Sidecar available but processing disappeared
Hi. I activated Sidecare in On1 2020.
These are also created. Now I opened On1 2020 and imported new styles. On1 closed and reopened. The styles are imported properly. Only my edits are all gone.
The Sidecare are in the corresponding folder with the original photos.
But in On1 2020 I will not see the edited symbol in the previews and the editing itself is no longer visible.
Is there a way to reread the sidecare files?

I have also had similar issues but on internal drives, however, it seemed to fix itself. On mine I don't think the edits were actually lost, but the database was not giving the info to the display at the time. I have also had numerous occasions where the little edit symbol was not displaying and fixed it by refreshing the preview.

This issue ist still ongoing. When I started Photoraw 2021 on a new computer and assigned the Folders with the Fotos and the sidecars to it, all on1 files where overwritten. Edits of 5000 pictures on my NAS are gone. What a pitty.
I had 2021 installed on another computer before and were facing no issues even after the update. Thus I didn't copy Data before setting up the new computer.
This seems to be definetly a worse programming.

This is the reason I didn’t upgrade to 2021, It’s unreliable. Also the poor jpg quality and color banding is an issue for me. It’s a shame because I like the functionality a lot

Jens-Mtthias, you need to contact tech support about this. Simply installing 2021 on a new machine should not have affected the .on1 sidecars on your NAS. When you go back to the old computer are the edits missing from there as well? If not things should be recoverable for the new system.

This has been going on for years and On1 seem unable to do anything about it. In fact, they told me months ago that they were unable to duplicate the issue, even though countless others have reported it. I reported it again last week as it's still an issue with Photo Raw 2021 and I had to go through the work-round yet again to restore all the edits on my external drive. Support asked me to record my screen showing what was happening and to send them my logs.I am not optimistic about a solution!

@Peter Gude : I haven't seen such issue before. To me JPG looks fine at least on my 4k TV. I produced a wall paper (~3x1,2m) from one of my pictures. But in that case I used TIFF for export not jpg.
@Brian: yes some of the edits I can get back. But the older ones on my NAS will need fresh work out.
@Ray Miles; If I would have known how to record something that I don't expected to happen... I tried to figure out what it could be, but the issue "disappeared" - maybe it was in front of the screen? Damn :(

Hi,
I had the same issue with an external HDD. All my catalogues, album and edits from photos on exernal HDD disappeared overnight.
Photos on the internal SSD are NOT affected by that. BUT: all of the sidecar files on the external HDD are still present, just ON1 is unable to find them.
I suspect it happens when Macbook Pro is switching to energy saving mode (during the night) and the ext. HDD was shut down by the system while ON1 is still running - so ON1 lost connection to the ext. HDD and didnt have the chance to write the necessary infromation.
I have no idea if this from a technical approach is right, but it happens to me the second time under similar conditions and only with elements on the external drive.
Is there a way to "activate" the already existing information again or to tell ON1 where to search for?
Macbook Pro 2020; Big Sur

The only possibility is to do what has been suggested above, Quit the program and move the images with the missing edits and their .on1 & .xmp sidecar files to a new location. I use a sub-folder inside the folder where the images reside. Relaunch the program then go to the new sub-folder. If the edits are still in the .on1 file and haven't been lost somehow, the program should see them again. After that, in the Browser, you can move them back to their original location then delete the now empty sub-folder.

Hi Brian,
many thanks!
I could recover most of the edits and created new catalogued folders with that.
Do you have an idea how to get back the content of the current album? It was a lot of work to select about 50 photos out of about 70.000. Except the photos on the internal SSD all other elements within my album disappeared. Is there any relevant file that could be recovered from time machine?

You'd think that should work but I don't know which files/folders it would be. My best guess would be somewhere inside ~/Library/Application Support/ON1/ON1 Photo RAW 2021. If you are going to try restoring it, I would be sure to make a backup copy 1st, just in case the restore makes things worse.

Hi.
I have had the same problems, using an iMac with Big Sur and an external Samsung SSD X5. I use On1 2021, subscription version.
I made a new folder and moved raws and sidecar files to that folder. All photos that I HAD NOT opened in development mode got their edits back BUT those that I had opened and merely closed (without alterations) had been overwritten without edit information.
I then moved all the content of the main folder, including all folders and photos, to a "new" main folder on the same ssd, and all my work was back but it took some time to adopt all the presets to the photos after opening the folders the first time after the move.
Very disturbing! This needs to be adressed ASAP, even if this fix was working.

Be sure to report this to support Ted. You can use the Submit a request link below. Also, include the information requested in this article on How to submit a problem to ON1 Tech Support - A Step-by-step Guide.

So sorry to hear this is still an ongoing issue. I struggled with issues of lost edits for several months in 2019 and into March 2020. There are many threads on this problem. I think it is Covid. The vaccine I have taken has been very successful, tho painful.
Since last March I have used Adobe Bridge, ACR and occasionally Photoshop. Also occasionally ON1 as a plugin. I have not lost any edits or files and have finally gotten to the point where I am as comfortable with these tools as I was with ON1. Big effort, kicking and screaming all the way. But now I will never go back. You can't trust ON1 with your data. Life is too short to spend time on data recovery. Take more photos instead!
I miss the elegant design of ON1 as the Lightroom/Photoshop replacement for most of us. But this very appealing vast concept suffers from half vast implementation when it comes to digital asset management
I strongly recommend using ON1 plugins only, and bite the bullet and adapt to Lightroom/Adobe Camera Raw and basic Photoshop. Or possibly Capture One with the plugins.
I wish I was still able to use ON1 as my one-stop go to software, but save yourself some grief. You must have a reliable DAM. The lack of forthright acknowledgement by ON1 that this is a critical problem is a concern.
