Raw 2020 - 527 edited files >5 hours to export?!

Are you saying you exported 527 images at the same time? When you divide 527 image by 330 minutes you get 1.6 minutes per image. That does not seem excessive to me.

When you do the math which I clearly didn't  (bashful), then 1.6 per image is not bad at all.

Admittedly I felt I couldn't continue with other image edits whilst this batch was exporting for fear of slowing it more down or getting the dreaded spinning wheel...

    Thanks Brian

Actually I inverted the rate (also bashful). It's 1.6 images per minute. Even faster. :)

Never mind the time, I'm impressed On1 didn't crash in the middle of all of that!

I suppose it's all down to perceptions and expectations.  I was disappointed with ON1 2019 taking 27 minutes to export 93 images (in excess of three per minute) while Affinity Photo could do the exact same job in four minutes.

John Botha Exporting is indeed slow. It takes ON1 RAW 2020 anywhere from 25-45secs to export from RAW to full-size JPG. Compare this to CaptureOne 2020, where the same image takes 3-5secs. I mean, that's an insane difference. Couple things I've noticed though:

    • In ON1 RAW, the amount of edits/filters applied matters. An undedited RAW file exports in 8-10secs. CaptureOne does not care about whether edits are applied, it's 3-5secs either way.
    • There are two export options: Export in the Background and Export Now. This is hidden under the Export button, you have to click and hold the button to get the popup selection. It's terrible UX really. Anyway, exporting in the background is set by default and is slower but allows you to work in ON1 RAW while it's exporting. Export Now puts up a modal that blocks you from working but the export is much faster. The 25-45secs drop to just 10secs. Frankly, when I'm exporting, I want to have the application finish as fast as possible. I don't need to work on other edits. So I would recommend using the Export Now setting.

The Export dialog in general is ill-conceived from a UI perspective:

    1. It's convoluted to cram this onto the right hand side of the screen while they could have made this centered onscreen with enough space to actually display these different export options.
    2. It's ridiculous that the export modal pops up every single time even though I don't want to change any setting, just export the same as the last image. No such nonsense in CaptureOne.
    3. Under "Photo Size", there is no option for original size, as in, I don't want to resize it at all. Yes, I could turn off the "Photo Size" module and that would export as original size. However, I therefore can't select an image type (which supposedly uses different algorithms) and I can't change the resolution (ppi). Having it turned off always exports at 72ppi.

In any case, I think there's still a lot to improve on the export side of things. Export Now should be a decent enough workaround for faster exports. If someone knows a way to get around that annoying export modal from popping up every! single! time!, please let me know.

To point number 2 — you can press the Return key to execute the export. Clicking the Export button to call up the Export pane then press the Return key if you don't want to change anything. I prefer the way it is because I usually export the same image more than once for different sites.

There is also the Quick Export command (Command/Control-Shift-S). This command only gives you the choice of file format to export to and where to save it.

Thanks for your detailed feedback Eric. Appreciate the time and effort.

i certainly will look at using Export Now.

I “tried” PS Camera Raw the other day......batched 151 Raw files to jpeg (after a “quick auto correct” and slight manual exposure adjustment) which took 14mins!

Actually what impressed me most, was at just how good PS Camera Raw “auto corrected” the  my Fuji raw images.

I’ve been with ON1 for years now but sad to say, I’m rethinking. Sorry ON1

Brian Lawson I think you misunderstood me there, I'm referring to the whole export modal popping out from the right as being unnecessary. If I click Export, I want it to export right away without having to go through the settings screen each time and then do another click or return. CaptureOne has "Recipes" or Presets where you can make your settings the way you need them. Once you click export, it will export based on whatever presets are selected. It will do multiple presets if they are selected, so you can export different sizes in one go, for multiple images.

Also the fact that I even have to click on the initial Export which is all the way in the corner of the screen. You lose 2-3secs just to move your mouse or pen there. CaptureOne provides a keyboard shortcut for export which takes a split-second to execute.

Although the Quick Export has a shortcut, it is also insufficient because it doesn't provide any control of what gets exported aside from the file-format and it also brings up another modal to select file directory and file format. The number of steps is the same as the regular export, albeit with less options. To me, that makes it essentially useless.

Not trying to advocate for CaptureOne here, it's got its own host of issues. I overall favor ON1 RAW, I'm just saying that its export is really poorly designed and there frankly isn't a justification for this. There are plenty of examples out there on how to do this right.

You can't have it both ways. First you say the Export dialog with all the options and settings is getting in your way and you don't want to see them then you say that the fast way does not give you all the options you don't want to change anyhow.

There is an Export… command in the File menu. You can use the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts to assign your own shortcut to it. I've done this for several commands I use frequently and want to access through the keyboard. Works like a charm. Once you've got your export settings the way you want them you can save them as a preset in the Export dialog. With a keyboard shortcut assigned all you'd have to do is press the shortcut key followed by a return and the export takes place just as you want. Worst case scenario is you'd have to select the preset because the last export performed used some different settings than what you normally use.

John Botha Hopefully that helps to get your export times down. I'm still apprehensive about the whole Adobe ecosystem, the new LR is still not in a state I would find sufficient for my needs.

As for Fuji raw, which I use too, CaptureOne and Luminar have the best rendering. However, Luminar is a dumpster fire and CaptureOne is overpriced and has a lot of other issues & shortcomings. ON1 RAW may not be the best in rendering but I appreciate that they included the Fuji camera profiles to select from. That's sometimes helpful to get a starting point that more closely resembles what the back of the camera displayed.

Brian Lawson Yes, you can have it both ways. As I said, check out how CaptureOne is handling this. In any case, I will give the System Prefs shortcut a try, that would get about as close to what I would need. Thanks!

    Thanks Eric and Brian
    Appreciate the input.
As far as ON1, I’m still a big fan

Hi there! I came across this thread while looking for ways to change keyboard shortcuts.

Unfortunately I can't find the here suggested "System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts"

All I find is "Preferences" under "Edit". And there is no keyboard settings to be found.

Can someone help me out here?

    Cheers, Jakob

    Ok, thank you.

Is there a way to change hotkeys for Photo Raw in Windows?

I'm sure there is. Try a Google search.

Windows will let you assign a hotkey to START Photo Raw, but it won't let you modify the keys that Photo Raw uses while running.

There may be an app somewhere that might do it, but it would have to know to activate itself when Photo raw starts and deactivate when it stops.

Not sure how that would work, if you wanted to change the grid (G) key to Q instead, the app would have to see the Q being pressed and send a G to the program instead because On1 will still be looking for that.
