Sidecar available but processing disappeared
Hi. I activated Sidecare in On1 2020.
These are also created. Now I opened On1 2020 and imported new styles. On1 closed and reopened. The styles are imported properly. Only my edits are all gone.
The Sidecare are in the corresponding folder with the original photos.
But in On1 2020 I will not see the edited symbol in the previews and the editing itself is no longer visible.
Is there a way to reread the sidecare files?
I have similar problems. For me it started in April/May when I was working on pictures from Santiago de Compostela. I "imported" them into 2019.2 but during editing these pictures a new release of 2019.5 was available - I downloaded it and since then all the problems started - plenty of crashes, lost edits... Then I installed 2019.5-1 and then 2019.6 and while stability improved, problems with lost edits continue.I tried several times to completely uninstall the 2019.6 incl. registry cleaning and installing clean version of 2019.6.When I "imported" new files to ON1 in Sept., I was able to edit them without issues (just some slow process sometimes). When I closed the application and re-opened it later again, all the new pictures imported in September looked good in the new folder. But only until the moment when I opened an older folder (for example the folder from Spain which I created in 2019.2). It took very long time to load the previews (but OK, it was a huge folder) but I could see many edits lost again. Then I switched to the new folder from September and suddenly I could see lost edits there as well.So it looks as if the old folders are somehow "contaminated" by the defective 2019.2 version of ON1 and when I touch the old files the epidemic spreads :-(I tried to re-apply the edits from my external hard-drive (which I never open in ON1). So I always overwrote the files with lost edits on D drive by the same files backed-up on external drive. In many cases the edits got indeed re-created but in some cases not (the .on1 file usually contains edits but these cannot be seen in reality in ON1).Now I made an installation of ON1 2019.6 on a computer where no ON1 application had ever been installed but the result is the same - I see no edits applied to many files.Bad news for me is that this problem is not related just to the files edited in 2019.5 but as this thread reveals, it also happens with pictures imported just to 2020 :-(I have been reporting my problems to tech support - so far I got feedback that they can see that the edits are lost but do not know why.Petr1
Has anybody solved this issue ? I just lost all my edits in 2020... Sidecar files are still untouched in the same folder but no more edit appearing.....
Tino, I can't imagine any reason that you would lose your edits under normal conditions. The sidecar files are copies of the edits that are already stored in the Database.
If you just installed 2020 or moved your files before turning on the sidecars, there may be an unusual reason that might cause that problem, we would need to know more details. In any case, unless you have a backup of valid sidecars, there won't be a way to retrieve those edits.0
I have to mention that I have had edits disappear after reopening PR2020 after a non normal close of the program.
Also my catalogs have disappeared twice this way and I have reported this already 2 times.
Stevie from support told me that they are working on a easy backup-and install solution.
If this is going to solve the issue of disappearing edits, I am not sure.0
Yes, if the program crashes, it wouldn't have a chance to save the edits but that would affect only one sidecar, Tino hasn't said anything about crashing though, he said 'closed and re-opened'. Also that the sidecars are there, just that there is nothing in them. In any case, with the info provided, it's an unusual problem. If he wants to add more info about it, he can.0
Well that is my point. I made edits on117 files out 756 and then the program unexpectedly quit.
I would think that if you switch from 1 picture to the next, the sidecar is updated and edits are stored.
All 117 edits were gone without a trace. Strange behaviour.0
As described above, my sidecars were not gone. You have remained in the original folder. Only the changes were no longer displayed in On1.
I have now deleted all sidecars (were not many yet) and started editing again. I do not know if there really is a connection with importing styles.
Since this was the only action that was done before I noticed that I was no longer viewing the edit, I mentioned it.
Would be really helpful, if in On1 a proper backup and Restor strategy would be integrated!
Not just for the case described.0
I lost edits also in 2019 and now in 2020.
Still investigating what happens :-(
The sidecar .on1 file still exists but there is only exif info in there . no edit information
(checked with notepad)0
The only solution is to restore the .on1 sidecar files from a backup made before the edits disappeared. The problem is when did that happen and do you have a backup that old? I'm setting up a new Time Machine backup disk tomorrow specifically for this issue.
Everyone who experiences this problem should report it to support. There won't be much they can do about it but the more people that report it the more seriously it will be looked at.0
I have a secured my originals. But not the sidecar *.on1 files. Since the on1 structure is new to me and I was not aware that this need to be included in my backup.
For me it looks like On1 is not longer connecting the original file with the corresponding .on1 file. That must be an issue of a database entry. It was from one second to the other ... all gone from all images. I reported that issue to the support. its really a nightmare, loosing all work.
Hope they can fix the the "missing" link0
I've looked in some of the .on1 files after this has happened to me. (They're ASCII files.) What I found was the editing information had been removed. It's my opinion that the program saw the updated modified date after the edits were removed and so it updated the internal edits database to reflect the "new" sidecar info.
I actually saw the edits disappear from one of my files once. I was making changes to the metadata of all the images in a folder, some of which had been edited, some not. I made my changes to all the files at once and used the Embed Metadata command which I typically do. As the changes were being written to the files I saw the preview for one of the edited images loose its edits. Looking at the .on1 file for that image I could see the new metadata info but all the editing data was gone. Fortunately I had a backup and was able to recover them easily.0
Thanks Brian for your explanation. I can understand your issues. But i have only touched one image. No multiple selection. But the modifications on all images are lost. Normaly i can see in the browser the +\- tag that indicates the pictures is modified. These tags are also gone.0
I wasn't trying to say what I saw would be the same cause for everybody.
Those tags are gone from your images because all the editing information in the .on1 sidecar files has been removed somehow. The example I gave above is just one instance where this has happened to me. I have other files I've run across that have lost their edits and I have no explanation for why.
As I said above, you really need to report this to support. They won't be able to fix the problem but they need to know how widespread this is becoming.0
I report already and waiting for formation. It would be at least good to understand how to avoid this Problem, if i have done something wrong. Also how the identifications work. If it goes via the filename so a backup could have a clear structure.0
I don't believe you have done anything wrong or that there is anything we can do to avoid this. So far the one instance I described is the only one where I can attribute what happened to any actions I specifically took.
The identification is by filename. When you do your nightly backups all .xmp and .on1 files should be backup with the rest of your documents.0
I moved back to Version 2020.1 (220.127.116.1139)
All back to normal. All editing applied and the folder structure still same.
Puuuuh i am happy now. Since I really like to work with ON1.
I keep you updated.
Thanks for discussing that topic.. Tickets still open on zendesk.0
You're saying that reinstalling the previous version brought back the missing edits? If that is the case it is something support definitely needs to know about too.0
Yes, that's exactly what's happened. The internal database seems to be restored when you reinstall. I did not test to just reinstall the actual version. it could be possible that it does the same.... reinstalling the internal database. So my sidecar files have been all the time okay. just the linkage between the picture and the sidecar files failed.
I will of course assist the support as much as I can.0
I'm in contact with the engineers about this. They think it only affects external drives on Macs. Can anyone confirm or disprove that hypothesis? Any Windows users seeing this or anyone with their photos on an internal drive?0
Hi Brian, i was running on external SSD when this problem occurred. Since the reinstatement of the first 2020 if have not had this issues again, still running on external SSD (mac)0
Thanks Uwe, I gave them links to the threads here so they can catch up and ask any questions if need be.
Did you see the post on the other thread where they can be recovered by moving the image and sidecars to a new location while ON1 is shut down? It will relink things again when you restart the program.
Also, this problem is not new to this release. I've seen it before although now that I think about it I normally notice it right after an update. FWIW0
I can not confirm this solution by moving the file. I tried It with one pictures and the sidecar file, and not happened.
The only thing that works in my case was the reinstatement. If it happens again, i will try again. Also i will update again and see. Just afraid that my files can not be recovered. I like to try to share a picture with a sidecar files to see if somebody can read all0
I'll be glad to take a look at your files Uwe.
Did you quit ON1 before moving the files? The idea is to have the program see it as a new photo after restarting it.
The engineers have identified a bug and have a fix but they want to do more testing to see that nothing else breaks with the fix. They still want feedback from anyone experiencing this issue.0
I have the same problem too, see my post above. Working on Windows 10, internal drive (actually backup on external drive many times saved me tens of hours of work). For me it all started wit version 2019.5. It is better now but whenever I open one of the folders created in 2019.5, I again see disappearing edits on some of the pictures in the folder. And it seems to spread then also to newer folders where it was not present before re-opening the older affected folders.
Now the situation is better (one of the things that changed was of course newer On1 versions but I also changed Windows to US version from Czech one).
But also now, when I finish work on pictures in a folder and then I move the pictures (within On1 application - copy - paste) to another folder, some of the edits disappear.
And sometimes it does not help to copy .on1 file from backup, the edits still do not show again.
Really hard for me to say what is behind. I would say that once you experience this problem, the database is somehow corrupted and even if I make complete uninstall, registry cleaning and all the stuff which go far beyond the recommended uninstall utility provided by On1,the problem is still here.0
Petr, please be sure to pass this information along to support. They won't be happy to hear it's happening on internal drives on Windows machines but they definitely need to know about it so they can fix that side of things along with the Mac side.0
I have the exact same problem ,all my edits are gone .Some of the side cars are there ,and some have disappear .All my files are on an ssd drive.I am on a macbook pro.
I uninstalled and reinstalled ,nothing change.
I reported this last Friday ,still haven’t got an answer.
I did not uninstall on1. I just installed again on1 . Macbook Pro catalina, all edits are back. It’s stable since 3 days now. I agree with the corrupt database. The link between picture and Sidecar was gone.0
Just noticed something...I had only two catalogs ,2018 and 2019 and their subfolders.
The catalogs were gone ,but those are the only two years ,that the edit still shows.
I am on mac Catalina a10.15.40
Hi Brian, I reported the problem once again, like I did in the past, just added new files as examples.0
I am having the exact same problem. Using Mac external hard drive and I am losing edits despite the sidecars being there.
I have reported this to tech as well.0
