Switching from lightroom
I want to move away from lightroom. I'm currently on LR6 because I don't want to get locked into their ransomware. I've been trying things out and have come up with a bunch of questions. Yes, they have some tutorials on migrating the files, but I can't find anything about if you're used to doing this in lightroom, here's how to do it in PR2020.
I'm used to doing a lot of my mass edits in grid view in lightroom. I select a bunch of images, make changes to one and see how it affects the others. I don't see how to do this in PR. There is a sync all, but I think that applies to every edit, not just changes like bump the exposure up a stop, no matter what the exposure already was.
I've been trying out PR2020 on my travel computer, as I'm out of town for the holidays. Also my LR catalog on it is about 2,000 images rather than 700,000 images. Things got messy and I wanted to start over with my migration, but that isn't really working.
I tried to get back to the state of a fresh installation, so I did an uninstall and reinstall of photo raw.
When I tried to migrate my lightroom (6) catalog, and photo raw came up, all of my keywords were still in photo raw, even though I hadn't migrated any photos.
I find that the syncing of edits with lightroom is very spotty. There are some photos where they seem to bring everything in, and others where it doesn't even make the same basic correction to base exposure. I often bracket +/- two stops so it's easy to tell which ones get the basic exposure. That's also why I want to be able to make mass adjustments of groups, I want to bring all of my +2 down two stops and my -2 up two stops.
Why does the default migration from lightroom not include things like importing keywords, settings or making the comparison jpegs?
Do all the migration tools work with lightroom 6? Or just lightroom CC?
Some of the photos seem to be getting the development data, some not.
It has also gone through and imported everything from my home directory. How do I tell it which directories I want it to look at and which ones I don't? I've got directories of stuff I've downloaded off the net which I have no need to edit, and don't want in my photo browser.
It seems to import the star rating and the pick/reject, and while it has the same color flags (red, yellow, green, blue) those don't seem to be imported.
I'm reading the user guide and it doesn't mention an option for only importing new photos off of an SD card from my camera. When I'm on a trip, I don't delete my files from the cards until I get home, just to have an extra level of backup.
I can see two possibilities, if there is already a sidecar file, photo raw could just skip that file. Or, it could copy the new file off of the memory card of the camera to the new location (rather than just skipping it if its there) and overwrite the sidecar file.
I'm looking to buy photo raw (assuming it will run on my desktop computer at home). I read someplace that there isn't a way to back up my edits, like backing up a lightroom catalog.
It's hard to believe that such an important basic feature was missed.
My home computer is a mac pro 4,1, which I'm going to reflash to 5,1 so that I can run High Sierra, I don't know if On1 will actually run on it.

I can't answer all of your questions but can tackle a few. You said you've seen tutorials, but I don't know which ones, so here are 4 that might help...
https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018410051-Lightroom-Migration-Tool-ON1-Photo-RAW
On1 only edits one photo at a time. You can copy those edits to other photos with sync but you can't interactively change them all at once.
As far as I know, migration will work with LR6
Importing new photos is not part of migration. Check page 48 for importing new photos but On1 doesn't need photos to be imported. You can just copy them from your card to a folder that On1 can see, that's all it needs. Use On1 import if you need to add keywords or presets at the same time.
If you don't delete photos from your card, then you'll need to select the newest ones to copy. This is the same whether you're using your PC's browser or on1 import.
Your edits are kept in the On1 database and backed up in sidecar files. When you back up your photos, back up the sidecars at the same time. I heard a rumour that On1 may include a backup option in future versions.
Someone here who uses Mac may be able to comment on High Sierra for you.

The Tech Specs page for Photo RAW 2020 says 10.14 or 10.15 so High Sierra is unsupported.

minimum is macOS 10.12, 10.13, 10.14, or 10.15, reccommended is 10.14 or 10.15. It does run OK on High Sierra on my MBP. The main question is whether the GPU will support it.

Thanks Rick, I had read all of those.
One of the things I do as part of my workflow, is to take a greycard shot and then set my white balance on a whole set of photos based upon that value. Lightroom makes it easy because you just select all of the photos you want to change, highlight the one with the greycard, press 'w', then click on the reference (greycard, or in my case usually a black lenscap) and that will set the color balance of all of the photos at once.
I searched the manual for setting white balance, but don't see a way of making use of a neutral color reference like this. Am I missing something?0 -
My bad, I jumped right to the Recommended specs and skipped over the Minimum requirements. Sorry.
In the Tone & Color panel next to the Color: title there is an eye dropper widget. Click that then click on any neutral gray color to set the white balance.

Thanks Brian.
That seems to work. Honest, I did search for setting white balance in the user manual and couldn't find this.
Going back, knowing what to look for, the search term is "grey dropper".
Now I need to figure out how to take this setting, and only this setting and apply it to a bunch of other photos.
I did call up on of my greycard shots to try it out on, and got this weird thing. I've seen it before. Does anyone know what causes it, or how to fix it?0 -
I've never seen anything like that. Off the top of my head I'd guess it has to do with the video card. Which Mac are you running? Can you post the image file and the .on1 sidecar somewhere for me to download so I can see if it happens on my 2017 MacBook Pro?

OK, they are at

2014 Macbook pro retina 15"
And as I was looking at the photo, that went away.0 -
That model MacBook came in two versions, one with an Nvidia GeForce GT 750M video card and the other without. Do you know if yours has the Nvidia card or just the built in Intel Iris Pro 5200? Without the Nvidia card the graphics processing would be slower. It seems as though that might be the case here. Or, it was just some kind of glitch that cleared as you watched.
When I opened your image on my system which has a Radeon card to go with the built in Intel graphics processor it came right up without any rendering artifacts.

Brian about this mac reports:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
It seems to just be an intermittent glitch that happens with Photo Raw0 -
I'm trying a couple of quick tests, but does anyone have experience on how HDR and Panorama compare with Lightroom? I found a couple of cases where Photo Raw punted. One was an HDR that it wouldn't do, another was a Panorama that I just gave up and canceled because it had taken half an hour in composing panorama and hadn't finished.
Unfortunately, cancel doesn't seem to work either, it's still sitting there with the Progress box and blocked out from doing anything else.0 -
You might try adjusting the Performance setting for the program's graphics card usage in Preferences > System. Don't know if it will help but it might.
At least it is a temporary thing.

For the most part I have good luck with them. Occasionally I run across something that ON1 won't handle and I take those images to Autopano Pro or Photomatix. Recently I've started manually blending my HDR shots with masks and different blending modes.
One thing I've found with the panorama stitching is to ensure the images are sent so in the browser they are viewed left-to-right; i.e., the left side shot is displayed on the left in the browser. I've had problems getting it to work when the images were shot from right-to-left. If you shot the sequence from right-to-left you can use the Descending option in the Sort pop-up at the bottom of the window to get them in the correct order.
Yes, the Cancel button doesn't always work. Those processes are most likely not being processed on their own thread so the program can't process the button click until it has finished whatever it is currently doing.

I took some bracketed photos of a “new year’s tree”, I figured the dynamic range from glowing lights to ornaments in an otherwise dim room would give HDR a reasonable work out.
Here are the hdrs processed in Lightroom 6Here they are processed in On1I think that On1 has a slight edge.0 -
I tried a quick test comparing them for panoramas, and Photo Raw completely failed.
OK, On1 Photo Raw totally failed the panorama test. Lightroom isn’t perfect, but it did a much better job on a simple mergeLightroom is left with the raggedy edges, Photo Raw massively screwed up on the trailer.0 -
I have also not had much success with On1's panorama tool. Since I too am moving away from LR, I tested some alternatives. I found that Panorama Stitcher Mini does the best job. And it's free.

"I want to move away from lightroom. I'm currently on LR6 because I don't want to get locked into their ransomware."
I own a copy of Lightroom 6 and it belongs to me forever. And I feel no need to upgrade to a more recent version. And will continue to use it until what needs to be fix in ON1 2020 is fixed. At present time, I use both LR6 and ON1 2020.

@Larry: I'm used to doing a lot of my mass edits in grid view in lightroom. I select a bunch of images, make changes to one and see how it affects the others. I don't see how to do this in PR.
Yes, this should be a must-have feature and I am really missing it.
@Rick: On1 only edits one photo at a time. You can copy those edits to other photos with sync but you can't interactively change them all at once.
But the sync dialog is cumbersome and takes a lot of time. Compare to LR! They have done that pretty easy. If you move one special slider, this single change is applied to all other selected images. How quick and easy life can be!

Holger, I'm not saying On1 can do what Lightroom does, just saying what options are available. I can't change them, I can only tell you what you have to work with.
