I have no idea at this point what has happened. I dropped back to the previous version (.7955), and it is not working either. I can't get past browse mode, it fails on something in the directory (or so it appears).

The program fails within 60 seconds of opening, and I can't accomplish anything, I can't troubleshoot, basically I have nothing I can do at this point, except ask if anyone here may have any ideas on where to go from here.

I am dead in the water.

Can you dismount the drive with your Pictures folder? If so, try that then launch the program so it is forced to look somewhere other than whatever directory it is currently trying to browse. If it does not crash again the problem is most likely a corrupt file or sidecar in that directory. Once it is running you should be able to reconnect your pictures drive.

You might be able to find out what file it is having a problem with by looking at the log file. I'm not sure where it is located on a Windows system, maybe Rick can help with that.

Another option is to hold the Shift key while launching the program. This will offer you the option to reset the program's settings. Do that then go into Preferences and reset anything you've set there like the Pictures location (don't turn on cataloging again, it will pick up the existing one), and Scratch & PerfectBrowseCache locations in the System tab.

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for your response, I have looked at the log file, and I can't find a message or notification that looks different from yesterday when it was working to today when it is not, that is to say all messages appear to be the same when it ran and when it did not.

I will dismount the disk drive and see what happens, but I have thousands of photos, and moving quickly I have moved out of the initial directory where this problem started, into another on 3 occasions, and the failure has indeed occurred in multiple directories. I will still give that a shot here in a bit and report results back.

I did fall back to 2019 and it seems to function. That at lease keeps me in business.

    Brian,

Since it seemed the easiest to accomplish, I started the version I currently have installed (.7955), holding the shift key as you suggested, and let the system pull them back in as it does. Although this is new to me, I had not heard those steps before.

At any rate, so far it is up and running, and longer that at any other point today. So, I have not seen any other complaints, do I attempt .7975  again do you think?

Thank you very much for your assistance good sir. I am hoping for a quick fix to the tablet (in my case Wacom) issue, other than that I have been enjoying the 2020 software, glad you were here to get me back up and running.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks again,

    Wayne

I'd give 7975 another try. If the problem happens again it needs to be reported to support. If it does not happen I figure it's one of those transient things that unfortunately happens.

For the Wacom issue Wayne Gallagher on the Plus forums reported he was able to solve his problems and now has full functionality on his Wacom tablet after installing an "optional" Widows update.

"Well, I have good news, my Wacom tablet got all of it’s functionality back…today.
I installed the OPTIONAL windows update KB4517211 OS Build 18362.387. I checked on the few things that were discussed as likely problems, such as speakers, printers and all seemed good for me. So, on a whim, I opened up my Wacom Tablet properties, opened up ON1 2020 and voila, it worked. Now it did not initially work, I had to turn ON windows ink, make sure the selection to use the pen in the pressure adjusts size mode as it is easier to see, at least for me. As I said initially it did not work, turned windows ink off, no good, then for some reason I decided to turn windows ink on again, and there it was, working. I can use my pressure sensitivity, and I can get my pen to work on the sliders as well, I am elated that somewhere along the line, all the engineers worked out the problems.
Thanks to all that participated in fixing the problem, and to all of those that tested and tested and tested…..SUCCESS!"

Give this a try and let us know how it goes.

    Thanks Brian,

I am actually that Wayne Gallagher, and that did work for a while, but it was lost. Here is a tidbit back to you, Brian Lawson taught me how to reset my setting on 2020, and got me back in business, and I have no idea what EXACTLY that holding down the shift key has to do with what, but right now my Wacom tablet is actually working again, with pressure sensitivity, in Local Filters! Not sure why that might be, but wanted to let folks know that is working again for me.

I would also tell folks on the Wacom issue, make sure you have the latest driver, windows ink need to be turned on now, and I hope for the best for all.

Indeed we all are a team here, helping each other out, KUDOS to you again Brian. I thank you, and I once again will keep folks informed.

I will try .7975 again shortly, right now I am smiling ear to ear.

DOH! I quit looking at the names after a while, sorry. How embarrassing. :)

The shift-key during startup works because either the program was pointing at a location it is having some problem with or because some setting had become corrupt which can happen when programs crash. Resetting the settings cleared them all to default values, the same as a new installation.

I'm glad it was that simple to get you going again. Let us know how it goes with 7975.

I too got notified of an update when I started On1 this morning. Strange, I thought, as I had just installed the official 2020 a couple of days previously and it was zooming along marvellously. Such speed and efficiency had never been seen before in all my time with On1. I was a happy bunny!!! But, being an obedient soul, I downloaded 7975 as I was unsure what version I'd installed previously. Oh! woe is me.... The performance was back to what I was used to and I was crest fallen. So I ran the script that is supposed to erase everything On1 from my computer. IT DIDN'T!! When I re-installed 7975 I found that Cache and Catalogue remained intact. However, the good news is that PR2020 is now pretty close to the performance of 7955.

I've yet to come across any other software that is so unpredictable in the installation/uninstallation process.

Glutton for punishment that I am, I'm going to see if I can use the above info and get my Wacom working again.

Well, mostly good news. I am not crashing, and all seems good, with the exception of my Wacom Tablet. A real staple in my post processing work once again is not completely functional in my workflow. It is slow to respond with windows ink on, and I can't draw properly with it. This makes fine detail editing impossible. If I turn windows ink off, then it responds well, but no pressure sensitivity, so no fine adjustments on the photos.

I have seen the tablet work in Beta 2, then no work in the first official release, then not work in the first official release, and now in .7957 it is gone again. Boggles my head.

As I say mostly good news, and I know the tablet issue is being worked, but I sure do need that back... quickly. It is so important to my editing.

I tried all the tricks I know, rebooted when the new on1 was installed, checked on Tablet Properties, Checked the Wacom Desktop center, made sure the pressure sensitive related choices in on1 were correct. No joy.

    Soon I hope, real soon.

    Wayne
