no dialogue box about how to save copy
When I open a photo there is no box asking me how I want to save the file. The copy is going to my word documents which isn't where I want it to be-I want it to stay. in my pictures file.

Lynda, You don't specify what program you are using. If you are using PhotoRaw 2019 when you export a file. Click on the "Save To:" dropdown then select Folder. After that click "Choose" and navigate to the folder you want to save to then click "select folder" in the lower Right of the navigation window.

You can choose the file type in the Export dialogue and right below it is the destination folder. If that doesn't answer your question, post more details here about what you want to do.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am using ON Effects 2019 and am not seeing any of the boxes that you are showing. I watched the introductory video and it says that when I open an image a dialogue box should appear allowing me to to select the type of file and how I want to save it. I am not getting that box and can't see any place on the screen to bring that up. The dialogue box should come up automatically and it is not doing that.

Ok, to start with, you never said you were using On1 Effects, most of us are using Photo raw here. The export in On1 Effects is the same as On1 Photo raw and will look the same as what we posted.
In addition, we need to know if you're using the program as a plugin or standalone. If you're using standalone, you should see the Export button in the lower right as shown. If you're using plugin mode you should have a DONE button to send you back to the program you started from.
If you don't have the user guide, you can get it here...

I am using the program as a stand alone. I did try the export button but it is still sending to my office program rather than putting it in my pictures folder. The user guide just says that the dialogue box should appear automatically, which it isn't doing.

Don't know what dialogue box you're referring to. What page is it in the guide? (Or copy it and post it here) When you select Export, you will get the image we posted above.
You need to be more specific about what you're doing. What do you see, what are you clicking. We can't say what you're doing wrong by guessing.

The user guide says "the Export panel opens on the right side of the Effects window,". Like this, then you can specify the location in the "Save to" drop down box.

Here is what the guide says on page 6:
When you first launch ON1 Effects 2019, you’ll see the Open Photo icon in the center of the main window. To open an image, you can either drag an image anywhere into the window from the desktop, or you can click on the Open button to navigate to a specific file. Once you’ve selected an image, Effects will present you with a dialog box that gives you options for what happens when you save your edits. You have two main options, to edit a copy of the original file, or you can edit the original. Choosing the latter option will make all of your edits on the original file, overwriting it when you save the image. (In general, we don’t recommend this option, especially if you are working on JPG files, since the saving process can introduce artifacts by applying additional compression to your image.)The other option, Edit a Copy with Settings Attached, will make a copy of your image for editing in Effects. If you choose that setting, the Copy Options section of the dialog box gives you the following options:1. File Format: Sets the file type of the copy: Photoshop (PSD), TIFF, or JPEG. 2. Color Space: Sets the default color space when opening the file; the list includes Adobe RGB 1998, Apple RGB, sRGB, ProPhoto RGB, or ColorMatch RGB.3. Bit Depth: Sets the bit depth for the file; the choices are 8- or 16-bit.4. Resolution: Sets the file’s output resolution.5. Don’t ask me again: If wish to use the same settings each time you open an image, click this box. (This setting can be changed in Preferences’ Files tab.)SAVING YOUR IMAGES AFTER EDITING IN EFFECTS After your editing session, click the Done button at the bottom of the Effects window to save your image. If you don’t wish to save your edits, click the Cancel button.

Yes, it does say that - but there's nothing in there about where the output file will be saved which is what you originally asked about. It looks like at some point you've checked the "Don't ask me again" box which is why you don't see it (or you've unchecked the next box I'm going to describe). Go to Edit>Preferences and select the Files tab. Then make sure there's a tick in the "Show these options every time" checkbox. To get the file to go where you want it to you'll still need to specify the output location in the Export panel on the right hand side - though if you just click "Done" it should be placed in the source folder.

Ok, I've been doing some research on this topic because It got really confusing really fast, so this is what I found...
- For those of you paying attention, On1 Effects does not use sidecars.
- On1 Effects is non-destructive for RAW files, but NOT non-destructive for JPG/TIFF etc.
- When dragging a file to open, if it's RAW, Effects automatically creates a copy based on your preferences.
- When dragging a file to open, if it's JPG/TIFF etc, you have the option to make a copy or use the original.
- Effects will save the changes back to whatever file was selected above.
- The copy is actually created when you click DONE and it's saved back to the same folder as the original.
- Even if you want to Export your changes, the edits will still be saved to a file, not to a database.
Lynda, you say the file is going to your Word documents, I need to know where it started from. As fas as I can tell, the copy will always be saved next to the original. I can't find any options to change that. If you want your final image to be saved somewhere else, you'll need to Export it to that folder.
If you're not getting the dialogue box anymore, go to Preferences : Files. You can make changes there and turn the box back on. Preferences are only available AFTER you load an image and it's in the Edit menu.
Let us know how that goes.

Hello Rick and Everyone Who Has tried To Solve My Issue. I have figured it out. I found the dialogue box in Preferences and changed some settings there. But I have discovered that when I press DONE after editing the image, the copy image goes back to my original file in a folder labelled as Adobe Photoshop Document., so that when I open that it opens in my documents. But if I press Export and then DONE it goes as copy to my original file which is what I want to happen. So, it appears that my problem was not having the dialogue box settings set up correctly and not knowing the correct sequence to use to save the copy image.
Anyway, I hope that all this makes sense and thanks again,

Export is a whole other step in the process. Whether you Export or not, you still have to decide where your edits will be saved, which will be either in the original file or in a copy of it. Generally, if you don't want to lose the original photo so that you can keep it untouched like a negative, you'll need to make copies of every photo that you edit.
Export will give you more flexibility when saving the final results, but you're still going to have either that copy somewhere or an altered original with your edits in it.
Actually, I'm a bit surprised at how On1 Effects works. Most of us in this forum use On1 Photo Raw which has been non-destructive for a few years now.
