Unable to import photos from iPhone
Hi,
I've got an iPhone XR with the latest OS (iOS 13.3) and I'm using On1 Photo RAW 2020 on a 2015 Macbook Pro running Catalina (10.15.2). I've been trying to get photos shot on my phone to import onto my HD using the On1 File > Import... function and selecting iPhone as the source. The phone is connected to the laptop via a USB cable - the same one I use when accessing the phone through Music (formerly iTunes) or Photos (formerly iPhotos).
When I attempt to access the photos on the phone (and there are many), I get a dialog box from On1 that says "No photos or videos were found on the camera or phone. Please make sure the device fully powered and unlocked."
The phone has a full charge on it's battery, the laptop is fully charged and plugged in to power, the phone is unlocked. I get nothing. I can launch Photos and see everything, but the only option there is to export the photos from the phone to a HD folder - which I've done. I can get to the exported photos, but this is really not the workflow I'm looking for. I'd like to be able to connect my phone and import files to the HD using On1.
Any clues what I might be doing wrong or may need to do differently?

What is the file format for those photos? Are they supported in On1?
If you can save one as JPG on the phone and On1 can see that, then the format might be the problem.

Try this, it has helped other users solve their importing from iPhone problems.

Thanks Brian,
I checked and sure enough my iPhone Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC was set to Automatic. I switched it to Keep Originals, but the exact same thing happens. I still get the dialog that says "No photos or videos were found on the camera or phone. Please make sure the device fully powered and unlocked."
It seems to be able to tell there's an iPhone connected, as it gives me that option for source, and the phone is unlocked, but no luck. I even tried exiting from On1 and restarting the app - still no luck.
Richard,
To the best of my knowledge the photos are all JPG format. That what I got when I used to import with LR. That's what I get when I export from the OSX Photos app, and that's what I get when I email them from my phone.

I'm going to have to refer you to tech support. I'm still running Mojave and I'm not having any problems importing from my iPhone 6s. I don't know if anything has changed with the XR or with Catalina and I do not have any way to do any testing, sorry.
Use the Submit a request link at the bottom of this page after reading the article How to submit a problem to ON1 Tech Support. Be sure to include the requested files for them.

I got the same message ( I am using windows) When I connect my iPhone I get a request to allow transfer on the iPhone, I click Allow. When I get the message on the computer of No Photos I click ok and then in the upper left I select the Source of iPhone and the camera roll shows up. Select which photos you want and destination. Works pretty good. I also use the Photos app on Windows and put them in a folder and then On1 sees them also.

Brand new user of ON1 2020 and trying to learn the basics. Same exact problem here with iPhone (iPhone 6s). iPhone settings suggestion didn't fix it. Anything new discovered on this issue?

I'm happy to hear that it's working for you you Michael - maybe it's a Windows vs. OSX thing? Unfortunately it's definitely not working for me. I did create a tech support request using the link Brian provided, but no response yet.

I think the problem is that On1 doesn't read the HEIC format of the photos on your IPhone. This is a real deficiency, if true, because more and people use their phones. I was told by Tech to download IPhone images to my hard drive using Image Capture and import them from the drive. Seems like an unnecessary step, especially since this isn't a problem with the Adobe products. Every so often I can see the Camera Roll on my phone, but most of the time get the No Photos message. I think if you allow IPhone to back up your photos to ICloud, On1 can't see them on your phone.

I use an iPhone 11 pro max and an iPhone 6s. I use several different camera apps that all store the photos in my camera roll on the phones. I connect phone vie usb cable to desktop. When I open import dialog it show a box that says No photos available, I click ok and then in the upper left of box click on Source and click on iPhone. It will show the photos on the camera roll. It will show the photos that are on iPhone. It will show jpg and heic formats. It shows blank photos with a dng designation (but it will iport the dng photos. I then select whatever folder, naming, etc. Works really nice. I am on a Windows 10 computer.

Thanks, Michael. I truly appreciate your help. Unfortunately, it doesn't work....I see the Iphone as a choice, but regardless of the # of times I click it, I get the message that "there are no photos on the phone. Please be sure the phone is unlocked (it is) and powered (it is)." In Settings, I've clicked on Keep Originals. I've even disconnected ICloud from Photos. I could download easily from the phone about two On1 versions ago. I've even connected the IPhone to my computer before opening On1, and visa versa, in case there was an issue with seeing either the device or software. At first I thought I was the only one with a problem, but there are lots of us out there frustrated by this. Time for On1 to lean in on this!

Myrna, I have problems import my photos too. It has nothing to do with Apple's heic format. The program does work with those images just fine once you get them onto your computer. Did you check the iPhones Settings > Photos to have the option turned on to Keep Originals per the instructions above?
With my camera it will only import so many images. If I have more than about 30 or so it will not import all of them and it is random about which it will import and which it will not or how many it imports. I don't use my phone camera the same way, I rarely have that many photos to import from it so it usually works OK.
I've given up using the program's Import function. It's unfortunate that I've had to do that as I like its convenience features like importing to a backup destination and being able to apply metadata like keywords and locations during import. I use Image Capture to import them now.
Before my card reader died I had no problems importing images from my camera's SD cards. It is only while the card is in the camera that I have the problems I've described.
At this point all we can do is continue to report the problem to support. Eventually when they've receive enough complaints from enough users they'll focus more attention to finding and fixing the cause of the problem.

Thank you Brian for your thoughts.
Yes, I have Keep Originals checked and I slide the SD card into the IMac, so I'm not going through a cable connected to my camera. You're right On1 can open HEIC format (once they are on your desktop) , but I wonder if the code for Importing has an error that blocks that format from importing.I enjoy working with On1, certainly more than LR and its Adobe cousins. But these unsolved issues, with cumbersome work arounds, aren't what we want, or deserve, from the developers. And if they can't get this right, why would they offer an upgrade that allows you to go between mobile and desktop? Wouldn't that be more complicated and more likely to have issues?0 -
You have an SD card for your iPhone? ;)
I have imported HEIC files from my phone so that isn't the issue.
The new Mobile app allows you to edit the images on the phone and sync those images and edits through the 360º cloud service. Importing won't play a part in this scenario.
I agree, I wish the company would get problems like this solved. However, if they can not replicate the problem on their systems it is very tough to figure out why it isn't working on someone else's system. The work around isn't that onerous so I don't worry about it. I just report the problems, use the workaround, and move on.

Windows 10 pro ... I use iCloud app to download my iPhone 11 pro images

I get this "there are no photos on the phone" notification also often, it seems to help to open Image Capture, when the pictures appear there they appear in the On1 import as well. But this might be a coincidence.
But when they do appear in the import window of On1, it is still a useless function, because all the pictures are in a seemingly random order... So it's impossible to select a bunch of pictures at once.
Does anyone know if you can order them, preferably on date?
(iPhone 8 iOS 14, iMac 10.12)

No, unfortunately there isn't any way to reorder the images.

It seems tone-deaf that On1 would not address this issue. More and more people use IPhones and it appears that a substantial number of On1 users can't directly import from their phones. Could it be that if a link to ICloud is open via the IPhone, On1 doesn't see photos to import? Is this part of the firewall to prevent access to ICloud by non-Apple software?
I've tried all the suggestions (choosing Original photos, etc.) And I prefer not to edit on the tiny phone screen when I had a 27" monitor--so 360 is not the answer. And if photo are in Live Mode, I'd like to be able to choose the best of the group-which isn't possible in On1.
I don't want to use Image Capture (not sure if all the metadata and the resolution) is captured. I prefer not to download to Photos and then move the images to desktop in order for them to be seen by On1. We want a streamlined import process so that we can spend our (limited) time in making the images meet our vision.

Image Capture has no affect on the image's quality or its metadata; both will be retained by if you use it to do the transfer.

Image capture crashes if I want to import al lot of pictures at once. I tried some other app's to import pictures from my iPhone , but nothing works good for me so far...
So a real solution by On1 would be great

Airdrop works for a view pictures, but I want to import a view hundred. In that case selecting and deleting goes much quicker and easier with a desktop app.

If Image Capture is crashing when you try to import you have other problems with your system that have nothing to do with ON1. Those need to be resolved before you can get ON1 to work.
Having said that, I too have problems if I try to import directly from my Canon camera or iPhone as I've described above. To get photos from my camera I use an SD card reader and I've never had problems doing it that way. I use Image Capture to get photos from my iPhone and iPad and there too I do not have any problems.

That's (Richard B.) what I experienced indeed, except from the correct sequence in the import window

I'm having the same issues. Yesterday I was able to import images from my iphone 6+, now On1 says no images found, yet it appears to recognize the iphone. I see mentions of using Image Capture. Can someone tell me where that is in On1 2021? I can't find that at all. I'm running On1 on Windows 10, current release.

Image Capture is in the Applications folder. It comes with your Mac and is not a part of the ON1 software.

That answers why I could not find it, since I'm using Windows 10 in this instance. Thanks for the info though.
Meanwhile, I seem to have fixed the issue(s).
It appears that the iphone needs to authorize the transfer again. When connecting to the iphone again, there was no prompt sent to the iphone to authorize again. To force the transfer I had to go into iphone Settings > Photos and turn on "My Photo Stream". After a successful transfer, I have the option to turn off My Photo Stream. btw- turning on My Photo Stream did not also upload my images to iCloud, which is what I prefer.
