 with the trial version.
Sure, thinking about paying out $ 80 after what we went through with the On1 2019 bugs isn't the best.
Perhaps if they did a special price (special special) for 2019 users, it would be a good idea .....

Now I'm sure, after 2 weeks of work with the latest version of On1 Photoraw, for me that the release 2019.6 is not better than 2019.5.1.

About the price for update users 2019 >2020, I think it looks a little bit ridiculous at this time: ON1 2019 more or less 60-70$, update  more than 80 !!! Wait and see...

But what afraid me is that the team spend time to create a new "on1 video" and more instead of use it to improve their photo program, like Skylum did some monthes ago unsuccessfully; when I asked the ON1 team about french localization, they said (Stevie I think) me "we are a small society, team... we can't do that" or so. Now they announce 11 languages ! But why do they spend time and energy on future ON1 video and other unwanted things (for drone, smartphone...video...), all we need is the best photo program !

(I like ON1 PR 2019, not so many bugs, and future Maps, Print I'll enjoy !)

Iv'e literally just bought the ON1 Photo RAW 2019 last week, I agree it's very frustrating, and disheartening. I hope I get the upgrade at a discounted or even a free one,  as do many others :/

    Ahhh I forgot ...
I am in Italy and to buy the update, in addition to 79.99$ I have to add 17 $ of Country Outuput Tax ...
I'm seriously considering moving to Skylum 4 (cheaper and no taxes)

Last year there were no taxes ...

I hope for a coupon for foreigners.

Interesting, why doesn't Skylum have the same tax. Was it written in Italy?

Edit: Nope, just checked... Skylum is a software developing company based in Bellevue, Washington.

    Jason,

I guess you could call it a subscription by stealth!  However you describe it in my opinion it's insidious and I'm not playing that game any more.  I'm sticking with ON1 10 because it has a couple of useful and unique features, and it's the last version of their software that I've used which does what it's supposed to do!  I have lots of other software which do the annual update thing, but the difference is theirs already work (in the main) so you only have to decide based on new features - they don't announce the new version with a fanfare which includes "a ton of bug fixes".

I paid £10 tax in UK,  funny thing is the software actually said it was from the UK that I was buying it from.

    Hi Rick,

I don't know why, but at check out the price is the one indicated.
    No more tax.
I thought Skylum was Australian Company but in the footer of the web site it is written Registered trademark in the USA but it also says "and other countries".

I seem to remember ON1 saying a few years ago that they had to start charging us UK customers VAT because they'd opened an office over here - but I could be getting confused with something else.

They charge me 21%   here in The Netherlands.

2020 is great program, but photo rendering very slow. No bugs encountered yet. I'm using a 2013 MacBook Pro with 16G of RAMS so surprised at how slow rendering is in comparison with 2019.

Edward, I recommend adding an external SSD to your laptop dedicated solely to ON1's use. In Preferences > System you can Move the PerfectBrowseCacheScratch space to that SSD.

A lot of the slowness comes from having your photos, the OS, the program, and its working space (scratch and cache) all on the same drive. Only one of those things can be accessed at a time so when the OS needs to do some swapping while the program is reading/writing the scratch file & reading the photo file simultaneously you wind up with an I/O traffic jam. Imagine a 4 lane highway getting funneled down into a 1 lane, 1-way bridge. Adding the SSD creates a new bridge so more traffic can get through the bottleneck. Make sure it has its own direct connection to the computer, do not connect it to a hub with other drives for best performance.

I also have my photos on an external SSD for the same reason as well as portability.

We always have the option of downloading the trial version before deciding if the upgrade price is worth it or not. And there will be a public beta made available next month for those who are willing to test unreleased software and hopefully report the issues they find and not just post a complaint on the forums.
